Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which English band has been at the forefront of the funk scene with such hit albums as 'Emergency on Planet Earth' (1993), 'Travelling Without Moving' (1996) and 'A Funk Odyssey' (2001)?

Answer: Jamiroquai

Since soaring to the dizzying heights of number one on the UK Albums Chart for their debut album 'Emergency on Planet Earth' in 1993, Jamiroquai has gone from strength to strength in the funk/acid jazz scene. The band's frontman, Jay Kay, is notable for his unique headwear, which he wears during most live performances. 'Canned Heat', a track from their 1999 album 'Synkronized', is memorable for being the very song that the titular character in the film 'Napoleon Dynamite' does his strange yet unforgettable dance to.

Other Jamiroquai songs to have featured in films include 'Deeper Underground' in the 1998 film 'Godzilla'.
2. A perennial argument centers around what should be considered this band's last album. Which band's last album may or may not have been 'Abbey Road'?

Answer: The Beatles

The official title for "last Beatles album" is up for debate. 'Let it Be' was the last album released by the band, but most of it was recorded before 'Abbey Road'. The Beatles, also known as John, Paul, George and Ringo, are arguably the greatest band of all time, despite only being together for a decade. What other band could have a compilation album ('The Beatles 1') released thirty years after disbanding hit number one on most of the major world charts?
3. Known for their "gypsy jazz" and "electro swing" musical styles, which regal-sounding French band released their self-titled debut album in 2008, followed by 'Panic' in 2012?

Answer: Caravan Palace

Formed in 2005, Caravan Palace originally consisted of three musicians who supposedly made music for silent porn films. When they decided to join together and were discovered by a producer, the now-familiar Caravan Palace began to take shape as more musicians joined the group.

Their first album, 'Caravan Palace', was released in 2008 and gained them a significant following. The Parisian outfit's most popular singles include 'Jolie Coquine', 'Suzy' and 'Rock It For Me'.
4. This band started up during the post punk days of the 1970s and had some early success during the early MTV years of the 1980s, but when they released 'The Unforgettable Fire' in 1984, they were recognized as something special. With their next album, which Irish band established themselves as one of the premier bands around?

Answer: U2

'The Joshua Tree' catapulted U2 to superstar status, reaching number one on charts around the world and winning the Grammy award for album of the year. U2 had toured the United States in advance of recording the album, and it captured the band's love/hate relationship with the country, as indicated by the working title for the album, 'The Two Americas'.
5. Which British alternative rock band eagerly began their musical success with their first album 'Hopes and Fears' (2004), from which one of their most popular singles, 'Somewhere Only We Know' was taken?

Answer: Keane

Many of Keane's songs have been written by their piano player, Tim Rice-Oxley, who was originally approached by none other than Coldplay's Chris Martin to join their band in the late 1990s. Rice-Oxley declined due to the fact that Coldplay was new and Keane was already up and running (though at the time, the band was called The Lotus Eaters). With their first album out in 2004, Keane went from strength to strength with 'Under the Iron Sea' (2006) and 'Perfect Symmetry' (2008), the latter introducing electronic instruments and guitars, which didn't feature in previous albums. 'Strangeland' released in 2012, with the band announcing a hiatus from recording albums in 2013, with individual band members wanting to focus on other pursuits.
6. This band formed in the 1960s, had some classic albums in the 1970s, and was one of the biggest bands of the 1980s. Which band had two lead singers who each also had successful solo careers?

Answer: Genesis

Peter Gabriel was the original lead singer, and when he departed the band in the mid '70s, Phil Collins took over as the main vocalist. Both singers had successful careers on their own. Mike Rutherford, the bassist/guitarist for the band also had success with his own project, Mike + the Mechanics. Genesis released some of the classic albums in the 1970s, particularly 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway', and during the 1980s, they were a fixture on MTV with their 'Invisible Touch' album.
7. Which feline-sounding ska group from Melbourne, Australia, has been jazzing up the Australian music charts with their diverse musical styles since their eponymous first album and their memorable first single 'Hello' in 2003?

Answer: The Cat Empire

Experimenting with jazz, reggae, Latin and, of course, ska styles throughout their career, The Cat Empire has undoubtedly injected a much-needed dose of first class music into the Australian music scene since their inception in the late 1990s/early 2000s.

Their distinctive musical sounds, which feature brass instruments aplenty, have evolved and changed from album to album, with a healthy mixture of upbeat, toe-tapping tunes and slow, sometimes melancholic melodies. The band's logo resembles a cat's eye with a crown, owing to their name.
8. This trio actually had its start as youngsters in the 1950s. They had several hits in the late 1960s and early 1970s before hitting superstar status during the disco age. Which family act is it?

Answer: Bee Gees

Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb became famous in the late 1960s with such hits as 'Holiday', 'To Love Somebody', 'Massachusetts' and 'I've Got to Get a Message to You'. But in the mid 1970s, their career really took off, first with 'Jive Talkin'' and then with the soundtrack to 'Saturday Night Fever'.

They continued into the next decades but didn't achieve the worldwide success they had in the 1970s. Younger brother Andy Gibb also had chart success and was a teen idol during the late 1970s.
9. While they started off slowly with 'Pablo Honey' (1993), which British rock band gained significant popularity with their second and third albums, 'The Bends' (1995) and 'OK Computer' (1997)?

Answer: Radiohead

With the release of their first single 'Creep' in 1992 and the album 'Pablo Honey' the next year, Radiohead gained a modest following thanks to their indie sound. It wasn't until 'The Bends' that Radiohead cemented themselves in the annals of British musical culture. 'OK Computer' built upon their success with such popular singles as 'Karma Police' and 'Paranoid Android', which has been described as Radiohead's answer to Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.

Their fourth album, 'Kid A' (2000), moved towards a more experimental sound, as did albums five and six, 'Amnesiac' (2001) and 'Hail to the Thief' (2003).

Despite this, their popularity was still as high as ever, with five albums in a row reaching number one on the UK albums chart.
10. Which British "orchestral rock" band, formed in the 1970s, has had such hits as 'Mr. Blue Sky', 'Don't Bring Me Down' and 'Xanadu'?

Answer: Electric Light Orchestra

Fronted by Jeff Lynne, the Electric Light Orchestra, commonly referred to simply as ELO, were more popular across the pond than in their native UK. Nevertheless, they had a string of hit singles and albums almost on a yearly basis between 1970 and 1983. ELO performed the soundtrack to the aforementioned 'Xanadu' in 1980, and was a collaborative effort with the film's star, Olivia Newton-John.
