Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gladys Knight was eager to get to Georgia; can you remember what time the train left?

Answer: Midnight

Gladys Knight and The Pips caught the "Midnight Train to Georgia" in 1976. It was a number one hit in America but in Britain reached number ten.
2. What did Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi" take away?

Answer: My old man

Seventeen hit albums in Britain but only two hit singles for Joni Mitchell. "Big Yellow Taxi" got to number eleven in 1970.

"Late last night
I heard the screen door slam
And a big yellow taxi
Took away my old man;"
3. "Life goes on day after day, Hearts torn in every way. So ___ 'cross the Mersey 'Cause this land's the place I love, And here I'll stay." How did the singer get across?

Answer: Ferry

OK, you might have smiled at 'walk' but in August 2006 a 6 foot 9 inches tall gentleman called Graham Boanas did just that! He did it at low tide and managed to get across with just his head sticking out of the water.
Gerry and The Pacemakers took a more conventional "Ferry 'Cross the Mersey" in 1964. The single reached number eight.
4. Peter, Paul and Mary scored a number two hit in 1970 with "Leaving on a Jet Plane". Who wrote the song?

Answer: John Denver

Or "Heaving on a Jet Plane" as we always used to sing. Good song, though, it actually did one better in the States and went to number one.
5. "Round, round wheels Goin' round, round, round; Down up pedals Down up down (ah-ooh) But I gotta get across To the other side of town Before the sun goes down" Who had a hit singing these words?

Answer: The Mixtures

It's not properly explained why the singer has to get across town before the sun goes down; maybe his pushbike has no lights; maybe his girlfriend turns into a vampire at nightfall or maybe the writer was just struggling for a rhyme? Surely not...
"The Pushbike Song" was a number two hit for the Australian group in 1971. They must have had a puncture after that as it was their only UK success.
6. Who had a hit single with "Motor Bikin'" in 1975?

Answer: Chris Spedding

Another one-hit-wonder here; Chris Spedding took the lyrically-challenged "Motor Bikin'" to number fourteen.
7. What had Paul Weller bought just before he was mugged in "Down in a Tube Station at Midnight"?

Answer: A take-away curry

I can't think of too many songs about mugging (10cc and Rod Stewart come to mind) but this one is frighteningly real; the noise of the trains in the background add to the threatening nature.

"Whispers in the shadows - gruff blazing voices
Hating, waiting;
"Hey boy" they shout - "have you got any money?"
And I said - "I've a little money and a take-away curry,
I'm on my way home to my wife.""

The Jam took this to number fifteen in 1978.
8. Who sang "My Ship is Coming In"?

Answer: The Walker Brothers

"My Ship is Coming In" was a number three hit for The Walker Brothers in 1965. The three members of the group were in fact unrelated to each other.
9. "Bus stop, wet day, she's there, I say, "Please share my umbrella" Bus stop, bus goes, she stays, love grows under my umbrella." Which group sang about this chance meeting?

Answer: The Hollies

"Bus Stop" was just one of the eighteen top-ten singles enjoyed by The Hollies in the 'sixties and 'seventies. It reached number five in 1966.
10. Who had a hit with "Funky Moped"?

Answer: Jasper Carrott

Having been a successful comic on the local scene for many years, "Funky Moped" kick-started Brummie Jasper Carrott's national success. To be honest "Funky Moped" was terrible and probably would have been consigned to the dustbins had not the dear old BBC banned the 'B' side because of its rather lewd take on "The Magic Roundabout".

The banning inevitably aroused interest and probably on the strength of the 'B' side Jasper took his only hit single to number five in 1975.
