Rush Trivia Questions

1. The first album that Rush released in the 1980s was their seventh studio album overall and the first they recorded at Le Studio in Quebec. What album was this?

From Quiz
Rush 1980-1989

Answer: Permanent Waves

Permanent Waves released in North America in early January 1980; they would record an album at Le Studio for the last time in 1993. There is contention as to the album's exact release date; it is a common misconception that the album was released on January 1st, but it actually hit shelves more than a week later.

2. What city in southern Ontario was Neil born in?

From Quiz Rush - Neil Peart

Answer: Hamilton

He was born on September 12, 1952 in Hamilton, Ontario and spent his first few years on a farm in Hagersville, not too far outside of Hamilton. His family moved to St. Catherines not too long after.

3. In which city did Rush debut live with Neil Peart for the first time?

From Quiz Rush - Live in Concert

Answer: Pittsburgh

Peart joined the group on July 29, 1974, and on August 11, 1974, they went on tour opening for Uriah Heep and Manfred Mann at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, PA.

4. What was the title of the first Rush album?

From Quiz In a RUSH

Answer: Rush

It was recorded with original drummer John Rutsey.

5. Go Stuff Ash Ants - Which Rush song title do these fractured words suggest to you?

From Quiz "Close Sir, Do The Art" - Fractured Rush

Answer: Ghost Of A Chance

Speaking in an interview whilst the band were recording the album, Neil Peart stated that he had tried to avoid writing love songs but 'Ghost of a Chance' neatly covered what he was trying to say; that when people meet randomly there is only a possibility, a ghost of a chance, that a fulfilling relationship may result but sometimes does nevertheless. The album 'Roll the Bones', released during September 1991, was the second album produced by English songwriter and Rush collaborator Rupert Hine and was Rush's fourteenth studio recording.

6. With which album did the band enter the 1980s, from which the single release 'The Spirit of Radio', became one their greatest commercial successes?

From Quiz Rush - "Packaged Like A Rebel Or A Hero"

Answer: Permanent Waves

The album 'Permanent Waves' was released on New Year's Day in 1980. After suffering with something of a burn-out with recording their previous album 'Hemispheres', this work pointed toward a new direction for the band featuring shorter, more accessible radio friendly songs. As the album's opening song 'Spirit of Radio', at a surprisingly brief three minutes for the single and just under five minutes for the album version, was the band's first major commercial success with a single release.

7. In which song can you hear the word "Snap" being said repeatedly?

From Quiz Rush Lyrics: Part III

Answer: Neurotica

"Neurotica" can be found on the album "Roll The Bones" from 1991. "Snap" can be heard repeatedly towards the back end of the song.

8. The lyrics, "...in a final flash of glory..." are featured in which song?

From Quiz Rush Lyrics: Part II

Answer: Cygnus X-1

"Cygnus X-1" can be found on the album "A Farewell To Kings" from 1977. The lyrics above are from the opening narrations as part of the "Prologue".

9. The lyrics, "You can fight- fight without ever winning, but never ever win- win without a fight..." are featured in which song?

From Quiz Rush Lyrics

Answer: Resist

"Resist" is a song off of the album "Test for Echo" from 1996. They have also performed this in a live acoustic version which can be found on the "Rush in Rio" and "R30" CDs and DVDs, as well as the "Retrospective 3" Dvd.

10. "We don't want to be victims; on that we all agree..." These are lyrics to which song?

From Quiz Rush Lyrics

Answer: Lock And Key

"Lock And Key" is the sixth track off of Rush's 12th studio album, "Hold Your Fire." This song is focused around the fact that people have the ability to kill without reason, hence the phrase "killer instinct" which is used in the song.

11. Which 'R' is the major South American city, hosts of both the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games, in which the band recorded the material used for a triple CD album released in 2003?

From Quiz Rush... A Quiz Brought To You By The Letter 'R'

Answer: Rio de Janeiro

The 2003 release 'Rush in Rio' was recorded, in the main, at the Macarana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro where the band played their final show of the 'Vapor Trails Tour'. It was during this show that Neil Peart performed a drum solo entitled 'O Baterista', or 'The Drummer' in Portuguese, of just under nine minutes!

12. Which song contains these lyrics? "A thousand years have come and gone, but time has passed me by".

From Quiz Rush Lyrics

Answer: Xanadu

The song is derived from Samuel Coleridge's "Kubla Khan". It can be found on the "Farewell to Kings" (1977) and "Exit...Stage Left" (1981) albums.

13. In the opening track, "Dreamline", what does he have a road map of?

From Quiz Rush's "Roll the Bones"

Answer: Jupiter

This was pretty close to Hollywood in the second verse, but it was SHE that had a STAR MAP of Hollywood. Neil seems fond of switching stuff around in his lyrics. One would assume that you'd have a road map of Hollywood, and a star map of Jupiter, but I guess you could make the argument that you have Hollywood STARS. That doesn't make Jupiter make any more sense, though. Oh, well.

14. Who was the drummer for Rush's debut album?

From Quiz A band called Rush part 1: Rush (1974)

Answer: John Rutsey

This album was John Rutsey's only appearance on a Rush album. Due to diabetes, Rutsey left the band and was replaced by Neil Peart. Rutsey died May 11, 2008, because of a heart attack related to diabetes.

15. Name the song with these lyrics: "Too much fuss and bother"

From Quiz Obscure Rush Lyrics

Answer: Different Strings

Rush never really wrote traditional love songs, but they had plenty of songs about relationships like "Different Strings". The song was a track on the album "Permanent Waves", originally released in 1980. The first section of the song goes as follows: "Who's come to slay the dragon? Come to watch him fall? Making arrows out of pointed words Giant killers at the call Too much fuss and bother Too much contradiction and confusion Peel away the mystery Here's a clue to some real motivation"

16. What is the first word heard on the opening track, "Animate"?

From Quiz Rush's "Counterparts"

Answer: One

At the very beginning, we hear Neil counting off before the solo drum intro to "Animate". The lyrics following are: "Polarize me Sensitize me Criticize me Civilize me"

17. To which song on "Test for Echo" did Pye Dubois contribute to the lyrics?

From Quiz Rush's "Test for Echo"

Answer: Test for Echo

Pye Dubois has collaborated with Neil Peart to write many of Rush's lyrics over the years. Other examples are "Tom Sawyer" from "Moving Pictures", "Force Ten" from "Hold Your Fire" and "Between Sun and Moon" from "Counterparts".

18. Prior to the release of "Vapor trails", there was a long hiatus between it and the band's last project, "Different Stages". How long had it been?

From Quiz Rush's "Vapor Trails"

Answer: Six years

"Different Stages" was a live album recorded after the tragedies in drummer Neil Peart's life that caused him to leave the band for six years.

19. Rush's "Tom Sawyer" describes Tom as a "modern day warrior" who has "mean, mean" what?

From Quiz Rushing into "Tom Sawyer"

Answer: pride

"A modern day warrior Mean mean stride, Today's Tom Sawyer Mean mean pride" The band Rush, which formed in 1968, has had only a few personnel changes since then: John Rutsey (drums) was replaced in 1974 by Neal Peart, and Jeff Jones (lead) was very quickly replaced by Geddy Lee. "Tom Sawyer" was written by Geddy Lee, Neal Peart and Alex Lifeson along with lyricist Pye Dubois, and was based upon a poem by Dubois called "Louis the Lawyer".

20. In Rush's "Limelight", where is the singer living?

From Quiz Rushing into the "Limelight"

Answer: lighted stage

"Living on a lighted stage Approaches the unreal For those who think and feel" Rush formed in 1968, with Jeff Jones on lead, Alex Lifeson on guitar and John Rutsey on drums. Jones lasted only a couple of weeks; Geddy Lee took over vocals and bass. Rutsey left in 1974 due to his diabetes and a dislike of touring, and was replaced by Neil Peart. Incidentally, the word 'limelight' comes from the pre-electric days of the theatre, when stage lighting was provided by directing an oxyhydrogen flame at a canister of lime (calcium oxide). Just in case you were wondering...

21. This album contained a few firsts for Rush. It was the first of their albums to have multiple instrumental tracks. It also had their shortest recorded song to date. What is it?
