1. The first shirt in my collection is very well-worn. It was my first band tee, from my very first concert. I'll never forget when I saw Nick, A.J., Brian, Kevin and Howie for the first time; it was March 27, 1997. What band was my first?

Answer: Backstreet Boys

The Backstreet Boys, formed in Orlando, Florida, were one of the two major boy bands of the '90s, along with N Sync. Their peak year was around 1999-2000, with the "Millennium" CD. They attempted a comeback in 2005, but nothing much came of it.

In case anyone cares, I also saw the Backstreet Boys on January 2, 1998, November 12, 1999, September 15, 2001, and September 14, 2005. Yeah, I'm not very cool.

2. Here's a t-shirt that's not quite as old. It bears the name of a band I saw on October 7, 2004, but how I wish I could have seen them circa 1984 instead. I would have loved to see Cliff Burton, or even Jason Newsted, but I had to make do with seeing Robert Trujillo play bass for this band.

Answer: Metallica

Metallica was formed in California in 1981, with the original lineup of James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. A couple years later, Mustaine was replaced by Kirk Hammett, and McGovney by Cliff Burton. Burton was killed during a tour bus accident in Sweden in 1986.

He was replaced by Jason Newsted, who remained with the band until he quit in 2001. After a couple of rebuilding years (including an extended stint in rehab for James Hetfield), Metallica finally found a new bassist, Robert Trujillo. Trujillo had previously played for Black Label Society and Ozzy Osbourne's backing band.

3. Ah, a band that I liked enough to buy two t-shirts from! The first, bought on February 3, 2003 was designed by a fan - it's a caricature of band members Raine, Jeremy, Steve and Duncan. My second tee featuring this band is just a plain old tour t-shirt, with "Healthy in Paranoid Times" written on the front, and the tour dates on the back, including the May 16, 2006 date in Ottawa. Who did I see twice?

Answer: Our Lady Peace

Our Lady Peace was formed in Toronto, Ontario in the early '90s by friends Raine Maida and Mike Turner. Turner left the band in 2001, and was replaced on lead guitar by Steve Mazur. The 2003 OLP tour was called "Fear of the Trailer Park" and featured the Trailer Park Boys (Ricky, Julian and Bubbles) as an opening act.

4. Ah, my "I [Heart] The Ladies!" t-shirt! It was purchased at a very good show on February 24, 2004. I'm sure this Canadian band has made a "million dollars" by now; they gave the crowd a really fun time!

Answer: Barenaked Ladies

The Barenaked Ladies formed in 1988 in Scarborough, Ontario, just outside of Toronto. They put on very informal concerts, with a lot of banter and ad-libbing, as well as quite a bit of audience interaction. Their most well-known song is "If I Had $1,000,000".

The song is almost as old as the band is; it was first released on their three early demo tapes "Buck Naked", "Barenaked Lunch", and "The Yellow Tape", then on 1991's "Variety Recordings" EP. It was officially recorded for the album "Gordon"(1993), and a live version of it is on "Rock Spectacle"(1996).

The lyric "We wouldn't have to eat Kraft Dinner" started a trend of fans throwing boxes of Kraft Dinner (Kraft Macaroni and Cheese) on stage, to the chagrin of the band and their equipment, who were frequently hit quite hard with the boxes.

5. I have to say for this show I was originally more excited for opening band The Mars Volta, but the main act ended up being pretty darn good too! They didn't get naked or anything, though. My tee from this show is a pretty boring one; it is just black, with "Stadium Arcadium" printed on the front; who did I see that night, November 24, 2006?

Answer: Red Hot Chili Peppers

Anthony Kiedis and Flea started the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1983 in Los Angeles, and by 1989, John Frusciante and Chad Smith had joined, creating the lineup that still exists. "Stadium Arcadium" was the double-album the band released in 2006, and the name of the tour supporting the album. It won the 2007 Grammy for Best Rock Album, and was also nominated for Album of the Year (but lost to the Dixie Chicks).

The Mars Volta is a prog-rock that formed in 2001. It was started by former members of the band At the Drive-in Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez.

6. Wow, what a fun night I had when I got this t-shirt. It was November 27, 2005 and it was the roughest mosh pit I've ever been in (but really, wasn't too rough; I'm just a wimp). Lead singer Gerard Way strutted around the stage wearing a bulletproof vest for most of the night. The shirt I got has a lyric printed on the back: "from the razor to the rosary". Who did I see that night?

Answer: My Chemical Romance

My Chemical Romance, formed in 2001, are from New Jersey. The band is made up of brothers Gerard and Mikey Way, Frank Iero, Ray Toro and Bob Bryar. When I saw them, they had only released the 2002 album "I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love" and the breakthrough 2004 album "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge". 2006's "The Black Parade" came later.

The line "from the razor to the rosary" comes from the song "It's Not a Fashion Statement, It's a Deathwish".

7. My tee from this show is bright blue, which I find just a tad ironic. That night, the band pleased the crowd by playing hit songs "Hey There Delilah" and "Our Time Now". I saw them open for Fall Out Boy on November 16, 2007; who are they?

Answer: Plain White T's

Plain White T's was formed by front man Tom Higgenson in Chicago, Illinois in the late 1990s. They were signed by Fearless Records in 2001 and released two albums, "Stop"(2002) and "All That We Needed"(2005). "All That We Needed" was the first album to have the hit song "Hey There Delilah" on it, but PWT were unable to break into the mainstream at this time.

They were dropped by Fearless, and signed to Hollywood Records. "Hey There Delilah" was re-released as an EP, and then included again on the 2006 CD "Every Second Counts".

This time the band had much more mainstream success, not only with "Hey There Delilah", but other singles such as "Our Time Now" and "Hate (I Really Don't Like You)".

8. Okay, so I didn't actually get to go to this concert, but my dad did and he very thoughtfully bought me a t-shirt. Tickets were very hard to get for that night; these legends of rock hadn't played here since 1965, before the show on August 28, 2005. The shirt I have has the traditional tongue logo on a moose's leg, as well as the words "A Bigger Bang" on the back. Who did I miss seeing that night?

Answer: Rolling Stones

"A Bigger Bang"(2005) was the Rolling Stones' 22nd full-length studio album. It was their first new release since 1997's "Bridges to Babylon". The tour supporting the album brought the Stones to Ottawa's Lansdowne Park, to play in front 43,000 fans. They had last played to a few dozen people at the downtown YMCA in 1965.

The spring and summer of 2005 had the Stones travelling all over Canada - to many small towns, especially out in the Maritimes, and in between Toronto and Vancouver, areas that most bands ignore.

9. I saw this band perform at the Ottawa Bluesfest on July 7, 2003. I don't know why, they definitely aren't a blues band; but then again, neither are most acts at the annual Bluesfest. It was a good time, anyways; back then I quite liked Deryck Whibley (before he married Avril Lavigne!). The tee that I bought that night has a skull, with the words "Pain for Pleasure" written under it; what band's name is written across the top?

Answer: Sum 41

Deryck Whibley and company started out playing for different bands while they were in high school in Ajax, Ontario. They met in 1996 and formed a NOFX cover band, and then were discovered at one of their shows by Grieg Nori of Treble Charger. Whibley married Avril Lavigne in 2006. "Pain for Pleasure" is a song from the 2001 CD "All Killer, No Filler".

10. I think this was my favourite concert of all, so it's only fitting that it's my favourite tee as well. It's black, the front has a picture of a heart-shaped grenade, and the back lists all the "American Idiot" tour dates. Which band played Ottawa on September 5, 2005?

Answer: Green Day

Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool have been collectively known as Green Day since the late '80s. They released several albums in the '90s, but hadn't come out with any new material for awhile when the 2004 rock opera "American Idiot" was released.

They had two large North American tours to support that album; the first one in late 2004 skipped over Ottawa, but they made it here on the second leg in 2005. The "American Idiot" heart-shaped grenade logo comes from a song on the album, "She's A Rebel", which contains the lyric: "She's holding on my heart like a hand grenade".
