Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."

Answer: John 3:16

For evangelical Christians, John 3:16 is a verse that is front and center. The statement was made by Jesus in a theological discussion with Nicodemus, a Pharisee who visited Him at night time.

It was during the discussion, Jesus told Nicodemus, "unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." (See John 3:3)

The Gospel of John was written by John, one of the original Twelve Disciples.
2. "Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!"

Answer: Philippians 4:4

The verse in question is found in Philippians 4:4. The verse is one of the more famous ones penned by Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles. In the next verse, Paul writes, "Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand."

The book of Philippians was addressed to believers in the early church at Philippi, an ancient city in Greece.
3. "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast."

Answer: Ephesians 2:8-9

Ephesians 2:8-9 is the correct answer. Many Christians refer to the two verses when stating the belief salvation is not by works, but through the grace of Jesus Christ. In the passage Ephesians 2:1-10, Paul presents the case to the Ephesians that salvation is by grace alone.

Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, wrote the book of Ephesians and addressed it to believers in the early church at Ephesus, an ancient Greek city in present day Turkey.
4. "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching."

Answer: Hebrews 10:25

The verse is found in Hebrews 10:25. I personally prefer the wording in the NIV for this verse: "Not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another -- and all the more as you see the Day approaching."

In other words, the verse urges believers to attend regular worship services and Bible studies and to constantly encourage one another as the day of Christ's return draws nearer.

Unfortunately, no one knows for certain who wrote the Book of Hebrews. Over the centuries, theologians have speculated everyone from Paul to Priscilla wrote the book.
5. "Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold."

Answer: Luke 19:8

Luke 19:8 is a quote from Zacchaeus, the diminutive chief tax collector of Jericho who climbed up a tree to get a better look at Jesus as he passed through town. The verse is part of a passage in which Jesus tells Zacchaeus to descend from the tree as He wanted to spend the night at his house.

Tax collectors were despised in New Testament times because they were traitors working for the Romans. On top of this, they were notorious for overcharging the people and keeping a cut of the proceeds.

In Verse 8 Zaachaeus indicates to Jesus he was determined to make things right, stating he would give half of his goods to the poor and he would restore fourfold if he took anything from anyone by false accusation.

The story of Zacchaeus is found in only the Gospel of Luke.
6. "For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you."

Answer: Titus 1:5

Titus 1:5 is the correct answer. Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, wrote a letter to Titus, a worker in the early church, and the letter has become known as the Book of Titus. Titus served on the Greek island of Crete.

In his letter to Titus, Paul gives a number of guidelines pastors are to follow. Using Bible versions such as the KJV, NKJV and the NIV, Titus consists of three chapters.
7. "Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away."

Answer: Revelation 21:1

Revelation 21:1 is the correct answer. The chapter goes on to tell of the New Jerusalem "coming down out of heaven", as per the NKJV. Details about the New Jerusalem follow an account of the destruction of Babylon in Chapters 18 and 19.

Tradition holds John, one of the original Twelve Disciple, wrote Revelation, the last book in the New Testament.
8. "I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten while in my chains, who once was unprofitable to you, but now is profitable to you and to me."

Answer: Philemon 1:10-11

Onesimus was a slave who ran away from his master Philemon, with the verses in question found in Philemon 1:10-11.

In the book of Philemon, which is actually a letter, Paul urges Philemon to accept Onesimus back as an equal in Christ. Paul wrote the letter after he had converted Onesimus to Christianity. Philemon was apparently an old friend of Paul.
9. "I write to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for His name's sake."

Answer: 1 John 2:12

1 John 2:12 is the correct answer. In the Book of 1 John, the term 'little children' appears nine times, using the NKJV. In fact, the term 'little children' appears more times in 1 John than any other book in the Old and New Testaments, using the NKJV. This even though the book is relatively small, consisting of only five chapters, using Bible versions such as the KJV, NKJV and NIV.

Tradition holds the book was written by John, one of the original Twelve Disciples.
10. "And in a window sat a certain young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep."

Answer: Acts 20:9

The verse in question is found in Acts 20:9 and is part of a passage telling of a young man named Eutychus falling asleep in a third floor window during a lengthy sermon by Paul and plunging to his death. Scripture goes on to tell of Paul miraculously raising Eutychus from the dead and then going back upstairs and preaching some more. The incident took place in Troas. For further details see Acts 20:7-12.

The Book of Acts tells of the growth of early church and was written by Luke, a physician and a church worker who often labored alongside Paul.
