Herbert Paul Brooks Junior was born on August 5th, 1937. He is best remembered for being the Head Olympic Coach for the USA team that won Olympic Gold in 1980 at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics. During the Games, the American team upset the heavily favored Soviet Union team 4-3 in the semi-finals in a game that has become known as the "Miracle on Ice." Herb Brooks coached for many years in the National Hockey League and also coached the French Hockey team at the 1998 Winter Olympics and the USA team once again at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games where they won the silver medal. Sadly, Herb was killed in an automobile accident in 2003. Schneider (Buzz), Johnson (Mark) and Eruzione (Mike) were the scorers for the USA team in the historic victory over the Soviet team in 1980.

She outlived four of her nine children, passing away on January 22nd, 1995 at the age of 104.

Herbert "Herb" Alpert was born on March 31st, 1935 in Los Angeles, California. Originally he started as a musician and founded the group "Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass." TJB won six Grammy Awards and 15 of their albums won gold discs, 14 went platinum.

Incredibly, in 1966 Alpert recordings outsold the Beatles.In the same year the Guiness Book of Records recognized his band with the distinction of being the first to place five albums simultaneously in the Top 20 of the Billboard Top Album rankings. Later in his career, Alpert became a recording industry executive.

He and his business partner Jerry Moss founded A&M Records. Alpert's instrumental #1 hit was "Rise" in 1979, and his vocal #1 hit was "This Guy's in Love With You" in 1968.

Jalen Anthony Rose was born in Detroit Michigan on January 30th, 1973. In college he played for the University of Michigan and helped them to two consecutive Final Four appearances in 1992 and 1993. Teamed with Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson, he was dubbed one of the "Fab 5." Jalen Rose played a total of thirteen years in the NBA with six different teams: Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors, New York Knicks, and the Phoenix Suns.

His most notable success was playing alongside Reggie Miller when Indian made the NBA Finals in 2000. Jalen Rose was voted as the NBA's Most Improved Player for that season.

After his playing career, Jalen Rose became a successful sports commentator and analyst and in 2011 he opened the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy in his hometown.

Herbert Eugene "Herb" Caen was born in Sacramento, California on April 3rd, 1916. Herb first began writing for the "San Francisco Chronicle" in 1936. After the radio column was discontinued in 1938, Herb proposed a daily column about the city itself. His "It's News to Me" column first appeared on July 5th of 1938. With the exception of 3 years' service in the U.S. Air Force, and an eight year stint at the "San Francisco Examiner", Herb Caen's column appeared every day except Saturdays until 1991.

Herb was a household name throughout the San Francisco Bay area and was rewarded with a special Pulitzer Prize in April of 1996 for "extraordinary and continuing contribution as a voice and conscience of his city." Herb Caen was a brilliant writer and coined such original words as beatnik and Frisbeetarianism.

Herbert James "Herb" Elliott was one of the greatest middle distance runners of his era. In August 1958 he became the world record holder in the mile running a spectacular 3:54.5, beating the record of Derek Ibbotson by 2.7 seconds. Herb Elliott would go on to break 4 minutes in the mile a further 17 times. Two more world records would follow in the 1500m event.

In 1958 Herb ran 3.36.0 and then at the Rome Olympics he captured Gold by lowering his own world record to 3:35.6. In 2000 at the Sydney Olympics, Herb Elliott was honored as one of the final torch bearers at the Opening Ceremony.

In 1964 he received an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) from the Queen of England. Then in 2002, he received a further honor in the Queen's Birthday Honours List being appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC).

Herb Elliott continues to be one of the most beloved athletes in the history of Australian sport.

Herbert "Herb" Henry Hoover was born on the 18th of May, 1912 in Knoxville Tennessee. Herb was fascinated by machinery and aircraft and spent 22 years at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. In 1934 he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and was accepted into the Army Air Corps training program. A few years later, Herb took a position as an experimental test pilot with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics in Hampton, Virginia. He volunteered to fly the XC-35 in bad weather for research. Herb had an uncanny ability to safely land planes that had mechanical difficulties or equipment failure. Herb was a part of the Air Force-NACA transonic flight research program. He made his first NACA glide-familiarization flight in October of 1947, just one week after Chuck Yeager had become the first pilot to exceed the sound barrier in the AF XS-1. In December, Herb Hoover made the first rocket flight ever performed by a NACA civilian pilot reaching Mach 0.71.On March 10th, 1948 in a XS-1 plane, Herb achieved Mach 1.065 (703 miles per hour) to become the first civilian pilot and the second pilot ever to exceed the speed of sound. True to form, that flight also ended in a crash landing, but also true to form, Herb Hoover guided the plane to the ground with minimal damage. In 1949, he was awarded the Air Medal for meritorious achievement.

The show earned her Emmy Awards and Golden Globes for Best Actress. On July 25th, 1990, Roseanne performed "The Star Spangled Banner," at the Jack Murphy Stadium prior to a game between the San Diego Padres and Cincinnati Reds. She was horribly off-key and ended the National Anthem grabbing her crotch and spitting like a baseball player. Needless to say this offended many Americans including President H.W. Bush who called her performance "disgraceful."
