Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes" was a 1977 number by which artist?

Answer: Elvis Costello

"(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes" was a single from Elvis Costello's first album, "My Aim Is True". It was released in 1977 between "Alison" and "Watching the Detectives", in a remarkable series of singles. Elvis Costello (Declan McManus) was born in London in 1954, the son of big band singer Ross McManus, who was most famous for singing the song "Secret Lemonade Drinker" for the R. White's Lemonade brand.

2. Who had a single in the 1970s called "The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)", a song written by Peter Green?

Answer: Fleetwood Mac

Peter Green had been the creative leader behind the band Fleetwood Mac (despite its name being derived from Mick Fleetwood's and John McVie's surnames), from their formation in 1967, with songs such as "Black Magic Woman", "Albatross", and "Man of the World". The 1970 song "The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)" was the last he recorded with the group due to issues with drugs and alienation from other members. It was the group's last UK top ten single until "Tusk" in 1979.

3. "Red Red Wine" was a hit for UB40 in the 1980s, but who recorded it originally?

Answer: Neil Diamond

"Red Red Wine" was on Neil Diamond's second album "Just for You" (1967), which was packed with other classic Diamond compositions, including "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon", "I'm a Believer", "Solitary Man" and "Shilo". "Red Red Wine" was covered a few times, but the biggest success with the song was by British pop reggae band UB40, who released it in 1982. The band, from Birmingham, and named after a UK Government benefit form for the unemployed, were allegedly unaware that Neil Diamond wrote the song, thinking that "N. Diamond" was a Jamaican reggae artist.

4. "Unbearably White" was a 2019 single by which band?

Answer: Vampire Weekend

"Unbearably White" was a single from Vampire Weekend's fourth album, and first since the departure of band member Rostam Batmanglij, "Father of the Bride". The song, written by frontman Ezra Koenig, is a reaction to a critic's comment that the band's music was "unbearably white", but treats the phrase in a jokey, offhand way. Other tracks on the album included "This Life" and "Big Blue".

5. "Little Red Corvette" was a 1983 song by which artist?

Answer: Prince

Released in 1983, "Little Red Corvette" was the second single from Prince's album, "1999". Together with the album's title track, it was a breakthrough single commercially for the magical Minneapolis multi-instrumentalist. Despite Prince's guitar virtuosity, the solo on "Little Red Corvette" was played by Dez Dickerson, from Prince's backing band, the Revolution.

6. Which legendary artist sang the theme song to the 1995 James Bond movie, "GoldenEye"?

Answer: Tina Turner

"GoldenEye" was something of a James Bond reboot, the seventeenth in the series, marking the debut for Pierce Brosnan in the role. Bono and The Edge, from U2, wrote the theme song for Tina Turner. One of the strongest Bond themes, with a stellar delivery, "GoldenEye" was a hit worldwide. Turner's next single was "Whatever You Want " in 1996.

7. Which colourfully named band recorded "Black Night" in 1970?

Answer: Deep Purple

"Black Night" was a 1970 single by the classic Deep Purple line-up of Gillan, Blackmore, Glover, Paice and Lord. It was written as a single to promote the album "Deep Purple in Rock", but the band's biggest UK hit single didn't make it onto an album at all until being added as a bonus track to the 25th anniversary edition of "Deep Purple In Rock" in 1995.

8. Who sang "Welcome to the Black Parade" in 2006?

Answer: My Chemical Romance

"Welcome to the Black Parade" was a single from the 2006 album, "The Black Parade", by My Chemical Romance. A track with an expansive feel, guitarist Ray Toro said that it "is like our 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. It's probably the most epic song on the record". The single and its accompanying video by Samuel Bayer were massively popular.

Hopefully you found the picture had a romantic feel.
9. It's been covered by greats such as Buddy Holly and Nina Simone, but who wrote and performed "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" first in 1956?

Answer: Chuck Berry

Chuck Berry wrote "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" after witnessing police arresting a Hispanic man in California. He recorded it in 1956, and it was a hit on the R&B charts that year. Berry's lyrics have a playful braggadocio: "Milo Venus was a beautiful lass, She had the world in the palm of her hand, But she lost both her arms in a wrestling match, To beat a brown eyed handsome man."

10. "Fools Gold" was a hit for which band from Manchester, England in 1989?

Answer: The Stone Roses

"Fools Gold" was released on a double A-side single with "What the World Is Waiting For" in 1989, becoming the first UK top ten hit for the Stone Roses. It was written by singer Ian Brown and guitarist John Squire, with bassist Mani and drummer Reni making up remainder of the line-up. It was a dance track influenced by James Brown's 1970 track, "Funky Drummer".
