Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said..."

Answer: Genesis 14:18-19

The correct answer is Genesis 14:18-19. The verses are part of a passage telling of Melchizedek, king of Salem, blessing Abram, who later became known as Abraham.

Interestingly, Melchizedek is mentioned nine times in Hebrews 7, using the NKJV. His name appears only twice in the Old Testament (Genesis 14:18 and Psalm 110:4) making him one of the very few Old Testament people whose name appears more often in the New Testament.

For the record, here's how Genesis 14:18-19, along with Verse 20, read in their entirety in the NKJV: "Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said: 'Blessed be Abram of God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.' And he gave him a tithe of all."

2. "Then the LORD spoke to Moses, 'Say to Aaron, 'Take your rod and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt... that they may become blood."

Answer: Exodus 7:19

Genesis 7:19 is the correct answer. The verse is part of a passage telling of the first of ten highly punishing plagues unleashed on Egypt, all part of a divine plan to convince the Pharaoh to grant permission to the Israelites to stage a mass exodus out of the country. In the first first plague, all the water in Egypt was turned into blood.

For the record, here's how Genesis 7:19 reads in its entirety in the NKJV: "Then the LORD spoke to Moses, 'Say to Aaron, 'Take your rod and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their streams, over their rivers, over their ponds, and over all their pools of water, that they may become blood.'"

3. "When Mordecai learned all that had happened, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and ashes... He cried out with a loud and bitter cry."

Answer: Esther 4:1

With Mordecai being mentioned in the verse I hope you were quickly able to link the verse to Esther 4:1. The verse is part of a passage telling of Mordecai's reactions after learning about Haman's diabolical scheme to kill all the Jews in the Persian empire ruled by King Ahasuerus. (In the NIV, Ahasuerus is known as Xerxes.)

Scripture goes on to tell of Mordecai and Queen Esther joining forces and preventing Haman's scheme from coming to fruition.

For the record, Esther 4:1 reads this way in its entirety in the NKJV: "When Mordecai learned all that had happened, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the midst of the city. He cried out with a loud and bitter cry."

The verse is presented in an edited version due to space limitations with the format for match quizzes.
4. "Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before unknown men."

Answer: Proverbs 22:29

The verse is from Proverbs 22:29. It's one of a gigantic collection of witty sayings and the like contained in the Book of Proverbs. Most of the content in Proverbs was written by Solomon, a king of Israel who was renowned for his wisdom. However, Agur is credited with writing Chapter 30 and Lemuel Chapter 31.

Using Bible versions such as the KJV, NKJV and NIV, Proverbs consists of thirty-one chapters.
5. "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over."

Answer: Psalm 23:5

Psalm 23:5 is the correct answer with the verse being part of the famous Psalm known as 'The Lord is My Shepherd'. The Psalm was written by David, a noted king of Israel, who is credited with writing more than seventy of the Psalms in the Old Testament book known simply as Psalms. In total, the book contains one hundred and fifty Psalms.

Using Bible versions such as the KJV, NKJV and NIV, Psalm 23 consists of six verses.
6. "He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent..."

Answer: Isaiah 53:7

The verse is from Isaiah 53:7 and Christians believe it is prophecy pertaining to the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ. Christians also believe there are numerous prophecies in the Old Testament which support the view Jesus was the Messiah. The prophecies are found in a number of books in the Old Testament with some of the most notable ones being found in Isaiah.

For the record, Isaiah 53:7 reads this way in its entirety in the NKJV: "He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth."

The verse is presented in an edited version due to space limitations with the format for match quizzes.
7. "Now as I looked at the living creatures, behold, a wheel was on the earth beside each living creature with its four faces."

Answer: Ezekiel 1:15

The verse is from Ezekiel 1:15 and is part of a passage in which Ezekiel writes about seeing strange-looking wheels in the sky as well as terrifying creatures. In fact, the passage smacks of something you would read in Revelation. However, it's all part of Ezekiel's vision of God. See Ezekiel 1:1-28 for further details.

Ezekiel prophesied in the days the Israelites had been taken into captivity in Babylon.
8. "'Vanity of vanities,' says the Preacher; 'Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.'"

Answer: Ecclesiastes 1:2

Ecclesiastes 1:2 is the correct answer. In a nutshell, Ecclesiastes is about the vanity of life, the fact everyone must die and the only thing that truly matters is to be obedient to God. Tradition holds the Book of Ecclesiastes was written by an elderly Solomon, a king of Israel noted for his wisdom.

Using Bible versions such as the KJV, NKJV and the NIV, Ecclesiastes consists of twelve chapters. It is popular with both Jews and Christians.
9. "So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them."

Answer: Jonah 3:5

With Nineveh being mentioned in the verse, I hope quiz players were quickly able to match it with Jonah 3:5.

Jonah, of course, was the prophet who received instructions from God to go to Nineveh to preach a message of repentance. However, Jonah foolishly tried to run from God by boarding a boat bound for Tarshish. When a ferocious storm erupted, Jonah ended up being tossed overboard and swallowed by a gigantic fish. Miraculously, after spending three days in the stomach of the fish, Jonah ended up being regurgitated on to dry land.

Scripture tells of him going to Nineveh and being highly successful in convincing the inhabitants about the need to repent.
10. "So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days."

Answer: Nehemiah 6:15

Nehemiah 6:15 is the correct answer. The verse tells of Nehemiah and the Israelites constructing a wall around the city of Jerusalem in fifty-two days.

Nehemiah was a cupbearer to Artaxerxes, king of Persia. Scripture tells of Nehemiah receiving permission from the king to lead a contingent of Jews back to Jerusalem to re-build a wall around the city. Despite major obstacles, they were able to quickly re-build the wall around their beloved city.
