Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which woman in the Bible ate the forbidden fruit, and was the first sinner?

Answer: Eve

Eve's story is told from Genesis 1:1-31 to Genesis 3:8-24.
Eve was the first woman, wife of Adam, and mother of Cain and Abel. God told her not to eat the forbidden fruit from a certain tree. Satan took the form of a snake to tempt her into eating the fruit and he succeeded. She ate some of the fruit and offered some to Adam. Therefore God banished them from the Garden of Eden and the first sin was committed.
Her name means "woman" or "life-bearer".
2. Sarah was Abraham's wife and Isaac's mother, but Sarah was not her first name. What was Sarah's original name?

Answer: Sarai

Sarah's story can be found from Genesis 11:29 to Genesis 22, 23:1-2.
God changed her name to Sarah. The name "Sarai" means "lady" and the name "Sarah" means "princess".
Sarah thought that she couldn't have children, so she gave her handmaiden to Abraham (a common practice in those times) whose child by Abraham was called Ishmael. Luckily, in her old age, God blessed her with a son named Isaac.
3. Which woman in the Bible had twins by her father-in-law and fought to claim what was hers?

Answer: Tamar

Tamar's story can be found from Genesis 38:1-11 to Genesis 38:27-30.
Tamar was married to Er, but then he died leaving her a childless widow. The Levirate Law in that time said that if a man died childless, it was his brother's duty to marry his widow so they could have children. Judah, her father-in-law, let her marry his next son, but he too died without children. Judah thought that Tamar was bad luck, so he sent her away without what she wanted: a child.
Tamar tricked Judah by dressing up as a prostitute, and soon she had twins by him.
Her name means "date palm".
4. Rebecca, wife of Isaac, helped one of her sons to get the birthright from Isaac. Which one of her sons did she help?

Answer: Jacob

Rebecca's story can be found in Genesis 24 to Genesis 27.
Rebecca had twin sons, Esau and Jacob. Esau was in line for the birthright, but Rebecca thought that Jacob would do a better job so she helped him trick his father into giving him the birthright.
Rebecca was chosen as Isaac's wife, because Abraham (Isaac's father) sent someone to go look for a wife for his son. When Rebecca and her family were willing to help the man, she was chosen as Isaac's wife because when the man came to a spot to rest with his camels, Rebecca offered to help them, and that was the sign from God that the man needed to choose Isaac's wife.
Her name means "a heifer".
5. Where did Jacob meet Rachel when he fell in love with her?

Answer: the well

Rachel's story can be found from Genesis 29:1-14 to Genesis 35:16-30.
The story of Rachel and Jacob is a love story, but also a sad one. Jacob met Rachel at the well and helped her and they fell in love. He agreed to work seven years for Rachel's father, Laban, if he could marry Rachel. At the time of the wedding, Laban tricked Jacob into marrying his older daughter, Leah, because according to culture Leah had to marry before Rachel.
Later on Jacob got to marry Rachel too. She only had two sons - Joseph and Benjamin - and, sadly, she died in childbirth with Benjamin.
Her name means "ewe".
6. Whose wife accused Joseph of trying to rape her, thus getting him landed in prison?

Answer: Potiphar's wife

Potiphar's wife's story can be found from Genesis 39:7-12 to Genesis 39:13-20.
Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers, and became a slave in Potiphar's home. Potiphar was a powerful man in Egypt. One day, Potiphar's wife asked Joseph to lie with her, and he said no, to show his loyalty to Potiphar. She grabbed his clothes and he ran away from her. Later she told her husband that Joseph had tried to rape her and Potiphar threw Joseph into prison.
Some may say that Potiphar's wife may be the bad guy in this story, but think about. Men of the time could easily get away with this crime and there is no record that her husband ever paid much attention to her.
Sadly, her name has been lost in history.
7. In the Bible, Sarah gave her handmaiden to Abraham in hopes that they would conceive a son which she could adopt. Where was Sarah's handmaiden from and what was her name?

Answer: Egypt, Hagar

Hagar's story can be found from Genesis 16:1-16 to Genesis 21:1-21.
Hagar was Sarah's slave, probably given to her in the dowry or as a gift. In those days, if a woman couldn't have any children, she could give her slave to her husband, and any children the slave had would be the woman's adopted children.
Sarah couldn't have any children, so she gave Hagar to Abraham in hopes that Hagar would conceive a child. Hagar did and the child was named Ishmael. After that, it seems that Hagar and Sarah only tolerated each other; it also appears that Sarah was jealous that Hagar had a son and she didn't. When Isaac was born, Abraham sent Hagar and Ishmael away. They almost died of thirst, but when she prayed to God, they found a well.
Hagar means "stranger".
8. When Miriam, Moses' sister, questioned Moses' authority what disease did she get?

Answer: leprosy

Miriam's story can be found from Exodus 2:1-10 to Numbers 20:1-2.
Miriam was Moses' elder sister. When Moses' mother put him in a basket on the river, Miriam watched Moses until the Egyptian princess found him.
Miriam was a leader, and when Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, she was a leader of the women.
After Moses and the Israelites crossed across the Red Sea safely, Miriam began to sing the Song of Miriam with all the other women. They sang and played instruments.
Later Miriam and Aaron (Moses' older brother) questioned Moses' authority. God sent them a sign that Moses was the chosen one, and Miriam was stricken with leprosy. Later on Moses prayed to God to heal Miriam and He did. She died later on in the journey.
Miriam means "prophetess" or "lady".
9. Who was the only female judge of Israel mentioned in the Book of Judges?

Answer: Deborah

Deborah's story can be found from Judges 4:1-11 to Judges 5:19-23.
Deborah was the only female judge (tribal leader) of Israel. The Canaanites were raiding the Israelites so they looked to Deborah for help. King Jabin of Canaan was planning to take them over with his army. She spoke with Barak, a military general. She told him to go into battle against Sisera. Sisera was one of Jabin's most feared generals. Barak was hesitant to go, as they would surely lose. The Israelite army was lacking in both number and strength. During the battle, it rained. The mud stopped the Canaanites' chariots from moving. Sisera fled, but he was still alive. And that is where Jael comes in...
Deborah means "bee" or "spirited or fiery woman".
10. How did Jael kill Sisera?

Answer: she drove a tent peg through his head

Jael's story can be found from Judges 4:17-24 to Judges 5:24-27.
Jael was a Kenite women, but she was loyal to the Israelites. Because of her husband, she was also friendly with the Canaanites.
After Sisera fled, he went to Jael's tent for protection. There, she gave him some goat's milk, which put him to sleep. While he was sleeping, she drove a tent peg through his skull and killed him (which must have taken some guts).
Jael means "wild gazelle" or "wild goat".
