Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What's Love Got to Do With It?
Answer: Tina Turner
Released in 1984, this song appeared on Tina's album "Private Dancer." It was not only her best selling single, but it was also the name of the 1993 biopic about her life. The song's writers, Terry Britten and Graham Lyle, originally offered the song to British pop star Cliff Richard.
2. For What It's Worth
Answer: Buffalo Springfield
Written by Stephen Stills and released in 1966, "For What It's Worth" was Buffalo Springfield's only top ten single. Stills wrote the song while the band was playing at the Whisky a Go Go on the Hollywood Sunset Strip, after witnessing a clash between police and young protesters. Rolling Stone magazine ranked the song 63rd on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
3. What a Wonderful World
Answer: Louis Armstrong
Louis Armstrong's version of this song, written by Bob Thiele and George David Weiss, was first released in 1967. However, the song didn't become a hit until after it appeared in the 1988 film "Good Morning, Vietnam." It reached number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.
It's been covered many times, by artists as diverse as Willie Nelson, Nick Cave, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, Anne Murray, and Rod Stewart.
4. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
Answer: U2
Released on the 1987 album "The Joshua Tree," this song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It was nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the 1988 Grammys. Rolling Stone magazine ranked the song 93rd on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
5. What a Fool Believes
Answer: The Doobie Brothers
"What a Fool Believes" was on the 1978 Doobie Brothers' album "Minute by Minute." It became a number one hit in the year it was released as a single in 1979. The song was written as a collaboration between Michael McDonald, the Doobie Brothers' lead singer, and Kenny Loggins.
6. Just What I Needed
Answer: The Cars
"Just What I Needed" was released by The Cars on their self-titled debut album in 1978. It was their first single and reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it 369th on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
7. You Can't Always Get What You Want
Answer: The Rolling Stones
Released on the 1969 album "Let It Bleed," "You Can't Always Get What You Want" reached number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was named the 100th greatest song on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Oddly, that's not famous Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts on the song. Jimmy Miller played drums because, according to Mick Jagger, "Charlie couldn't play the groove."
8. What I Like About You
Answer: The Romantics
"What I Like About You" was the first single released by The Romantics from their 1980 self-titled debut album. It only reached number 49 on the Billboard Hot 100, but became very popular over time after its video was frequently shown on MTV, and the song was used in Budweiser television commercials.
9. What About Love?
Answer: Heart
Heart released "What About Love?" on their 1985 self-titled album, "Heart." Because the group hadn't had a hit since "Tell It Like it Is" in 1980, this song's number ten ranking on the Billboard Hot 100 was a comeback for them. It's actually a cover version of a song released by Canadian band Toronto in 1982.
10. Flashdance...What A Feeling
Answer: Irene Cara
As the song title suggests, this song was from the 1983 film "Flashdance." It was a huge hit, spending six weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It not only won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, it also won the Oscar for Best Original Song. It was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry in 2023.
