Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This famous orchestral piece by Maurice Ravel premiered in 1928. It features a repeated theme that slowly builds to a crescendo. It was originally written to be performed for the ballet. What work, given a "Ten" by Bo Derek, is this?

Answer: Bolero

Perhaps Ravel's most popular piece, "Bolero" was a work inspired by a commissioning from the famous dancer Ida Rubinstein, who wanted a piece for the ballet. After several false starts arranging others' themes, Ravel decided to use his own short theme and repeat it many times, reorchestrating and gradually increasing its intensity each time.

2. Before Phil Collins, another singer-songwriter, famous for his outrageous stage costumes, was the front man for the band, Genesis. He left in 1975 to pursue a solo career with successful songs like "Solsbury Hill" and "Sledgehammer". Who is this?

Answer: Peter Gabriel

While all four choices were once part of a band and then went solo, it's Peter Gabriel who fronted for Genesis. Bill Idol was in the band Generation X (or Gen X near the end), Gerry Rafferty was in Stealer's Wheel ("Stuck in the Middle") and Gary Wright was in Spooky Tooth.

3. Which anti-establishment genre did 'new wave' music grow out of in the 1970s and 1980s?

Answer: Punk

Punk bands of the 1970s often created very short, very fast-paced songs that were stripped down, sometimes political, and often aggressive. New wave bands kept some of the elements of punk, but mixed them with the lighter side of pop. Punk songs were stripped bare, created using just vocals, drums, a guitar, and a bass; new wave bands incorporated synthesizers and other elements of electronic music, too.

4. Yusuf Islam has enjoyed chart success on both sides of the Atlantic, with hits such as "Morning has Broken", "Peace Train" and "Matthew and Son". Under what name did he enjoy these hits?

Answer: Cat Stevens

Yusuf Islam was born as Steven Demetre Georgiou in England in 1948 to Greek Cypriot parents. As Cat Stevens, he enjoyed considerable chart success in the UK and the US in the 1960's and 70's. He converted to Islam, and changed his name, in 1978.

George Michael was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in London in 1963, also from a Greek Cypriot background.

5. In Gaetano Donizetti's opera "Lucia Di Lammermoor", what is Lammermoor?

Answer: Range of hills in Scotland

The Lammermuirs (An Lomair Mōr in Gaelic) are a range of hills in south-east Scotland. Donizetti's opera is based on Sir Walter Scott's 1819 novel "The Bride of Lammermoor". There are two ranges of hills in New Zealand (Lammermoors and Lammerlaws) named after the Scottish hills. The etymology of Lammermuirs is uncertain.

7. "Da do ron ron. Da do ron ron". When Mozart got an "earworm"-- part of a song stuck in his head--which research-supported remedy worked for him?

Answer: Play out the entire song

Scientists such as Professor James Kellaris found that 99 per cent of us get lyrics, a tune or an advertisement jingle "stuck" in the brain, for a few minutes or even for days at a time. Singing out the entire melody often breaks it up. It seems that Mozart knew this.

A melody anyone left unfinished drove him bananas. He would race to his piano and play the whole thing out. Other suggestions are sing a different song, get busy, and chew gum. Or, just accept your fate. You have "repetunitis". Your brain is singing to itself over and over, like an itch.
