2. What links the Jewish Hanukkah, the multi-faith Diwali and the French Christian tradition of the Fete des lumieres?

Answer: They are all festivals of lights

Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, is celebrated in late November or December. The celebrations commemorate the rededication of the altar of the Temple in Jerusalem following its desecration at the hands of the forces of the Seleucid Empire and the miracle of the oil when, despite only having enough olive oil to keep the temple's eternal flame lit for a day, the flame burned for eight consecutive days until a new pressing of oil was available.

Diwali, the celebration that takes its name from the Sanskrit for "a row of lamps", is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists on the first new moon between 13th October and 14th November each year. The festival, which also represents the end of the harvest period in India, sees the houses of the celebrants decorated with lights and the lighting of lamps known as "diyas".

The Fete des lumieres, which translates from the French as "festival of lights", is celebrated in the city of Lyon on December 8th each year. The festival dates back to an incidence of the bubonic plague that struck in the city in the 17th century and the promise of the city's mayor of the time to offer thanks to the Virgin Mary for their safe deliverance from the disease.

3. In Christianity, Jesus changed the law from "an eye for an eye" to which new code of behavior?

Answer: "Turn the other cheek"

The Old Testament relied heavily on the cultures of the Middle East which are also reflected in, for example, Hammurabi's code. These concentrated on a revenge philosophy. The Old Testament "eye for an eye" rule ensured that revenge had to be limited and proportionate. Christians interpret the life and teachings of Jesus as changing this revenge mode into one of forgiveness and love for God and neighbors.

6. The Decalogue is written on the walls of some Christian churches and recited, as often as weekly, in some others. What is the Decalogue?

Answer: the Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments, described in Exodus 20:2-17 and Deuteronomy 5: 6-21 as delivered directly by God to Moses on Mount Sinai, are part of Christianity's inheritance from Judaism. The term "decalogue" derives from the the Greek "dekalogos": "deka" means ten and "logos" means words.

The earliest Greek translations of the Old Testament call the Ten Commandments "the ten words." There is considerable disagreement among Christian churches about how the Decalogue is authoritative for Christians and about how authoritative it is.

But it is consistently valued and upheld.

9. The Bab Kisan (Kisan Gate) in the old city of Damascus, Syria, is part of a chapel commemorating what Christian missionary who escaped the city in a basket?

Answer: Paul (or Saul) of Tarsus

Paul tells his account of the story in a letter, 2 Corinthians 11:32-33: "In Damascus the governor under King Aretas had the city of the Damascenes guarded in order to arrest me. But I was lowered in a basket from a window in the wall and slipped through his hands" (New International Version). Luke, in Acts 9:23-25, tells the story from a slightly different perspective: "After many days had gone by, there was a conspiracy...to kill him, but Saul learned of their plan. Day and night they kept close watch on the city gates in order to kill him.

But his followers took him by night and lowered him in a basket through an opening in the wall" (NIV). One of seven gates of old Damascus, the Bab Kisan is traditionally seen as the location of Paul's escape.

Another gate, the Bab Tuma (or Touma), is associated with the disciple Thomas and is still near a Christian area of the city. Pope Gregory III is said to have been born near the Bab Tuma. James, the brother of Jesus, is usually associated with Jerusalem and Antioch.

10. In Matthew 23:33 (New International Version) Jesus is very upset with some scribes and Pharisees (leaders of the Jewish community) and calls them a "______ of vipers." What word completes this statement?

Answer: brood

In Matthew 3:7, John the Baptist sees a group of Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he is baptizing in the river. He calls them (in that loud voice for which John was appropriately famous) a "brood of vipers." When Jesus calls a group of scribes and Pharisees "a brood of vipers" he is quoting or echoing his cousin John. Other translations of the Bible have it a "generation" (King James) or "offspring" (English Revised Version) or "children" (Good News).
