Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the start of this little sojourn I came across a song I haven't heard for many years. The first verse is: 'Do you know where you're going to? Do you like the things that life is showing you Where are you going to? Do you know...?' I know this was sung by Diana Ross and was the theme to a film, can you tell me what film this was and complete the title of the song ? 'Theme From ______'

Answer: Mahogany

OK! The full title was actually 'Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)'. It reached number 5 on the UK charts and number one on the Billboard Hot 100, in 1975, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Song losing out to 'I'm Easy' from the film 'Nashville'.

At the awards ceremony Diana Ross sang the song live via satellite from the Netherlands.
2. The second song I found in my travels was by a group who were icons of 'Southern Rock' even though they originated in San Francisco. Creedence Clearwater Revival had a number two Billboard hit in 1969 with what coloured river?

Answer: Green

'Green River' reached number two on the Billboard charts and number 19 in the UK. It was written by John Fogerty and is based on Putah Creek in California where he used to spend time when he was young.

The title 'Green River' came from an American soft drink bottle. According to an interview John Fogerty did for Rolling Stone, he used to go into a 'soda-fountain' and Green River was his favourite drink.
3. The next recording I clicked on was 'Jeepster' by T.Rex. In 1971 T.Rex attained three top five singles on the UK charts. 'Jeepster' reached number two in November of that year. Who was the lead singer of T.Rex?

Answer: Marc Bolan

In 1971 Marc Bolan and T.Rex had just left Fly records to take up a contract with EMI - Without obtaining consent from the band, Fly Records released 'Jeepster' in November.
Another one of my favourite T.Rex tracks is 'Debora' which was originally released in 1968 (reaching number 34 in the UK charts) and re-released in 1972 when it got to number 7 in the UK. (sorry at the time they were recording under the name Tyrannosaurus Rex)

Whilst Marc Bolan was at school, he played guitar for a trio called 'Susie and The Hoops'. 12 year old Helen Shapiro was the lead singer.
4. Typically Tropical were a One Hit Wonder in 1975 with a song about going on holiday. The lyrics of the first verse were: 'Ladies and gentlemen this is Captain Tobias Willcock Welcoming you aboard Coconut Airways Flight 372 to Bridgetown (------?) We will be flying at a height of 32.000 feet and at an air speed of approximately 600 miles per hour. Refreshments will be served after take-off. Kindly fasten your safety belts and refrain from smoking until the aircraft is airborne.' Can you tell me which destination they were going to?

Answer: Barbados

Yes, Typically Tropical were going to 'Barbados'. The Vengaboys released a cover version in 1999 entitled 'We're Going To Ibiza!'.

Various session musicians were employed to play in the group including Chris Spedding who is probably better known for his UK number four hit, from 1975, 'Motor Bikin''.
5. Here we are in 1975 and a British group called Pilot have released their only number one UK single entitled 'January' - ironically reaching number one in February of that year. Which part of the UK was this band from?

Answer: Scotland

Pilot was formed by two members of the very successful Bay City Rollers, in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1973. They only had two major hits, 'Magic', which reached number 11 in the UK, number 5 in the US and number three in Australia in 1974, and 'January' which topped the charts in the UK, Germany and Australia.
6. This little number is by a group who were a One Hit Wonder - 'Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)' reached number one in the UK in 1970 and number five on the Billboard charts. The band known for this song was Edison...what?

Answer: Lighthouse

Tony Burrows, the lead singer of Edison Lighthouse, was also the lead singer of a number of other bands at the same time, including White Plains, The Flowerpot Men, Brotherhood of Man, First Class and The Pipkins.

Tony Burrows held a UK 'Top of the Pops' record for being the only person to appear THREE times in one show fronting THREE different bands (White Plains - 'My Baby Loves Lovin'', Brotherhood of Man - 'United We Stand' and Edison Lighthouse -'Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)').
7. 1968 and a song which reached number two in the US and number one in the UK was 'Young Girl'. Who released this single?

Answer: Gary Puckett and the Union Gap

In 1974 the song was released again in the UK reaching number 6 in the charts.

'Young Girl' was the second release for the group and was also their second million selling single.

The band only lasted a short time (four years) but made their presence known. They released six top twenty records (in the US) and headlined at a White House reception for Prince Charles and Princess Anne during that time.
8. Gerry Marsden was the lead singer of a band in the 1960s, the group had a number of hits but the one I am listening to is 'Ferry Cross the Mersey'. What was the name of Gerry Marsden's group?

Answer: The Pacemakers

Gerry and the Pacemakers reached number eight, in the UK, in 1964 and number 6 in the US in 1965 with 'Ferry Cross the Mersey.
The Dakotas were Billy J. Kramers backing band.
The Dreamers backed Freddy Garrity.
The Shadows were associated with Cliff Richard.

Gerry and the Pacemakers hold the distinction of being the first group to reach number one on the UK charts with their first three singles releases. They held this record for twenty years until Frankie Goes to Hollywood equaled it in the 1980s
9. Marianne Faithfull recorded the song 'As Time Goes By' in 1964 reaching number 9 in the UK and number 22 on the Billboard charts.

Answer: False

The song that brought Marianne her first hit was 'As TEARS Go By'. Written by Rolling Stones members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, along with their manager Andrew Loog Oldham, this is one of their first original compositions.

Marianne Faithfull was only 17 when she recorded the single which was originally to be called 'As Time Goes By'. Andrew Oldham was the person to change the title.

The Rolling Stones recorded their own version of the song in 1965 due to 'popular demand' after DJs started playing the track off of the 'December's Children (And Everybody's)' album. This beat Marianne's version reaching number six on the Billboard charts
10. Well I've found one of the great protest songs that were so prevalent in the '60s. 'Eve of Destruction' was released and reached number one on the Billboard charts in 1965 when it was sung by whom?

Answer: Barry McGuire

'Eve of Destruction' was originally offered to The Byrds but was rejected by the group, The Turtles recorded an album version which was released shortly before Barry McGuire's single. The Turtles version finally charted in 1970 at 100 on the Billboard charts.
Barry McGuires version reached number one but he never broke into the top 40 after that.

Barry McGuire has stated that the vocal track on 'Eve of Destruction' was never meant to be released as it is and was meant to be re-recorded. A DJ on KFWB in Los Angeles was 'accidentally' given a rough copy which he played on the radio... the rest is history.
