Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ...Be strong and of a good courage...

Answer: Joshua 1:9

Moses is now gone, and Joshua is the leader. The Lord is now telling Joshua it is time to take the land God has promised them. He reminds him, again, that the land is already yours, just claim it in God's name.

He goes on to tell Joshua in verse five that He will always be with Joshua. Then in verse six he tells him to have courage. Then in verse seven, God tells him again to have courage.

Then in verse eight, he tells him that when they follow the book of the law (the Torah) they will be prosperous and successful.

Then in verse nine God says to Joshua, "Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." (KJV).

I love this verse because it has been said that there is a "do not be afraid" in the Bible every day of the year. In this verse alone, God has told Joshua not to be afraid twice "of a good courage" and "be not afraid." Then he tells Joshua why, "the Lord thy God is with thee" and not just right here but "whithersoever thou goest." What an encouraging verse this is!
2. ...I am fearfully and wonderfully made...

Answer: Psalm 139:14

Psalm 139 was written by King David. It is a psalm of praise in which David praises God for who God is. However, he also praises God for the way God created him. In verse 14 (KJV) he states, "I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: Marvelous are Thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well."
3. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Answer: Matthew 5:5

The "Blessed are the.." verses found in Matthew five are commonly known as "The Beatitudes." They are a part of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. There are a total of eight of these blessings in "The Beatitudes."

The one in Matthew 5:5 states, "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth."
4. And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out...

Answer: Jonah 2:10

Jonah was in a big fish's belly for three days and three nights after he disobeyed God and tried to run away when he was told to go to Nineveh. Jonah then realized perhaps he should have listened to God. He asks God to forgive in chapter two and then at the end of the chapter we are told "And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land."

Jonah then obeys God and goes to Nineveh to tell the people to repent in the third chapter; however, he is not happy about it. He is even less happy about the fact the people do repent.
5. ...if I perish, I perish.

Answer: Esther 4:16

Esther (also known as Hadassah) was a Jewess during the time the Jews were under the rule of King Ahasuerus (also known as Xerxes). She was also married to the king after Queen Vashti was banished from the kingdom after Vashti angered the king when she refused to come so the king could show the men what a beautiful queen he had while partying and drinking.

Esther's cousin Mordecai, who raised her, warned her not to tell anyone yet that she was Jewish. So she did as she was told. Haman, who was a higher-up working for the king, hated the Jews especially after Mordecai would not bow to him. He decided to get the king to allow him to kill all the Jewish people to pay for Mordecai's refusal to bow to him. The king, thinking Haman was doing something good, gave over his signet ring so that Haman could destroy the Jews, not knowing his wife is Jewish.

Then, in chapter four, Mordecai talks to Esther. He wants Esther to speak on behalf of her people. However, Esther, at first doesn't want to because even though she is the queen, if she goes to the king when she is not called, and he does not extend his scepter, she could be put to death. He asks her in verse fourteen of chapter four if perhaps she was not made queen, "for such a time as this."

Esther knows what she has to do, and in verse sixteen she says she will fast for three days, and nights as will her maidens, and then she will go "unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish."

It all worked out, of course, the Jews were saved. Haman and his sons were killed on the gallows they had built.
6. ...I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

Answer: Mark 9:24

Jesus has told a father that He can heal the man's son if the man only will believe. The man desperately wants to believe, and desperately wants to save his son and replies (in the King James Version), "Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief."

I like this verse because I feel this way often. I believe, and I want to believe more, but it's hard sometimes. So, I have to ask, "Lord, help thou mine unbelief."
7. ...thy people shall be my people and thy God my God.

Answer: Ruth 1:16

Naomi's husband and sons have just died in Moab from the famine they had tried to escape by leaving Jerusalem. While there, the sons married Moabite women: Ruth and Orpah. Naomi tells them to go and remarry to Moabite men and leave her. Orpah puts up a weak protest but leaves. Ruth, however, refuses to leave her mother-in-law. She gives a beautiful speech declaring her loyalty to Naomi. She tells her (in the King James Version) in Ruth 1:16, "Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodge, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and my thy God my God." She continues in the next verse saying she is going to die and be buried where her mother-in-law dies and if she does anything else the Lord should put her to death.

This is a big thing since she becomes the great-grandmother of King David.
8. For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ...

Answer: Romans 1:16

Paul writes this in the letter he writes to the Romans. He tells them he is not ashamed of the Gospel, and in this verse, then goes on to tell them that the reason is that "it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth." He then spends the next several chapters of Romans explaining to them why they need salvation, because one can't be saved unless they are being saved from something.
9. ...a workman that needeth not to be ashamed...

Answer: 2 Timothy 2:15

Paul wrote this letter to the young man he was disciplining, who was named Timothy. Many scholars believe this was the last letter that Paul wrote. Paul wrote this letter to encourage Timothy and give him advice as Timothy was a new pastor. He tells him that there is going to be suffering for Christians, but tells Timothy (in the King James), "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed..." In other words, he is saying, just do what you're supposed to do, and then you will have no reason to be ashamed about anything you've done.
10. I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.

Answer: Philippians 4:13

Paul wrote Philippians while in prison. He did not know what would happen to him, yet as he wrote this letter to the church at Philippi he wanted to encourage them. The entire book is filled with encouragement, but this verse especially tells them that even when things are hard, they can do "all things", not on their own, but "through Christ", because it is He who gives strength.
