Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start off with an easy one: "I look at the floor and I see it needs sweeping" Who played the guitar solo on this song?

Answer: Eric Clapton

The song is of course 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', which George Harrison wrote for the 'white album' in 1968. George brought his friend Clapton into the recording not becuase he felt insecure in his own playing, but because the band was having internal problems at the time, and George felt bringing someone from outside the group into the session would lighten the mood.

It worked, apparently, because he did the same thing with Billy Preston in the 'Let It Be' sessions.
2. "if you're lonely you can talk to me" Which film was this song featured in?

Answer: Yellow Submarine

The Beatles were uniterested and unimpressed by the idea of an animated feature based on their characters. They refused to record their voices for the film, but producer George Martin who headed the project convinced them to record a couple of new songs for it. One of them was the quick and minimalistic 'Hey Bulldog', which John wrote and sang lead vocals on.
3. "it's beautiful and so are you" Who recorded a cover version of this song in 1984?

Answer: Siouxie & the Banshees

The song is 'Dear Prudence', which was written by John for the 'white album'; Prudence is Mia Farrow's sister, who was in Rashikesh at the same time as the Beatles. The Banshees' interpertation of the song was released on their 1984 album 'Hyaena', and was their most successful single.
4. "long ago she knew someone" Which outside instrument(s) was brought in for the recording of this song?

Answer: French horn

The classic french horn solo on 'For No One' was recorded by Alan Civil. The song was written by Paul McCartney in 1966 and was included in the 'Revolver' album.
5. "when I think of love as something new" Who played the piano solo on this song?

Answer: George Martin

The song is John's 'In My Life' from the 1965 'Rubber Soul' album. John asked Martin to do a 12-bar segment and to 'play it like Bach'; what came out is this classic, beautiful solo. George Martin had problems playing this fast, so he recorded it at half speed and then sped it up.
6. "escaping from this zoo" This song was the b-side of which no. 1 single?

Answer: The Ballad Of John And Yoko

Yeah, well, guess that was a tricky one. The song is 'Old Brown Shoe', which is a rather obscure song written by George in 1969.
7. "You can learn how to play the game" Which of these mega-stars sang backing vocals on this song?

Answer: Mick Jagger

Mick Jagger can be clearly seen among the choir singing in the video; Eric Clapton can also be seen in the crowd. The song is of course 'All You Need Is Love', which was performed live on world-wide television in 1967.
8. "show me that I'm everywhere" This is the first Beatles song to use feedback.

Answer: False

The song is George Harrison's 'It's All Too Much', and it uses feedback in the beginning; that song, though, is from 1968, by which time artists like Jimi Hendrix and the Velvet Underground were using the effect freely. The Beatles actually did it much earlier, in the 1964 single 'I Feel Fine'.
9. "hey little little gonna play my fiddle" Who originally recorded this rock n' roll classic?

Answer: Chuck Berry

The song is Chuck Berry's 'Roll Over Beethoven'. It was recorded on the Beatles' second LP - 'With The Beatles' - and had George singing lead vocals.
10. "it happens all the time" A cover version of this song was later used as the theme song to which TV series?

Answer: Wonder Years

The song is 'With A Little Help From My Friends', originally recorded for the Sgt. Pepper album with Ringo Starr on lead vocals. The version used for 'Wonder Years' was recorded by Joe Cocker. The song was also a moderate hit for Wet Wet Wet some years later.
11. "slip into the shade" Which technique did this song pioneer?

Answer: Backward recording

The song is 'Rain', which is probably the first song ever to use a recording of a guitar played backwards. The Beatles repeated this effect several months later in 'I'm Only Sleeping'.
12. "I said something wrong" This song was not initially released as a single in the UK.

Answer: True

The song is 'Yesterday', which is one of the Beatles' greatest hits and yet was never released in the UK as a single during the Beatles' lifetime. It did get released in a single in the US, with 'Act Naturally' on the flipside, and in the UK it was released one year later as part of an EP. It was finally released as a single in the UK in 1976 and made it to no. 8 in the charts.
13. "if looks could kill it would have been us" Only the four core members of the band can be heard in this song.

Answer: False

The song is 'The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill' from the 'White Album', and Yoko Ono sings some of it. Yoko was present in almost every rehearsal and recording during that period of 1968-9, which was one of the elements that brought on the band's break-up.
14. "you know darling I love only you" Who wrote this song?

Answer: Ringo Starr

The song is 'Don't Pass Me By', from the 'White Album', which is Ringo's first composition on a Beatles album. He did get a co-writer's credit with John and Paul on the 1965 song 'What Goes On'.
15. "from above you sent us love" Which album did this song appear on?

Answer: Beatles For Sale

The song is 'Mr. Moonlight'. It was sang by John on the Beatles' 4th album, 'Beatles For Sale'.
16. "taking good care of you" This song was written in the final years of the Beatles' career, but was only released later as part of the solo debut of one of the members. Which Beatle wrote and recorded this song?

Answer: Paul

The song is Paul's 'Teddy Boy', which was released in his minimalistic, low-budget 1970 debut, 'McCartney' - in which Paul and his wife Linda played all the instruments. A rare recording of this song by the Beatles (from 1969) can be found in the third volume of 'Anthology'.
17. "find better things to do" Which movie was this song featured in?

Answer: None

The song is 'I'll Be Back', which was indeed part of the album 'A Hard Day's Night', but was not actually used in the movie.
18. "I'll let you know when she's come home" Who wrote this song?

Answer: George Harrison

The song is 'Don't Bother Me', and it was George's first own composition - though he did sing lead vocals before, on 'Do You Want To Know A Secret'.
19. Was a sitar used in the song 'Girl'?

Answer: No

The sitar was used on several Beatles songs including 'Norwegian Wood' and 'Across the Universe'.
20. "when I get to the bottom I go back to the top" Which historical figure was greatly influenced by this song?

Answer: Charles Manson

The charismatic cult leader and mass murderer Charles Manson claimed to have found a hidden message in the song 'Helter Skelter' which influenced him in his hideous actions. A bit of a rough one for Paul there.
