Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which country is "Walkabout" set?

Answer: Australia

"Walkabout" was filmed on location in Australia; the city scenes were shot in Sydney, but the majority of the movie was filmed in the outback of South Australia and Northern Territory.
2. The main star of the film was Jenny Agutter - what was the name of her character?

Answer: Girl

None of the characters in the film had first or second names, they were merely referred to in the credits by titles such as "girl", "white boy" and "black boy".
3. The film begins with a father driving his son and daughter in to the outback for a picnic. What happens to their father that leads to the children being stranded there?

Answer: He commits suicide

The father (John Meillon) suddenly starts shooting at his son and daughter. They manage to hide, but the father then sets fire to their car before shooting himself.
4. Does the girl's young brother (Luc Roeg) witness what happens to their father?

Answer: No

Although the girl sees the burning wreck, she shields the eyes of her much younger brother so that he cannot see what has happened. She gathers their few remaining possessions, including a transistor radio, and the pair head out into the wilderness.
5. Wandering about in the desert, the youngsters soon run out of water, but are saved by an Aboriginal boy on walkabout. How does he help them?

Answer: He shows them how to draw water from a dried oasis

The youngsters had found an oasis to drink from but it had mysteriously dried up overnight. The Aborigine boy (David Gulplil) shows them how to use a hollow reed to draw water from the mud.
6. What type of animal does the Aborigine teach the young boy to hunt?

Answer: Water buffalo

The Aborigine hunts using traditional weapons, but this scene is interspersed with one of white hunters shooting large numbers of buffalo and leaving their carcasses to rot. (The missing children don't actually meet these hunters.)
7. The children narrowly miss an encounter with a white couple who live in the outback. This couple employ Aborigines to do what?

Answer: Make plaster figurines

The man is seen berating the Aborigine workers who are making cheap plaster figurines of kangaroos. His wife sees the children, but they don't see her, and they continue walking through the outback.
8. The Aborigine boy develops a sexual attraction to the girl but she does not reciprocrate his feelings. How does he react to this?

Answer: He hangs himself

The girl's brother finds the Aborigine boy hanging in a crucifix-like position in a tree.
9. Do the girl and her brother eventually find their way back to civilisation?

Answer: Yes

They eventually arrive at a tarmaced highway, and, although they aren't shown accepting a lift, it can be assumed that they got back to the city safe and well as the film cuts to a few years later. The girl, now grown up and married, is seen looking bored as her husband talks to her, and dreams of herself all those years before swimming in a pool in the outback with her brother and the Aborigine boy.
10. Who wrote the book on which the film "Walkabout" was based?

Answer: James Vance Marshall

James Vance Marshall is a pseudonym used by British author Donald Payne. "Walkabout" was originally published in 1959, under the title "The Children". Payne also used the pseudonym Ian Cameron to write "The Lost Ones", which was adapted by Walt Disney for the 1974 film "The Island at the Top of the World".
