Question 1 of 10
1. Hey everybody, I'm Mukpup, which is actually short for the group Mucky Pup. My favorite band of all time is an unorthodox marriage of surf music and punk rock. The 2006 documentary, loudQUIETloud, is about this group's 2004 reunion tour. Where is my mind? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Hey, everybody, I'm Spaudrey, a mashup of my wife and my names; I am the Sp- part (Spence). I've been listening to so much music since before high school, I have several favorites. The one who has stayed with me from the beginning will forever be associated with New York City. My favorite song of his, "Miami 2017", came from "Turnstiles", an early album in his career. Who is this singer? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. I'm carmeller; my username is a play off my real name! There's a special place in my heart for a Boston trio that was led by the late Mark Sandman. This band's signature "low rock" sound was a result of its unusual combination of instruments - drums, saxophone, and two-string bass. "Cure for Pain" was perhaps one of their more well-known albums. Who is it? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Hello everyone, I'm Zeitgeist2011. I was a big fan of this band but couldn't yet drive in 1967, so I convinced my older brother to take me along to see one of HIS favorite groups, Herman's Hermits, seeing that MY favorite group was opening for them. I suppose I could have just taken the magic bus. What future headlining musical act opened for Herman's Hermits, creating a rather unique double billing in 1967? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Hi, I'm Duchess716 (my birthday). My pick is a Midwest rock band formed at the University of Illinois in 1967. Their first breakthrough album was 1n 1977 "You Can Tune a Piano but You Can't Tuna Fish". Their top forty album came three years later, "Hi Infidelity". Which is it? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Hi gang, I'm spxmet2! My guys come from "NorCal" and are considered by many of the newer hard rock bands to be not just one of the best heavy metal bands, but one of the best bands of the time. 16 Grammy wins out of 18 nominations and 13 multi-platinum records don't disprove that theory. Their breakout album was self-titled, but many refer to it as the "Black Album". What band is it? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Hello, BDOWNING here. My favorite band came out of San Francisco in the late 1960's. Most of the fame for the band comes out of the lead singer. Some have called the lead singer Maurice (WA-AAH, WA-OWWW), but what should you call the band collectively? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Zeitgeist here. I have an eclectic band to put on the list here of Midwest Players' favorite musical artists. I can't pinpoint the style of their music other than to say it isn't something you can pigeonhole. They had big hit albums-no, scratch that, they had ALBUMS such as "Freak Out!", "Mothermania" and "Uncle Meat". The head of the group would go on to a solo career that garnered similar cult success, and he would also foster the fledgling careers of his children Moon and Dweezil. What was the name of this group? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Hey, everyone, I'm Smartacus. My favorite band formed in 1967 as a blues band. But they are primarily known for their more pop stylings of the 1970's, an alternative to the disco of the era. The band is included in millions of music lover's album collections most specifically for a mega-album released in 1977, an album that dealt with the personal relationship meltdowns of some of the band members. That pain expressed in song created the album that has sold more than forty million copies worldwide. What band is it? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. JMElston, Team Leader, checking in here. I prefer the music of the '60s and '70s. Several of my favorite artists have already been mentioned by my team mates. One of my favorite groups formed in 1967 in the Midwest. They are still releasing albums, although their personnel has changed over the years. I'll remember them for "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" and "Wishing You Were Here" among other hits. Who are they? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: The Pixies

Back in January, 1986, Black Francis with Joey Santiago, placed an ad looking for a female bassist. Kim Deal was the only person to respond, but arrived at the audition without a bass guitar as she had never played the instrument before. Later, Kim's husband suggested they hire drummer David Lovering, whom Kim had met at her wedding reception. The Pixies were born.

Answer: Billy Joel

Billy Joel has released over fifteen albums of new and live material, and has been an icon of NYC for many years. His song "New York State of Mind" (also from the album "Turnstiles") is a staple and a highlight of every concert of Billy's. Playing piano myself, I gravitated to him early on in my pop music exposure.

In my attempt to find a favorite artist for this team quiz that I haven't written a personal quiz on, I realized, I have done a quiz on four of my favorite artists (Billy Joel, Seal, Howard Jones, Bobby McFerrin), so I went with the one who has been on my favorites list the longest.
Who is it?

Answer: Morphine

Morphine were active from 1989 to 1999 and recorded five full-length studio albums during this time. They had a singular sound which grew somewhat in complexity over the years. Tragically, Mark Sandman collapsed on stage in Palestrina, Italy on July 3, 1999 and was pronounced dead of a heart attack later that evening. Sandman was the driving force behind Morphine, and without him they disbanded.

Although "Cure for Pain" is probably their most well-known album, I'd recommend starting with "Yes" or "The Night" if you're thinking about getting hooked on Morphine.

Answer: The Who

Yes, in 1967, the Who opened for Herman's Hermits. After a rousing version of "My Generation", Pete Townsend smashed his guitar which was bewildering for those who were there to hear Herman's Hermits play "Mrs. Brown, You Have A Lovely Daughter" and "Henry VIII". A few months later I saw Country Joe and the Fish in concert smash a ukelele as an obvious homage to the Who.

Answer: REO Speedwagon

You can hear their music on classic rock stations: "Golden Country", "Roll with the Changes", "Ridin' the Storm Out" and many more.
The REO Motor Car Company was founded in 1904 by Ransom E. Olds. The Speedwagon was a flat bed truck and fire truck.

Answer: Metallica

Each of Metallica's studio albums are at least certified double platinum, platinum signifying one million copies sold ("St. Anger" and "Death Magnetic" are both 2x, "Kill 'Em All" and "RELoad" are 3x, "Ride the Lightning" and "Load" are 5x, "Master of Puppets" is 6x, "...And Justice for All" is 8x, and "Metallica" is 15x Platinum).

Their first live album following "Metallica" also reached 15x platinum.
7. Hello, BDOWNING here. My favorite band came out of San Francisco in the late 1960's. Most of the fame for the band comes out of the lead singer. Some have called the lead singer Maurice (WA-AAH, WA-OWWW), but what should you call the band collectively?

Answer: Steve Miller Band

Yes, some have called him "Space Cowboy", and yes, some have called him the "Gangster of Love". But what everyone should call him is a hit maker, having three songs make Number One on the American Billboard chart. He still is a mainstay on the classic rock stations with its like "The Joker", "Jet Airliner", and "Take the Money and Run".

Answer: The Mothers of Invention

Frank Zappa formed my fave band in 1964, and had limited success in different configurations of the band for over ten years. The Mothers of Invention would officially disband in 1975, but forms of the group have toured occasionally since. Frank would continue on as a solo artist, his biggest success coming with the rock opera album, "Joe's Garage". Frank Zappa, the man behind "the Mothers", died in 1993.

Answer: Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac's album "Rumours" broke records for sales and weeks at Number One in the U.S. They tried to recreate the success later on with the albums "Tusk" and "Mirage", but oftentimes the best music stems from emotional pain, and that pain had been released already in "Rumours". And between John and Christine McVie's marriage ending, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks relationship ending, and Mick Fleetwood's marriage crumbling, the emotional roller coaster they were experiencing in the years just before "Rumours" led to one of the greatest albums ever.

Answer: Chicago

Chicago was the leading US singles charting group during the 1970s, according to Billboard Magazine. In 1967 the group formed in Chicago, Illinois. They were originally known as "The Big Thing." Then they became "The Chicago Transit Authority," which changed to Chicago when they were threatened by a lawsuit from the actual CTA. The band has changed personnel over the years. Two of the most well-known members were Peter Cetera and Terry Kath. Over the years the band has had 5 number 1 albums and 21 top ten hit singles.

"Chicago XXXIII: O Christmas Three" was released in October 2011. In addition, Rhino Records recently released "Chicago XXXIV: Live in '75," a concert from 1975. Keep on rocking!
