Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Annie Lennox teamed up with which respected legend for the duet "Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves"?

Answer: Aretha Franklin

The song was written by the Eurythmics (Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart) and had originally been intended as a rock duet with Tina Turner. When Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin stepped in, a feminist anthem was born!
2. Britney Spears was in vogue as Princess of Pop when she chose which Queen of Pop for her 2003 duet "Me Against the Music"?

Answer: Madonna

It was the first time that Madonna had featured on someone else's song rather than produce it herself. The song had a mixed reception, and the video was typically controversial, leading some media commentators to declare it as the symbolic handing over of the baton to the next generation.
3. By the millennium, these two groups were named as the best-selling female groups of all time, so it was only sporting that Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and Melanie C worked together on "Never Be the Same Again". Which two groups were they in?

Answer: TLC / Spice Girls

Based on worldwide album sales, by the start of the 21st century the Spice Girls were the biggest selling all-female group of all time, followed by TLC in second place. In 2000, this song gave Melanie C (Sporty Spice) her first UK number one after going solo. Lopes wrote and performed the rap verses.

The Spice Girls re-united a decade later, still holding on to the top spot, with TLC still claiming second place. TLC, however, were separated forever when in 2002 Lisa Lopes died in a car accident.
4. In 2009, Beyoncé Knowles featured on the song "Telephone" with which self confessed fame monster?

Answer: Lady Gaga

The success of the joint effort led to other divas such as Cher queuing up for a chance to work with Lady Gaga. "Telephone" was included on Lady Gaga's third album, "The Fame Monster", and was originally offered as a solo piece to Britney Spears, but if she wanted it she should have put a ring on it.
5. In the 2002 musical film "Chicago", two rival diva murderesses perform a show-stopping duet at the end. Reneé Zellweger plays Roxie Hart; who does Catherine Zeta-Jones play?

Answer: Velma Kelly

The duet is "Nowadays/Hot Honey Rag". Both Zeta-Jones and Zellweger did all their own singing for the film and were both nominated for Oscars, Baftas, and Golden Globes; with Zellweger winning a Golden Globe and Zeta Jones winning an Oscar and Bafta. It was the first musical to win the Oscar for Best Picture since "Oliver!" won it in 1969.
6. In 1998, "The Boy is Mine" was a worldwide hit and the best-selling single of the year in the US for which solo singers?

Answer: Brandy and Monica

Unfortunately these divas were not best of friends and made that very public, but that only encouraged sales; they also got a Grammy award. The pair had great success in their respective solo careers but never achieved the same heights alone. They put their differences behind them to collaborate again in 2012.
7. In 1979, Barbra Streisand scaled the heights of the Hot 100 with which Queen of Disco in "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)"?

Answer: Donna Summer

Although all four women are undeniable Disco Divas, Summer is often nicknamed the Disco Queen and continued to produce best selling dance music until her premature death in 2012. Gloria Gaynor provided the anthem "I Will Survive", Anita Ward sang disco classic "Ring My Bell", and Thelma Houston gave us "Don't Leave Me This Way".
8. Love it or loathe it, 1997's "Tell Him" met with mixed reviews but achieved high chart success for Barbra Streisand and which other titan of the ballads?

Answer: Céline Dion

Described by one critic as "something akin to a pair of drunks wrestling over the microphone on karaoke night", even the critics that gave it high praise admitted that it was a little overblown in places, but it was a big success with Dion and Streisand fans in Europe, as well as in the US non-contemporary charts.

This was Streisand's first female duet since "Enough is Enough" and was written especially for the pair to sing together.
9. "When You Believe" was the 1998 meeting of arguably the two most powerful voices of the time: Mariah Carey and who?

Answer: Whitney Houston

From the Dreamworks film "Prince of Egypt", with these two mega-divas chart domination should have been easy, but the song only found limited success, not quite reaching number one anywhere on the world's charts. Whilst deservedly beloved to many fans, it also received widespread accusations that it was boring. Maybe the divas cancelled each other out?
10. The concert album "'Live' at the London Palladium" recorded in 1964 was a whole spectrum of duets between which superstar family members?

Answer: Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli

Judy Garland is the original Queen of Diva Duets, specialising in them in her TV shows and recordings. Here, mother and daughter duet together on divatastic numbers such as "Don't Rain on my Parade" as well as performing signature solo turns. Judy Garland was 43 years old at the time, and therefore was producing some of her last recordings, she died aged just 47; Liza was a mere 18 in these concerts, a diva in the making, her greatest heights still to come.

Liza Minnelli is a recipient of the Grammy Legend Award, and Judy Garland was posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.
