Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Eve was the first woman, but according to Genesis 3:20 (KJV), why was she called Eve?

Answer: She was the mother of all living things

Eve was Adam's wife and was formed from one of his rib bones. At first, in Genesis 2:23, Adam called her "Woman, because she was taken out of Man." It wasn't until the next chapter, after the Fall of Man story when he named her Eve. Eve had at least three sons: Cain, Abel, and Seth.
2. Noah's wife's name was Sarah.

Answer: False

Noah's wife is not given a name. Sarah is the name of Abraham's first wife. Both stories can be found in Genesis. Noah's story is found in chapters 6-9, and Abraham's story can be found in chapters 12-25. Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth (Genesis 5:32 KJV). The sons all had wives, also unnamed.
3. Who did Abraham father Ishmael with?

Answer: Hagar

Abraham and Sarah were old and had no children. God said in Genesis 15:4 (KJV), "This shall not be thine heir, but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir." But since Sarah was old and barren, she suggested to Abraham in chapter 16 to have a child with Hagar, Sarah's handmaiden.

When Hagar becomes pregnant, however, Sarah despises her, and Hagar runs away. The angel of the Lord appears to Hagar and tells her to return to Sarah and Abraham.
4. Whose wife falsely accused Joseph, son of Jacob, in Genesis 39?

Answer: Potiphar

Every day, Potiphar's wife tried to get Joseph to sleep with her, and he constantly refused. One day, no one else was around; she grabbed him by his garment, and he ran, but the garment stayed behind as she still had a grip on it. She then tells the men who are usually in the house in verse 14 of chapter 39, "See, he hath brought a Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice."

Consequently, Potiphar threw Joseph into jail.
5. Moses' sister was Miriam, but do you recall who Exodus 6:20 said their mother (and also Aaron's mother) was?

Answer: Jochebed

Jochebed was married to Amram. When Moses was born, Jochebed hid him for three months and then put him in a basket in the Nile River (Exodus chapter 2). Pharaoh's daughter saw the baby and drew him out of the water. Miriam had been watching and kindly offered to have her mother raise the child until it was fully weaned. Pharaoh's daughter accepted and Jochebed could keep Moses a little longer.
6. What was the name of the woman in Joshua 2 who helped the spies of the Children of Israel escape?

Answer: Rahab

Rahab was a prostitute in Jericho. In chapter two of Joshua, She told the spies that if they spared her and her family, she would help them, and she did. They spared her, and she is mentioned in Hebrews 11, often known as the Hall of Faith. Hebrews 11:31 (KJV) says, "By faith, the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not when she had received the spies with peace."
7. How did Delilah get Samson to tell the secret of where his strength came from?

Answer: Guilt

In Judges 16, Delilah asks where he gets his strength. In verse 7 (KJV), the first time, he answers, "If they bind me with seven green with that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man." The Philistine men do what he said, and Samson broke the thread with no problem.

The second time she asks, Samson answers in verse 11, "If they bind me fast with new ropes that never were occupied, then shall I be weak and be as another man." Delilah ties him up with new ropes and tells the Philistines, but Samson breaks free again.

The third time, he tells her in verse 13, "If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web." She does as he says, and it says, in verse fourteen, that he left with the pin of the beam and the web.

Finally, in verse fifteen, Delilah says to him, "How canst thou say, I love these when thine heart is not with me? Thou hast mocked me these three times and hast not told me when thy great strength lieth."

Samson feels guilty and confesses the strength is in his hair, she cuts the hair off, and his strength is gone.
8. One of my favorite stories in the Bible, in Judges 4, who was the woman who put a tent stake in a man's head?

Answer: Jael

Sisera was the captain of the Jabin's (the king of Canaan) army. At the time, Deborah was the judge in Israel. She was also a prophetess. She told Barak to go and deal with him, but Barak wouldn't go unless she went and then told him in Judges 4:14 (KJV): "Up; for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thing hand; is not the LORD gone out before thee?"

Barak and ten thousand men went with him. And they destroyed the army, but Sisera managed to get away. Sisera went to the tent of Heber the Kenite, who was Jael's husband. Jael gave him milk and let him sleep in the tent while she stood guard. Then it says in Judges 4:21 (KJV), "Then Jael Heber's wife took a nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died."
9. People may know that Ruth married Boaz and became the great-grandparents of King David. But who was Ruth's son?

Answer: Obed

According to Ruth 4:17, the women were neighbors of Naomi, Ruth's mother-in-law, who named him Obed. Ruth was married to one of Naomi's sons, who died during the famine. She was a Moabite, and Boaz said he would be the kinsman redeemer, but another man was closer.

At the beginning of Ruth chapter four, Boaz discusses the matter with the other kinsman redeemer. First, he tells the other man (who is unnamed) about the land, and the man is ready to claim it. Then Boaz fills the man in about Ruth, and the man loses interest since she is a foreign woman.

He took off his shoe to say it's all yours. And so Boaz married Ruth, and the line from which David was born came from them.
10. In 1 Samuel, Hannah is in the temple praying. Why did Eli, the priest, accuse her of being drunk?

Answer: Her lips were moving as she prayed silently

In the first chapter of first Samuel, Elkanah has two wives, Hannah, who is barren, and Peninnah, who was able to have children. Hannah feels horrible and wants a child. So, when she and her husband are at the temple, she desperately prays in 1 Samuel 1:11 (KJV), "O Lord of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give until thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him until the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head."

Eli sees her lips moving but doesn't hear her and concludes she had too much wine to drink. When he accuses her, she explains in verse 15, "I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink," and explains she was praying in desperation. Eli tells her God will grant her request. The baby is born and named Samuel. It says in verse 20 that she called him Samuel "Because I have asked him of the LORD."
11. In 1 Samuel 28, King Saul consults a woman who is a diviner (much like a psychic today). Where is she from?

Answer: Endor

Samuel died, and King Saul banned the people who were witches and wizards from his kingdom. However, the Philistines scare him, and he doesn't know what to do, so he breaks his law about seeing the people who see the future and goes to Endor to talk to one. He also disguises himself when he goes to consult her

He asks the woman to conjure up Samuel, and the woman realizes it's Saul. Samuel appears and asks why Saul is bothering him, and Saul explains he's worried about the Philistines.
12. Who did David marry after her first husband, Nabal, died?

Answer: Abigail

In 1 Samuel 25, when David is hiding out from King Saul, David's men ask Nabal for some provisions, but Nabal refuses. David gathered up his men to find Nabal but was interceded by Abigail. She brought supplies to David and explained that Nabal was a fool, and David accepted and blessed her. However, verse 37 of the KJV (regarding Nabal) says, "his heart died within him, and he became as a stone."

David found out that Nabal died and was happy because that freed up Abigail, and in verse 42, they are married.
13. How was Jezebel killed?

Answer: Thrown out a window

In 2 Kings 9, Jezebel looked out a window when Jehu saw her. He tells the eunuchs with her to throw her out the window, and so they do. After, Jeru says to bury her because she is the king's daughter. However, verse 35 says they couldn't find her when they went to do so because the dogs had eaten her, leaving only a skull, feet, and the palms of her hands.
14. Who did Mordecai ask, "and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"

Answer: Esther

Esther and Mordecai, and the other Jews were under Persian rule. King Xerxes chose Esther to replace Queen Vashti and Esther 2:17, "and the king loved Esther above all the other women." (KJV). In chapter three, Mordecai refuses to bow to Haman, a high government official. Haman decided to wipe out the Jews in response to Mordecai's refusal to bow.

So when the king chose Esther, Mordecai thought she might be the answer to the problem the Jews faced in Haman. And he was right; when the king discovered what Haman had plotted to do, he and his sons were killed on the gallows they built to kill Mordecai. The Jews were also allowed to defend themselves.
15. Who was the wife of Hosea?

Answer: Gomer

Gomer was a "whore" according to Hosea chapter one. God told Hosea to marry her because, per Hosea 1:1, "for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the LORD." The couple had a son after they were married, named Jezreel (Hosea 1:4 KJV: "I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel"). Then they had a daughter named Loruhamah (Hosea 1:6 "I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel, but I will utterly take them away"). Then they had another son named Loammi (Hosea 1:9 "for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God").

Some Biblical scholars say that Gomer represents Israel. God did not give up on Israel, just as Hosea did not give up on Gomer.
