Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love."

Answer: 1 Corinthians 13:13

The verse is from 1 Corinthians 13:13 and is part of what is known as the Love Chapter. Verse 13 is the final verse in the chapter. In the chapter, Paul makes the case a person's life is worthless if he/she does not have love.

The Love Chapter is a favorite with tens of millions of Christians around the world and is often featured at weddings.

1 Corinthians is one of two books by Paul addressed to believers in the early church in Corinth.
2. "Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy."

Answer: Matthew 5:7

The verse, "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy" is found in Matthew 5:7. The verse is part of the ever-popular passage known as The Beatitudes. See Matthew 5:1-11 for further details.

The Gospel of Matthew was written by Matthew, one of the original Twelve Disciples and a tax collector.
3. "O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God -- through Jesus Christ our Lord!"

Answer: Romans 7:24-25

The verses in question are from Romans 7:24-25. The verses are part of a passage in which Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, makes the case the law can not free a person from sin. He also makes the case at the beginning of the chapter that people are freed from the law, thanks to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

The Book of Romans was addressed to members of the early church in Rome.
4. "Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. and He said, 'Young man, I say to you, arise.'"

Answer: Luke 7:14

Luke 7:14 is the correct answer. The verse is featured in a passage telling of Jesus miraculously raising the son of an unnamed widow from the dead at Nain. According to Verse 14, Jesus simply touched the open coffin and then stated, "Young man, I say to you, arise." Miraculously, the man did just that!

For complete details about the miracle, see Luke 7:11-17.
5. "...they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that they might just touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well."

Answer: Mark 6:56

Mark 6:56 tells of a large number of people being healed by simply touching Jesus. The miraculous healings took place after Jesus calmed a vicious storm on the Sea of Galilee and fed a multitude of people with five loaves and two fish.

For the record, here's how Mark 6:56 reads in its entirety in the NKJV: "He entered, into villages, cities, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that they might just touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well."

Part of the verse is not featured in the question due to space limitations with the match quiz format.
6. "This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare."

Answer: 1 Timothy 1:18

With the name Timothy in the verse, I hope quiz players found it easy to match this one up with 1 Timothy 1:18. The verse is part of a passage in which Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, urges Timothy to fight the good fight. Timothy was a young and timid worker in the early church who appears to have been a favorite of Paul.

Timothy was from Lystra, a city in present day Turkey.
7. "For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ."

Answer: Philippians 3:20

The statement about a Christian's citizenship being in heaven was made by Paul in Philippians 3:20. The verse is part of a passage in which Paul challenges people to follow his example in their walk with Christ.

Using Bible versions such as the KJV, NKJV and NIV, Philippians consists of four chapters. It is one of thirteen books Paul is credited with writing.
8. "'I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,'" and, "'What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches.'"

Answer: Revelation 1:11

The verse is from Revelation 1:11 and quotes Jesus giving instructions to John to write letters to seven churches in Asia Minor, now known as Turkey. The seven churches were in Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.

Tradition holds John, one of the original Twelve Disciples, was the writer of Revelation. According to Revelation 1:9 he was in exile on the island of Patmos when he had a vision that has challenged and perplexed readers for two thousand years.
9. "And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles."

Answer: Acts 1:26

Acts 1:26 is part of a passage telling of Matthias being selected by the casting of lots to replace Judas Iscariot as a disciple. In the running with Matthias to replace Judas was Joseph, who was called Barsabas and surnamed Justus.

After this incident there is no further mention of Matthias in Scripture.

For further details about the appointment of Matthias, see Acts 1:15-26.
10. "Nicodemus said to Him, 'How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?'"

Answer: John 3:4

The verse is from John 3:4 and is part of a night-time conversation between Nicodemus, a Pharisee, and Jesus. In John 3:3, Jesus had told Nicodemus he must be "born again" to be able to see the kingdom of God. In response, Nicodemus wanted to know how a man could possibly enter his mother's womb a second time to be born again.

For further details, see John 3:1-21.
