Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Joe Cocker could never be accused of holding back on his 1968 number one, "With a Little Help from My Friends". Which songwriting duo wrote the song?

Answer: John Lennon and Paul McCartney

The Beatles never released this track as a single in the UK. Other acts to get to the number one spot in the sixties with Lennon/McCartney compositions include Marmalade with "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da", The Overlanders with "Michelle" and Peter and Gordon with "World Without Love".
2. The Byrds scored a number one hit in 1965 with "Mr Tambourine Man". It was a cover of whose song?

Answer: Bob Dylan

Although Bob Dylan chalked up several number one albums in the UK he never got to that position in the singles chart. The Byrds also covered "All I Really Want to Do" which got to number four. Manfred Mann also covered several Dylan numbers and "Mighty Quinn" got to number one in 1968.
3. "I'm a Believer" was a number one hit for The Monkees in 1967. Who provided the song?

Answer: Neil Diamond

Although Neil Diamond had several top ten hits in the UK, he never quite hit the top spot. Another of his compositions, "Red Red Wine" was a number one for UB40.
4. Dionne Warwick had a big hit in America with "Anyone Who Had a Heart" but in the UK it was taken to number one in 1964 by Cilla Black. Which team wrote the song?

Answer: Burt Bacharach and Hal David

Bacharach and David had wrote dozens of hits for many different acts in the sixties. They put Sandie Shaw into top spot with "There's Always Something There to Remind Me" and also wrote "Make It Easy on Yourself", a number one hit for The Walker Brothers.
5. Danny Williams (no relation to Andy) sang "Moon River" in 1961 and it went to the top. Do you know who wrote this song?

Answer: Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer

"Moon River" has been covered many times and by acts as diverse as Frank Sinatra and Morrissey, (Andy Williams covered this song but it was Danny Williams who topped the British charts). The song featured in the classic movie, "Breakfast at Tiffany's".
6. Mason Williams is best known in the UK for his guitar instrumental "Classical Gas". Which of these sixties number ones did he write?

Answer: "Cinderella Rockafella" by Esther and Abi Ofarim

So now you know who to blame! "Cinderella Rockafella" was (mercifully) a one hit wonder for the Israeli husband and wife duo in 1968.
"Come Outside" was written by Charles Blackwell and was a number one in 1962.
"Two Little Boys" was written by Theodore Morse and Edward Madden. It was the last number one of the sixties.
"Lily the Pink" reached top spot in 1968 and was adapted by the Scaffold from a rather bawdy rugby song.
7. "Nutrocker" was a number one hit for B Bumble and the Stingers in 1962. An instrumental number, it was based on a piece of classical music by which composer

Answer: Tchaikovsky

Another one hit wonder, "Nutrocker" was produced and arranged by Kim Fowley. It was based around Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite".
8. The Rolling Stones wrote most of their material themselves; however their second UK number one record was a cover of blues classic, "Little Red Rooster". Who wrote it?

Answer: Willie Dixon

"Little Red Rooster" has been covered by many people as have many of Willie Dixon's other songs. If you ever have five minutes to kill, just check how many of his numbers Led Zeppelin cover on their first two albums.
9. Chris Farlowe was a one hit wonder in 1966 with "Out of Time". Which songwriting team composed this one?

Answer: Mick Jagger and Keith Richard

Other than The Stones themselves, Chris Farlowe is, so far, the only act to top the UK charts with a Jagger/Richard composition.
10. Petula Clark reached the top spot in 1967 with "This is My Song". Which of these famous people wrote this hit?

Answer: Charlie Chaplin (silent movie star)

Charlie Chaplin did indeed write this song. "Downtown" probably Petula Clark's most famous song only reached number two.
Kennedy, Armstrong and Moore are all iconic figures of the sixties but, as far as I know, none of them ever wrote a number one.
