quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1987 brought us this double album from Prince, which is part of his post-Revolution recordings and comes in at number 155.

Answer: Sign 'O' the Times

Songs which can be found on this album are "U Got the Look", "Strange Relationship" and "Hot Thing".

The track "U Got the Look" includes vocals from the sexy and successful Sheena Easton. But she is outdone by the equally sexy Sheila E. playing a mean set of drums on the track, before she became successful on her own.
2. The album "Big Willie Style" comes in at number 154 and is by this multi talented artist.

Answer: Will Smith

"Men in Black", "Big Willie Style" and "Getting Jiggy Wit it" are some songs from the album.

Will Smith's rapping career goes back to what is now considered "Old School". He and DJ Jazzy Jeff, who also had a recurring role in the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" television show that starred Will, first made their mark with the comedic "Parent's Just Don't Understand". The actions taking place during the theme song of "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" are taken partially from the video for "Parent's Just Don't Understand".
3. The title of this Ozzy Osbourne album at number 153 on the list, is a take on a movie based on a Frank L. Baum book.

Answer: Blizzard of Ozz

Hit songs from the album include "Crazy Train", "I Don't Know", "Mr. Crowley" and "Goodbye to Romance".

Adam Wakeman, son of Yes band member Rick Wakeman, became the keyboardist for Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath in 2004. Yes is another band I thought should have had an album on the list.

Another guitarist who left this world too early, Randy Rhodes, was the lead guitarist on this album.
4. In 1975 Queen released this album which contains a song made more famous by the movie "Wayne's World"

Answer: A Night at the Opera

Among the songs on this album are "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Your My Best Friend" and "The Prophet's Song".

It is unfortunate that a band like Queen only has this album, in the last quarter, on this list. With such complex and moving songs that reach beyond the genre of Rock N' Roll, many different genres could be incorporated on one album. When recorded, "A Night at the Opera" was the most expensive album produced. "A Day at the Races" was released following "A Night at the Opera"; both albums share their name with Marx Brothers movies. "News of the World" was released next and contains two songs every sports fan knows "We Will Rock You" and "We are the Champions".
5. Don't call her Michael's little sister; Janet Jackson has made her own name for herself in the music world, and in time may be best remembered for a Superbowl wardrobe malfunction. Which album of hers released in 1993 comes in at number 151 and has twenty-seven tracks listed on it?

Answer: Janet

"Again", "Because of Love", and "What I'll Do" are part of this album.

There are twenty-seven tracks listed on this album, the opening track is thirty-one seconds long, twelve other tracks are less then eighteen seconds and one track is one minute and thirty-six seconds long. Each of the short tracks is in between one of the main tracks on the album, except for tracks ten and eleven which are both longer then four minutes.
6. This Jazz musician and his quartet have "Time Out" on the list at number 150.

Answer: Dave Brubeck

"Strange Meadow Lark", "Three To Get Ready" and "Take Five".

Recorded in 1959, this is one of the oldest records on the list. Brubeck often worked with alto saxophonist Paul Desmond and led the Dave Brubeck Quartet. He did the music for "This is America Charlie Brown", and was the second Jazz musician, following Louis Armstrong, to be featured on the cover of "Time" magazine. In the mid 1950s Eugene Wright, an African-American, replaced an original member of the quartet. Shows and television appearances were cancelled by Brubeck because they asked him to use a different bassist at the shows and he was told Wright would not be put on camera for a television appearance.
7. Smashing Pumpkins come in at number 149 with this double CD which can be broken down into six parts.

Answer: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

"1979", "Bullet With Butterfly Wings", "Tonight Tonight" and "Zero" make up some of the songs on this album.

This was released in the era of compact discs and is a double CD with the first part entitled "Dawn to Dusk" and the second "Twilight to Starlight". This album was also released on vinyl in a six parts which are "Dawn", "Tea Time", "Dusk", "Twilight", "Midnight" and "Starlight".
8. This artist/band with a name referencing a house pet gives us "Tea for the Tillerman" at number 148.

Answer: Cat Stevens

You can find "Wild World", "Father and Son" and "Miles From Nowhere" on this album.

Now known as Yusuf Salam, and born Steven Demetre Georgiou, he converted to Islam in 1977. A year later he sold all his instruments and awards for charity and worked as a philanthropist and educator in the Muslim community. In 2006 he released his first album in 28 years called "An Other Cup".
A Tillerman is someone who steers something, usually a boat's tiller, which controls the rudder and is derived from the handle used to work a plough in a field.
9. This artist comes in with a self titled album that was released in 1956. The song "Tutti Frutti" is on this album, but the artist isn't the one most known for singing the song.

Answer: Elvis Presley

On this album you can find the Carl Perkins classic "Blue Suede Shoes", "I Got a Woman" co-written by Ray Charles with Renald Richard and "Tutti Frutti" which was first more famously sung by "Little" Richard Penniman in 1955 and was written by him and Dorothy LaBostrie.

This was his first album and was released in 1956. LaBostrie's part in writing the song "Tutti Frutti" had been to "clean up" the original lyrics, which the music industry and general public were not ready for. Even after being revised, the song and lyrics still featured an African-American style which was not previously part of popular music.
10. Jamesetta Hawkins is the birth name of Etta James who is at number 146 with this album from 1961.

Answer: At Last

The timeless classic "At Last", as well as "A Sunday Kind of Love", "Spoonful" and "Stormy Weather" are all from this album.

Etta was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 1993, Blues Hall of Fame in 2001 and Grammy Hall of Fame in both 1999 and 2008. The song "At Last" can be considered immortal with all the movies and commercials that use this timeless song. As well, greats from all ages have covered the song including Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Celine Dion, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Norah Jones and most recently Christina Aguilera.
11. Toni Braxton holds number 145 on the list with this album from 1993 which contains the song "Breathe Again".

Answer: Toni Braxton

Toni belts out "Breathe Again", "I Belong to You" and "You Mean the World to Me" on this album.

Another self titled first album on this segment of the list. Babyface wrote or co-wrote a lot of the songs on this album, including the hit "Breathe Again". Toni herself is credited on lyrics for "Best Friend" and "How Many Ways". Daryl Simmons co-wrote "Another Sad Love Song" and Antonio "L.A." Reid co-wrote "Seven Whole Days"; both were co-written with Babyface.
12. Number 144 brings us another solo Beatle; John Lennon has his second solo album at this spot.

Answer: Imagine

"Imagine", "Jealousy Guy" and "It's so Hard"

George Harrison plays guitar on some tracks, and two members of the group Badfinger play guitar on the album as well.

Yoko is co-producer, co-wrote one song and is the inspiration for another on the album.

John was correct in calling this album "Chocolate-Coated for Public Consumption", as it did much better then his first solo album.
13. "Red Headed Stranger" is the title of the album at number 143 and has become a nickname for the artist who released the album.

Answer: Willie Nelson

"Red Headed Stranger", "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" and "Down Yonder" help tell a story on this concept album.

In a story set in the old American west, the red headed stranger is a preacher who killed his wife, her lover and a bar room girl. This sets the preacher to start running from the law. The story begins at the dawn of the twentieth century, a reminder of how things were only 75 years before the album's release. In the end the preacher restarts his life and starts a new family in Denver.

A character in the movie "Pale Rider" who is played by Clint Eastwood and is called only "Preacher" could have had a past like the Red Headed Stranger.
14. ZZ Top gives us this offering at number 142, which has "A Sharp Dressed Man" and "Legs".

Answer: Eliminator

ZZ Top gained a larger fan base with this album and its music videos including "Sharp Dressed Man", "Legs" and "Gimme All Your Lovin'".

The videos featured a classic Ford Coupe with three sexy women driving it and always helping out some young man to gain confidence. The videos for the follow up album "Afterburner" have the car getting wrecked, and the band members taking off in similar Ford Coupe that is now designed as a spaceship.

ZZ Top has had the same band members for 40 years, and their music is based in Southern Rock and Blues. The two guitarists Billy Gibbons and Joe "Dusty" Hill have trademark long beards, which it has been proven you couldn't pay them a million dollars to shave off; that was offered by Gillette. Frank Beard is the cleanshaven drummer.
15. This band led by Maurice White gives us "Gratitude" at number 141.

Answer: Earth, Wind and Fire

On this album are "Shining Star", "Sunshine" and "New World Symphony".

Earth, Wind and Fire were formed in Chicago and this is their second album on the list. "Gratitude" was a double album featuring many live tracks from the "That's the Way of the World" tour and some new numbers. The horn section of the band was credited for the first time on this album.
