Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hannah was married to Elkanah.

Answer: True

Yes, Elkanah was the name of Hannah's husband, as per 1 Samuel 1:1-2. Scripture states he was from Ramathaim and was a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim. His father was Jeroham and his grandfather was Elihu. According to the Web site Christiananswers.net, Elkanah means 'God created'.

Another Old Testament character was also called Elkanah. He was the son of Korah, as per Exodus 6:24.
2. Another woman called Peninnah was also married to Hannah's husband.

Answer: True

Elkanah had two wives. In addition to Hannah, he was also married to Peninnah. According to 1 Samuel 1:2, Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none. The Web site Christiananswers.com states Peninnah means 'coral'.
3. Hannah and the second woman who was also married to her husband were the best of friends.

Answer: False

It appears nothing could be further from the truth. Reading between the lines, it appears Hannah despised Peninnah and it appears Peninnah took delight in making Hannah miserable.

Hannah was unable to conceive while Peninnah had given birth to an undisclosed number of children.

1 Samuel 1:6-7, in the NIV Bible, states: "Because the LORD had closed Hannah's womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her. This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat."
4. Hannah prayed so fervently to the LORD for a son that Eli, the high priest who also doubled as judge of Israel, thought she was drunk.

Answer: True

Yes, it's true.

1 Samuel 1:12-18, in the NKJV Bible, tells of the occasion: "And it happened, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli watched her mouth. Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk. So Eli said to her, 'How long will you be drunk? Put your wine away from you!'
But Hannah answered and said, 'No, my lord, I am a woman of sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor intoxicating drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD. Do not consider your maidservant a wicked woman, for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief I have spoken until now.'
Then Eli answered and said, 'Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him.'
And she said, 'Let your maidservant find favor in your sight.' So the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad."
5. When Hannah prayed to give birth to a boy she vowed to the LORD no razor would ever touch his head and he would be "given to the LORD all the days of his life."

Answer: True

True. 1 Samuel 1:9-11, in the NIV Bible, gives this account: "Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the LORD's house. In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the LORD, weeping bitterly. And she made a vow, saying, 'LORD Almighty, if you will only look on your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.'"
6. Samuel was Hannah's only child.

Answer: False

I suspect a substantial number of quiz players opted to choose 'true' on this one. However, according to Scripture she gave birth to five children. 1 Samuel 2:21, in the NIV Bible, states: "And the LORD was gracious to Hannah; she gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD."
7. According to 1 Samuel 2:11, Hannah's son Samuel served under Abiathar the high priest.

Answer: False

False. According to Scripture, Samuel served under Eli the high priest.

According to the Web site Christiananswers.com, Abiathar was the tenth high priest, and the fourth in descent from Eli. Incidentally, Abiathar was the only high priest who was removed from his position. According to Scripture, Abiathar was removed from his position by Solomon and banished to his home at Anathoth because he took part in the attempt to raise Adonijah to the throne (1 Kings 2:26-27).
8. Hannah made the following statement in a prayer in 1 Samuel 2:6-8 in the NKJV Bible: "The LORD kills and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and brings up. The LORD makes poor and makes rich; He brings low and lifts up. He raises the poor from the dust And lifts the beggar from the ash heap, To set them among princes And make them inherit the throne of glory."

Answer: True

True. The words were spoken by Hannah in a portion of Scripture known as Hannah's Prayer. The prayer runs from 1 Samuel 2:1-10. From this point on, there is no further mention of Hannah in Scripture.
9. The name Hannah is the only Biblical name that is a palindrome in English. In other words, it is the only Biblical name that can be spelled the same forwards and backwards.

Answer: False

Actually, there are a number of different names in the Bible that are palindromes. Some examples are Eve, Anna, Ada, Asa and Gog. Feel free to play another quiz I have posted at FunTrivia. It's called 'Biblical Names that are Palindromes'.
10. Hannah is lauded in the 11th chapter of Hebrews for her faith.

Answer: False

False. Hannah's name is not mentioned in the New Testament. In fact, her name appears in only the first and second chapters of 1 Samuel. On top of this, no other woman in the Bible shares the name Hannah. According to the Web site Christiananswers.net, Hannah means 'favor, grace'.
