Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Snakes can be found in most parts in the world. Some are dangerous and some are harmless. Which of these snakes is not dangerous at all to humans?

Answer: Children's python

All snakes should be treated with caution, as it is sometimes difficult to tell which are poisonous and which are not.

The puff adder comes from Africa, the sidewinder is a rattlesnake that lives in America, and the asp is a very dangerous snake found in Europe and the Sahara Desert.

The Children's python is not named after children as you might think, but it is named after a British scientist named George Children. It is a small snake, only found in the Australian desert, and is only dangerous to lizards and other small animals.
2. Snails are very adaptable, and live everywhere from deserts to jungles. They can even live underwater in oceans and rivers. Where are the biggest land snails found?

Answer: Africa

The largest snail is the Giant African Land Snail, also known as the Giant Ghana Snail, and it can grow up to 30cm (12 inches) long. Sea snails can grow a lot bigger, though, with one species from Australia growing to over a metre long. Scary!
3. Puppy dogs come in all shapes and sizes, but which of these would probably have the longest tail?

Answer: Greg, the Great Dane

The Great Dane is a very big dog, which can have a tail up to 50 cm long. That is longer than a Pomeranian and a Chihuahua put together. There are several types of poodle, but none of them have long tails.
4. Snakes feature in several books. What was the name of the large serpent in 'The Jungle Book'?

Answer: Kaa

Sir Hiss was an evil snake in the Disney version of 'Robin Hood', the movie, in which Robin Hood was a fox, Little John was a bear and Friar Tuck was a badger. Nagini was a large snake belonging to Voldemort, in the 'Harry Potter' series, and Squirmy was my daughter's pet duck.
5. Snails are used as food in several countries. One of the most famous snail dishes comes from France. What is the dish called?

Answer: Escargot

Only certain types of snails are suitable, so please do NOT grab a handful of snails from your garden and eat them.

Cuisses de grenouille is another French dish, made from frog's legs. Truffles are a very expensive fungus, and parfait is a yummy dessert with ice cream, cream and fruit, served in a tall glass.
6. Which African dog breed is the only one that does not bark?

Answer: Basenji

Instead of barking, they make a sound like a cross between a baby crying and a fire engine! The Rhodesian Ridgeback used to be called the Rhodesian Lion Dog, because it was strong enough to fight a lion. A peewee is a small black-and-white Australian bird, and there is no such thing as an Ethiopian Terrier.
7. Do snakes have noses?

Answer: Yes

They have a nose and nostrils, and they are used for breathing, just like humans do. However, their tongue, with the fork in the end, is much more sensitive to smells.
8. What is the first part of a snail's life?

Answer: An egg

As you can imagine, snail eggs are tiny. The adult snail lays many eggs and buries them under a thin layer of soil. When it hatches, it eats its own shell!

Did you know that you can tell the age of a snail by counting the rings on its shell, and that the average life span is about 15 years?
9. Why do dogs pant?

Answer: To lose heat

If a dog has been running and playing, he will get sweaty, just like us humans. The problem is that dogs are covered with fur, and have no sweat glands like we do, so all the slobber you see coming from their mouth is actually sweat.
10. According to the nursery rhyme, little boys are made of snakes, snails and puppy dog tails. What are little girls made of?

Answer: Sugar and spice and all things nice

The nursery rhyme was first published in the early 1800s. In those days, spices had to be imported from the East Indies to Europe, and was therefore very expensive.
