Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sisters Alexia and Anissa Rodriguez sing and play bass respectively in a post-hardcore metalcore band formed in Tempe, Arizona in 2003. They have released six albums and two EPs, a DVD, and ten music videos. What is their name?

Answer: Eyes Set to Kill

Eyes Set to Kill has had a revolving lineup over the years, but the core has continuously consisted of singer Alexia Rodriguez (b. 1987), Anissa Rodriguez (b. 1989) and Caleb Clifton (b. 1987). Formed while the band members were still in high school, they experienced the greatest success in the late 2000s and early 2010s, playing Warped Tour, while screamo, melodic hardcore, and scene music were at their highest level of popularity. Changing landscapes in metal have led to a general decline in the success of these genres.
2. Formed in 2016, Victoria, BC quartet Spiritbox features vocals from Courtney Laplante, but prior to this she sang in a metalcore/mathcore band from Shreveport, Louisiana. What was their name?

Answer: iwrestledabearonce

Iwrestledabearonce played between 2007-2016 and broadly would fall under the mathcore and metalcore genres. Mathcore is characterized by its use of unusual time signatures and often multiple time signature changes throughout a song, while metalcore often uses drop or down tunings and features breakdowns, but also a lot of guitar harmonies. Thus, it borrows from both the hardcore and metal genres. As to her earlier gig in the music industry, Courtney (b. 1989) came in as a replacement for original vocalist Krysta Cameron in 2012 when Krysta left prior to touring.

More about Courtney: She was born in Maine but grew up in Alabama. After her stint in Louisiana-based iwrestledabearonce, she formed the band Spiritbox with her former bandmate and guitarist Mike Stringer in 2017. Spiritbox has met with unusual success for a metal band, being nominated for consecutive Grammys in 2024 and 2025. Courtney and Spiritbox guitarist Mike have been married since 2016.
3. Abigail Williams is a Phoenix-based metalcore band which was noted for its generous use of keyboards. What was the name of their keyboardist?

Answer: Ashley "Ellyllon" Jurgemeyer

Abigail Williams is a Phoenix-based band formed in 2004 which started out in the metalcore genre but increasingly leaned into darker themes and shifted to a black metal sound. Black metal is characterized by ethereal sounds, often achieved through keyboard and synthesizer effects, but also makes use of folk instruments such as the hurdy-gurdy. Ashley, or Ellyllon (b. 1984) recorded three albums with Abigail Williams after joining in 2005 though eventually left to take a job as Cradle of Filth's keyboard player.

The other answer choices are characters from Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible", which was centered around the Salem Witch Trials. Abigail Williams (the historical person) inspired the band name. Finally, the only consistent member for the more than 20 years of their existence has been Ken Sorceron; their most recent album (as of 2025) was released in 2019. It is unclear if Ellyllon continues to be a part of the music scene.
4. Laura Nichol is a singer (or screamer) for which melodic death metal band formed in San Francisco in 2002?

Answer: Light This City

Light This City gained recognition for a series of albums released in the early to mid-2000s, "The Hero Cycle" (2003), "Remains of the Gods" (2005), and "Facing the Thousand" (2006). The band formed while the members were still in high school and they were inspired by the melodeath sounds of Scandinavian metal pioneers At the Gates, In Flames, and British grindcore/melodic death metal band Carcass.

After a lengthy breakup from 2008, the band reunited to record new music in 2017 and has continued, though to a lesser degree in the years since.
5. Tatiana Shmayluk is the singer for the progressive metal band Jinjer. Which war-torn country do they call home?

Answer: Ukraine

Jinjer formed in 2008. After a surge in hostilities between Russia and Ukraine in 2022, the band left Ukraine and have raised awareness to the plight of Ukrainian people during the period of war. During their careers they have released five studio albums, including their album "Duél" in 2025.

Not much is known about the band, but although they are not a household name, they are well-known within the metal community. Tatiana, or "Tati", (b.1987) joined the band in 2009 and has come to be regarded as having one of the most powerful voices in extreme music.
6. Angela Gossow is a West German singer with which Swedish melodic death metal band?

Answer: Arch Enemy

Arch Enemy was formed in 1995 by former members of Carcass, Mercyful Fate, and Nevermore. During the course of their careers they have released 12 studio albums, and are regarded as one of the seminal bands within the melodic death metal genre and the Scandinavian music scene. Angela Gossow (b. 1974) recorded seven full-length albums with the band before resigning in 2014 to spend more time with her family.
7. Alissa White-Gluz is most well known for her time as the singer of Arch Enemy after replacing the previous singer in 2014. But another notable thing about her is that she was on a popular audition program in 2005. What is the name of that program? "Canadian _____"

Answer: Idol

Alissa White-Gluz (b. 1985) has risen to stardom through dogged persistence. Appearing on "Canadian Idol" as an unknown in 2005, she passed on through to the next round but was eliminated in the second stage of competition. She continued in her career and gained some recognition as singer for The Agonist.

Upon Angela Gossow's departure from Arch Enemy, Alissa was brought in on Angela's recommendation and secured the spot. Six studio albums in, and despite having some big shoes to fill, Alissa has been a magnificent replacement, and the band has continued in their footsteps of creating great melodic death metal music. Some additional facts: she is a vegan, an atheist and has been in a long-term relationship with Doyle from The Misfits.
8. Regarded as pioneers among women in metal, the Lander sisters from Ontario started which all-female metal group in 1996?

Answer: Kittie

Kittie is a nu-metal band from London, Ontario active since 1996. They have released seven studio albums. The Lander sisters, Morgan (b. 1982) and Mercedes (b. 1984) have been the only constant members of the band. The band went in hiatus in 2017 after the death of long-time bassist Trish Doan. Regrouping in 2022 the band has been welcomed by a generation of older millennials who formed their original fanbase. Kittie experienced great success in the early 2000s appearing on major tours such as Ozzfest 2000 and Ozzfest 2002.
9. Nita Strauss is a virtuoso guitarist who found fame in an Iron Maiden cover band called, fittingly enough, The Iron Maidens. She left the band after being picked to serve as touring guitarist for which Detroit rocker?

Answer: Alice Cooper

Nita Strauss (b. 1986) has established herself as one of the greatest guitarists in the metal scene today. In addition to her time as Alice Cooper's guitarist, she also has performed the same role with Demi Lovato, and has worked extensively as a studio musician in LA. She is endorsed by Ibanez Guitars and in 2018 was the first female guitarist to receive her own Ibanez Signature model guitar.

The other options are famous people from Detroit.
10. Cristina Scabbia is an Italian singer in the gothic metal genre who has achieved fame with which of these bands?

Answer: Lacuna Coil

Cristina Adriana Chiara Scabbia (b. 1972) aka Cristina Scabbia, is a Milanese singer active since 1991. She joined Lacuna Coil in 1996. They became popular in 2002 during a resurgence in metal music and with the release of their album Comalies, led by their lead-off single "Heaven's a Lie".

The band appeared on Fuse's "Uranium", MTV2's "Headbanger's Ball" and received high billing on tours such as Ozzfest and Music as a Weapon, Download Festival, Jaegermeister, and Wacken.
