5. The ancient Christian hymn "Phos hilaron" ("O Gracious Light") says "Our eyes behold the vesper light." To what does "vesper light" refer?

Answer: evening/sunset

The entire line of the hymn is "Now as we come to the setting of the sun, and our eyes behold the vesper light, we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." 6. What practice do the United Methodist Church, the Southern Baptist Convention, and the Mormon Church have in common?

Answer: They do not use wine during communion

The United Methodist Church and the Southern Baptist Convention use unfermented grape juice; the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, popularly known as the Mormon Church, uses water. Many other evangelical churches also use unfermented grape juice as a substitute for wine.

Interestingly, this was not always the case. Early Methodist and Baptist churches commonly used wine for communion, well into the 19th century. When the Mormon Church was founded, there was no prohibition against drinking wine, and early settlers in Utah actually built breweries and planted extensive vineyards for wine production.

It was not until July 5, 1906 that the use of wine was formally banned in communion services and water substituted in its place.

7. The Amish church fellowships are an offshoot or sect of what other religious group?

Answer: Mennonite

8. According to the Old Testament Book of Exodus, on how many tablets of stone were the Ten Commandments written each time they were given to Moses?

Answer: two

The Biblical account says that the Lord wrote the Ten Commandments on two tablets of stone and gave them to Moses, twice. The first time (Exodus 31:18), Moses broke the tablets when he returned from the mountain and found the people sinning assiduously.

The Lord replaced them (Exodus 34:1) with two more tablets, similarly inscribed. The commandments are often depicted in Christian art, five on each tablet, numbered with Roman numerals. This is an anachronism, as Roman numerals did not exist at the time of the giving of the Law.

A more appropriate numeration is the Jewish one which uses the first ten letters of the Hebrew alphabet (alef, bet, gimel, dalet ...) to designate the respective commandments.

9. Classic Christian moral theology counsels against concupiscence. What exactly is concupiscence?

Answer: lustful sexual desire

The English word concupiscence derives from the Latin "concupiscentia", which means desiring or longing of a sensual nature. The term appears three times in the King James Bible. I John 2:16 says "For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world." Both Roman Catholic and Protestant teaching is against it; Protestant theology is that concupiscence is itself a sin, while Roman catechetics hold that it is not itself a sin but inclines one to commit sin.

10. Which part of a vertebrate's anatomy are Jews forbidden to eat because of Jacob's fight with an angel?

Answer: Sciatic nerve

The sciatic nerve is a long and wide nerve that runs alongside the hip and down the leg in vertebrate animals. In Genesis 32, Jacob wrestled with an angel who struck his sciatic nerve and hurt his thigh. Because of this, the sciatic nerve, known as Gid hanasheh, or "forgotten sinew" is forbidden to be eaten by observant Jews. Animals are prepared for being eaten, including the removal of the sciatic nerve, by a ceremony called nikkur.
