Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Baseball pitcher; sports personality; won 30 games in one season (1934)

Answer: Dizzy Dean

"Dizzy" Dean was born in Arkansas (USA) in January of 1910. During the 1930s and 1940s he was one of baseball's most loved players/sports broadcasters - often as much for his personality as his athletic ability. He played the most years of his professional career with the St. Louis Cardinals. So endearing was his time there that he was inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame. Dean was elected into the (major league) Baseball Hall of Fame in 1953.
2. Actress, singer, known for bubbly personality; movies included "Calamity Jane" (1953)

Answer: Doris Day

As a young woman Doris Day had dreams of being a professional dancer. She was good enough to be considered for that career until a serious car accident (when she was 15 years old) injured her right leg so severely that those dreams/intentions were not meant to be.

It was then she concentrated on her singing and, as is often said, "the rest is history". Her remarkable career as a singer and actress was not without it troubles though. Unfortunately, she entrusted her earnings unwisely and it would take her many years to recover from that loss.

In her later years she was passionately involved in animal welfare, gaining her respect and admiration beyond that of her movie star status.
3. Actress, gospel singer, inspirational speaker; "Elly May Clampett" on TV's "The Beverly Hillbillies"

Answer: Donna Douglas

The beautiful, blonde Donna Douglas had already been named Miss Baton Rouge and Miss New Orleans (in beauty contests) before she bested more than 500 aspiring actresses to earn the role of "Elly May Clampett" on the very popular TV show "The Beverly Hillbilles" (1962-1971).

The combination of the popularity of the show and the uniqueness of the role made it very difficult for Douglas to overcome the constant typecasting (as "Elly May") once the series ended. For a while she ventured into real estate sales, mainly in her native state of Louisiana (USA). Also, her faith as a devout Christian lead her to use her fame, talents and initiative to explore gospel singing, inspirational speaking and writing faith-based books for both children and adults.
4. Actor; comedian extraordinaire with a passion and talent for cooking

Answer: Dom DeLuise

Dom DeLuise recognized very early in his career that he could get a lot of attention (and, thus work!) and make a lot of friends by playing the "second banana". After more than a full decade of work on Broadway (in various plays and other theater productions), DeLuise found work in both films and television during the 1970s. Variety shows were extremely popular then and DeLuise was perfect as the "side-kick" and/or foil of the host's shenanigans. Yet, Dom DeLuise was a gifted comedian in his own right and was respected as such. Director, Mel Brooks, featured DeLuise in several of his films. Beginning in the 1980s DeLuise continued to morph his skills as he loaned his talent to voice-over work for movies; for example, "An American Tail" (1986) and "All Dogs Go To Heaven" (1989).
5. Played Louie DePalma on TV's "Taxi" (1978 - 1983); starred in "Get Shorty" (1995)

Answer: Danny DeVito

Danny DeVito was born in New Jersey (USA) in November of 1944. His stature may have been "short" but there was no shortage of talent in the guy who was less than five feet tall. (His height is most often shown as 4' 10" or 1.47 metres.) In addition to the examples shown in the question DeVito had much success on stage, film and television.

His talent went beyond acting to include that of producer and director. In 1992 DeVito formed Jersey Films with his then-wife and fellow actor, Rhea Perlman. That company produced such films as "Pulp Fiction" (1994) and "Erin Brockovich" (2000). DeVito returned to TV in 2005 when he was cast as "Frank Reynolds" in the American sitcom, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia".
6. First actor to win three Academy Awards for "Best Lead Actor"; married the daughter of playwright, Arthur Miller, in 1996

Answer: Daniel Day-Lewis

Daniel Day-Lewis won the Academy Award for "Best Lead Actor" for his work in "My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown" (1989), "There Will Be Blood" (2007) and "Lincoln" (2012) which made him the first actor to have that honor three times. During his work on the film adaptation of Arthur Miller's play, "The Crucible" in 1996, Day-Lewis was given the opportunity to visit the playwright's home; it was there he met his future wife, Rebecca Miller. Known to be extremely protective of his personal life, Day-Lewis moved from England to the United States seeking more control over his privacy.

He continued to support various philanthropic endeavors - particularly those of the fine arts - in his native England.
7. Heavy metal guitarist; as a member of the group, Pantera; wrote the fight song for the NHL Dallas Stars titled "Puck Off"

Answer: Dimebag Darrell

Darrell Lance Albert was born in east Texas in August of 1966. His father who had worked as a country music producer encouraged Darrell and his older brother, Vinnie Paul, to develop their musical talents. Darrell was playing guitar by the time he was twelve years old; his brother Paul, was a drummer.

As his music career kindled, Darrell and his brother formed the heavy metal band Pantera in the early 1980s. It was during this time period Dimebag Darrell was first regarded as one of the best heavy metal guitarists - ever. During a concert in 2004 a mentally ill fan was able to breech security and fatally shoot Darrell while he was on stage.

His influence on other heavy metal guitarists would last for years.
8. One half of British TV hosts/presenters; pop musician with hits "Let's Get Ready to Rhumble" (1994)

Answer: Dec Donnelly

When the young man who would become "Dec" Donnelly answered an ad in a local newspaper to audition for the British TV show, "Byker Grove" he earned the role to be cast as "Duncan" in that series. In addition to establishing his career as an actor it was then/there he met fellow actor, Anthony McPartlin, who became a friend and business partner.

As "Ant & Dec" the two gained fame hosting shows and appearing on TV as a presenting duo. As a pair, the two starred in the British comedy film "Alien Autopsy" in 2006. Both men have been recognized and appreciated for their philanthropic endeavors; for example, they have supported the program, W4 Youth, in London, England.
9. American model, TV and film actor; work included "The Staircase" (2022)

Answer: Dane DeHaan

Dane William DeHaan was born in Pennsylvania (U.S.A.) in 1986. He had already begun to appear in community (local) theater before he was in his teens. His talent for the fine arts would be further honed when he earned a coveted admission to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Soon after he graduated from that school he was worked as an understudy for Haley Joel Osment in Broadway's "American Buffalo" and he begun his career in television with a guest appearance on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit". DeHaan met his future wife, Anna Wood, while they were both studying in North Carolina.
10. British professional boxer; WBA Heavyweight Champion

Answer: Daniel Dubois

It is believed that Daniel Dubois' father took him to a boxing gym before the son was ten years old. The elder Dubois was convinced it would be an avenue that would "keep his boy out of trouble". It may have been, too, that Daniel's father recognized the combination of talent, desire and physique necessary to be a professional athlete. Daniel Dubois won his first professional fight with Knock-out - less than one minute into the first round - before he was twenty (20) years old.

He would rise through the ranks of boxing with twelve (12) wins by mid-2019.

In 2022, he defeated reigning Heavyweight Champion, Trevor Bryan, to become recognized as the WBA (Regular) Heavyweight Champion.
