Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the British aristocrat whose disappearance sparked endless rumors and intrigue?

Answer: Lord Lucan

Lord Lucan, who was born Richard John Bingham, was a British aristocrat, the 7th Earl of Lucan, who was known for his gambling lifestyle. On November 7th, 1994, Sandra Rivett, the nanny of his children, was murdered in the Lucan family home. His estranged wife, Veronica (Lady Lucan) claimed that he also attacked her and accused him of the crime.

Leaving behind letters protesting his innocence and blaming it on an intruder, Lucan fled the scene and was never seen again. One theory is that he jumped off a ferry into the English Channel, ending his life. Another theory is that he escaped abroad, and began a new life under an assumed identity. Various sightings of him have been reported in India, New Zealand, and South Africa. However, his disappearance remains unsolved. He was declared legally dead in 1999.
2. What was the name of the wealthy heir who mysteriously vanished during an expedition in New Guinea in the 1960s?

Answer: Michael Rockefeller

On November 19th, 1961, during an expedition in the Asmat region of Dutch New Guinea (which is now Indonesia), 23-year-old Michael Rockefeller, the son of New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller, disappeared. He was an art enthusiast, passionate about collecting indigenous art and was exploring the culture of the Asmat people on his visit.

When traveling along the coast, his boat capsised. He attempted to swim to the shore, but was never seen again. One theory is that he drowned, and another theory is that he was killed and eaten by the Asmat people who, at the time, were practising ritualistic cannibalism. It is also thought that he may have survived and chose to live in seclusion among the Asmat people. He was declared legally dead in 1964.
3. Ylena Carissi, who vanished while traveling through Europe in the 1970s, was the granddaughter of which Hollywood actor?

Answer: Tyrone Power

Ylena Carissi, born in 1970, was the eldest daughter of the Italian singers Romina Power and Albano Carrisi, who performed together as a duo. She was also the granddaughter of Hollywood actor Tyrone Power and Mexican Actress Linda Christen. On January 6th, 1994, Ylena vanished while visiting New Orleans, Louisiana. The last time she was seen was in the French Quarter where she was staying with a street musician at a hotel.

A security guard said he had seen a woman matching her description jump into the Mississippi River, saying, 'I belong in water'. However, this was not confirmed. Her belongings were found in her hotel room. Despite alleged sightings and numerous theories, she was never found, and, at her father's request, was declared legally dead in 2014.
4. What was the name of the estate agent who disappeared in 1986 after a meeting with a client known only as Mr. Kipper?

Answer: Suzy Lamplugh

On July 28th, 1986, 25-year-old estate agent Suzy Lamplugh, who worked in Fulham, London, went to meet a client who was recorded in her diary as Mr Kipper to show him a house on Shorrolds Road. Shortly after being seen by witnesses near the property with a man, she vanished.

Her car with her belongings inside was later found abandoned. It is believed that Suzy was murdered by Mr Kipper, whose real name was John Cannan, a convicted criminal associated with other violent crimes. He denied involvement with the case, and police had insufficient evidence to charge him with the crime. She was declared legally dead in 1993.
5. What was the name of the theoretical physicist who vanished in 1938 after buying a ticket for a boat trip to Naples?

Answer: Ettore Majorana

Born on August 5th, 1906, in Catania, Sicily, Ettore Majorana was an Italian theoretical physicist who possessed a brilliant mind. He was part of Enrico Fermi's famous group of physicists, 'The Via Panisperna Boys'. Majorana made significant contributions to theoretical physics. After purchasing a ticket for a ship journey from Naples to Palermo, he vanished on March 25th, 1938, never to be seen again.

Some believe that he may have taken his own life because of mental health struggles and his reclusiveness. Other theories are that he might have been kidnapped or murdered because of his knowledge of sensitive scientific information. It was also believed that he was alive and living in Venezuela, choosing to escape the pressures of his work.

The case was reopened in 2011 by the Rome Attorney's Office, and its findings suggested he had likely lived in Venezuela, under the surname Bini, between 1955 and 1959. The case was officially closed in February 2015. However, the truth about what really happened to him remains.
6. Who was the 26-year-old actress and dancer who vanished in Los Angeles, California, in 1949?

Answer: Jean Spangler

In Los Angeles, California, on October 7th, 1949, 26-year-old actress and dancer Jean Spangler disappeared. She was an aspiring starlet who had appeared in small roles in films, one being 'Young Man With a Horn'. She was also a single mother. On the evening she vanished, she told her sister-in-law she was going to meet her ex-husband to discuss child support and then head off to shoot a film. She was last seen at a grocery store near her home.

Two days later, her purse was found with a torn strap and a cryptic note saying, 'Kirk, Can't wait any longer, Going to see Dr. Scott'. This caused speculation that she was connected to actor Kirk Douglas, who denied involvement. Because of the note mentioning the doctor, one theory is that she died during an illegal abortion. Another theory is that she was murdered by someone who knew her or due to her links with organised crime.
7. Who was the twenty-month-old boy who disappeared from the Greek island of Kos in 1990?

Answer: Ben Needham

On July 24th, 1991, Ben Needham, who was 20 months old, disappeared from the Greek island of Kos. He was living with his family, who had moved from England to live in Greece, where they were renovating a farmhouse belonging to his grandparents. On the day he went missing, Ben had been playing near the farmhouse while his grandparents were working. At around 2:30 pm, it became known that he was missing.

Despite intensive searches by the Greek and British authorities, no trace of Ben has ever been found. One theory is that he was accidentally killed by a digger driver who was working nearby, but extensive searches of the rubble didn't recover his remains. Other theories are that he might have wandered off or that he had been abducted. His fate remains unknown.
8. What was the name of the photojournalist and son of a famous actor who disappeared in Cambodia during the Vietnam War in 1970?

Answer: Sean Flynn

Sean Flynn was the son of Hollywood legend Errol Flynn. He, too, became an actor, but gave it up in favour of a career in journalism, becoming a freelance journalist and war correspondent. On April 6th, 1970, Sean and fellow photojournalist Dana Stone vanished while covering the Vietnam War. They were last seen riding motorcycles into Communist-held territory in Cambodia.

Two theories exist, one being that they were captured by the Khmer Rouge and possibly executed. The other theory is that they survived and chose to live in hiding to escape the trauma of war. No trace of them has ever been found. Flynn was declared legally dead in 1984.
9. What was the name of the musician and lyricist for the Manic Street Preachers who vanished in 1995 under mysterious circumstances?

Answer: Richey Edwards

On February 1st, 1995, Richey Edwards, aka, Richey James, rhythm guitarist and lyricist for the Welsh band The Manic Street Preachers, vanished just before the band was set to embark on a tour of the U.S. Later, his car was found abandoned near the Severn Bridge, which is known to be associated with suicides.

However, no evidence of his fate was ever found. Theories regarding his disappearance include suicide, as he struggled with his mental health, or perhaps he staged his disappearance to escape the pressures of fame. Finally, some think he is still alive and has started a new life, as there have been alleged sightings of him in India, Goa, and The Channel Islands. Nevertheless, he was declared legally dead in 2008.
10. What was the name of the 13-year-old schoolgirl from Norfolk, England, who vanished in 1969?

Answer: April Fabb

April Fabb was a 13-year-old schoolgirl from Norfolk, England, when she disappeared on April 8th, 1969. On the day she vanished, she left her home on her bicycle at around 1:40 pm to deliver a birthday present to her brother-in-law. She was last seen cycling along a country road at approximately 2:00 pm. Her blue and white bicycle was later found abandoned in a field near Metton, however, no trace of her has ever been found.

It is thought that she may have been abducted by a passing motorist or was the victim of an opportunistic crime. Because of similarities with her disappearance, one suspect was serial killer Robert Black, but no conclusive evidence links him to her disappearance.
