With the release of their 1970 album "Deep Purple in Rock," the band, which had initially been formed as a psychedelic rock and progressive rock group, shifted to a louder sound.

Not one of the big hitters of the rock band scene but have sold over 20 million albums worldwide. Commercially, their fourth studio album, "Dream Police," reached the sixth position on the Billboard 200 chart and peaked at number 41 on the UK Album Chart.

The band never really made much progress in the UK, with only two albums making it into the UK Album Charts out of a possible 20 studio albums; however, in the US, the band had 18 out of the 20 making the charts, in the top 200.
