Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fell in Love With a Boy
Answer: Joss Stone
Joscelyn Stoker, known professionally as Joss Stone, came to prominence with her re-working of The White Stripes' "Fell In Love With a Girl". The first single from her debut album "The Soul Sessions", it was released in 2004 when Stone was just 16 years of age. It reached the UK top 20 and hit the charts in various countries around the world.
2. Super Duper Love
Answer: Joss Stone
"Super Duper Love (Are You Digging on Me?)" was the second single released by Joss Stone in 2004. A cover of a 1975 track by Sugar Billy, itself inspired by Aretha Franklin's "Groovin'", it reached the UK top 20 and the top ten in Croatia.
3. You Had Me
Answer: Joss Stone
In September 2004, "You Had Me" was released as the lead single from Stone's second album "Mind, Body & Soul". It became her first UK top ten hit and the album reached number one, making Stone the youngest number one artist ever at that time.
4. Tell Me 'bout It
Answer: Joss Stone
Despite it being her third album and having by that time appeared in the movie "Eragon" (2006), Stone's 2007 release was called "Introducing Joss Stone". "Tell Me 'bout It" was the first single off the album and continued her run of top 40 hits in the UK. It was also a top ten success in The Netherlands.
5. Heart of Stone
Answer: The Rolling Stones
"Heart of Stone", an original track written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, was released as a single in the US in 1964, reaching the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100. The UK had to wait until 1965 for its release when it appeared as a track on the album "Out of Our Heads".
6. It's All Over Now
Answer: The Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones hit the top of the UK singles chart for the first time with "It's All Over Now", a song that had been suggested to them by New York disc jockey Murray the K. Released in 1964, it was a cover of a song by The Valentinos, the band of the Womack brothers, including the song's co-writer, Bobby.
He was apparently not happy with the Stones' version of the song but very happy with the royalty check that it engendered.
7. Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)
Answer: The Rolling Stones
"Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)" was a single from the 1973 album "Goat's Head Soup", reaching the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100. The track, in part about police violence in the US, featured the piano playing of Billy Preston, famous for being the only artist to get credit on a song by The Beatles; "Get Back" in 1969.
8. Fool to Cry
Answer: The Rolling Stones
"Fool to Cry" was recorded when The Rolling Stones were temporarily down to a four-piece band, with lead guitarist Mick Taylor having left the band. It was the first single release from the album "Black and Blue" (1976) and reached the top 10 in numerous countries around the world, including the UK and the US.
9. Elephant Stone
Answer: The Stone Roses
"Elephant Stone" was a single that was first released by The Stone Roses in 1988. It was their third single and failed to chart. But on re-release two years later, after the band's debut album had been successful, it reached the top ten of the UK singles chart.
The strange title and lyric of the song, "Send me home like an elephant stone", has been suggested to be an allusion to Major-General Elphinstone of the British Army, a notoriously incompetent leader whose entire battalion was killed while retreating from battle in the Anglo-Afghan war of 1842.
10. She Bangs the Drums
Answer: The Stone Roses
"She Bangs the Drums" was the breakthrough single for The Stone Roses in 1989, being the first one to break into the UK top 40 singles chart. It was the second single release from their seminal self-titled debut album.
11. Fools Gold
Answer: The Stone Roses
"Fools Gold" (1989) is seen by many as the high point of the Madchester baggy scene of the late 1980s in the UK. It was originally slated to be the B-side to "What the World Is Waiting For" but despite the band's misgivings, they were persuaded to make the release a double A-side by their record label.
The label's judgment was proved to be inspired as it became the Roses' biggest hit to date, reaching the UK top ten and eventually going Platinum with sales of over 500,000 copies.
12. Love Spreads
Answer: The Stone Roses
"Love Spreads" gave The Stone Roses their biggest hit in the UK. As the lead single off the long-awaited second album, "Second Coming", it peaked at number two in the UK singles chart. It was their first new song in over four years. In the intervening years, the band had fought a legal battle with their record label, sacked their manager and become parents. When they did eventually get into the studio to record new tracks, they were distracted and lacked unity, leading their producer to quit.
Geffen, their new record label, began to get very impatient and gave the band the hurry up. Eventually in December 1994, five and a half years on from the release of their debut effort, the second album saw the light of day to a very mixed critical reception.
