Answer: "A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean" (1973)
One of the staples of the "Big 8" (you'll hear a good bit about that with Bubba's live shows). Back in the day when it was released on vinyl, the record company was a bit concerned about the 'racy' title. Their solution? They put a picture of a "screw" instead of the word. When that didn't fly, they just shortened the title.
2. This Hotel Room
Answer: "Havana Daydreamin'" (1976)
If you are old enough to recognize 'Magic Fingers' for a King Size Bed, you should remember this song. If that isn't enough, all you had to do to get it going was 'put in quarter - turn out the lights".
This track was co-written with Steve Goodman (along with many other concert favorites).
3. King of Somewhere Hot
Answer: "Hot Water" (1988)
Jimmy was never too protective about sharing the writing spotlight. Many of the creations go to the well known Reefer Mac McAnally. This one, however, was penned by the Coral Reefer King of the Steel Drums, Robert Greenridge.
4. Math Suks
Answer: "Beach House on the Moon" (1999)
Inspiration can come from anywhere! Legend has it that the inspiration for this song came from graffiti on a bridge in Key West, Florida. Math teachers (myself included) were not amused. OK, maybe we were a little bit. :-)
5. Down at the Lah De Dah
Answer: "Life on the Flip Side" (2020)
Going through the discography and creating an epic Bar Crawl from Buffett songs would be a highlight of any travel agency's special trips. From Captain Tony's Saloon (Key West), Bama Breeze (Orange Beach, AL), or Margaritaville ('Any place you want it to be') - "You Had To Be There" - Jimmy Buffett (October 1978).
Internet sleuths put the origin of this song somewhere in Ireland. This one leads off the album and peaked at number 13 on the Hot Country Songs and number eight on the Hot 100 (Billboard).
6. Who's the Blonde Stranger?
Answer: "Riddles in the Sand" (1984)
With MTV making its debut in 1981, Jimmy made one of his 'mini-movie' videos. Some parrotheads posit this story as the prequel to 'Frank and Lola' (Last Mango in Paris) released the following year. Appropriately, Jimmy's wife Jane plays the role of 'The Blonde Stranger' while Florida Governor Bob Graham also makes a cameo appearance.
7. Hey, Good Lookin
Answer: "License to Chill" (2004)
A whole bunch of guests appear on this album, not to mention a number of covers. "Sea of Heartbreak" is a duet with George Strait - originally, it was released by Don Gibson in 1961. The Grateful Dead contributed the original "Scarlet Begonias". The song in question was a Hank Williams Sr. original and features vocals from Clint Black, Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith and George Strait.
8. The Captain and the Kid
Answer: "Down to Earth" (1970)
As the Son of a Son, this is one of the most favorite songs I got to share with the son of my own. This was written for his grandfather - of whom Jimmy was the son of a son.
9. Vampires, Mummies and the Holy Ghost
Answer: "Fruitcakes" (1994)
Lyrics in the song suggest knowledge of a serial killer in Jimmy's childhood neighborhood. Contrary to popular conspiracy theorists, there was never a "murderer down the block, who nurtured orchids and raised hamsters".
10. Fins
Answer: "Volcano" (1979)
Every so often, a song breaks out of its shell and finds its way out into the world. Also, one of the Big 8 played at every live show, it even found a home after every touchdown scored by the Miami Dolphins (NFL).
