Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For $100, what was the first miracle of Jesus listed in the Gospel of John? (Jn 2)

Answer: Turning water into wine

It is written in the second chapter of the Gospel of John that Jesus and his disciples are at a wedding feast in the town of Cana. It comes to Mary's attention that the host had embarrassingly run out of wine. While Jesus initially objects to performing a miracle, believing that his time is not yet right, he obeys his mother's wishes.

In this miracle, Jesus asks the staff to fill up several huge ceremonial washing jars with water. After tasting it, the head steward is amazed at the quality of the wine now filling the containers.

The Gospel of John states that Jesus' action of performing this miracle helped many of the disciples to begin believing in Jesus. (Jn 2:1-11)
2. For $200, which miracle do both Jesus and Peter perform on the Sea of Galilee, according to the Gospel of Matthew (Mt 14)?

Answer: Walking on water

After Jesus performed the miracle of feeding the 5,000, He sends his disciples ahead in a boat to cross the Sea of Galilee while He stays behind on the mountain to pray. The wind makes the disciples' journey difficult as they struggle against the waves.

In the middle of the night, Jesus frightens His disciples by walking on the sea. Matthew tells us that Peter bravely wants to join Jesus, which at first he does successfully! However, we then read of the wind picking up, causing Peter to be afraid and begin to sink.

After Peter cries out for help, Jesus is immediately there to catch the disciple and help him back into the boat. The account of Jesus walking on water is also told in the Gospels of Mark and John, although in these accounts Peter does not leave the boat.

As soon as Jesus enters the boat the sea is calmed, and the disciples are safe. (Mt 14:22-34, Mk 6:45-53, and Jn 6:15-21)
3. For $300, where was Jesus praying right before he was arrested?

Answer: The Garden of Gethsemane

All four gospels say that right before Jesus was arrested he had taken a few disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. He requested that his friends stay awake, but every time Jesus came back they were asleep. Jesus knew he was about to be arrested and asked God to reveal another option, but in the end, Jesus promised to fulfill God's will.

At the conclusion of the prayer, Judas Iscariot came forward and kissed Jesus on the cheek so the soldiers knew who to arrest. (Mt 26:36-56, Mk 14:32-50, Lk 22:39-53, and Jn 18:1-12)
4. For $500, how does John the Baptist die?

Answer: He is beheaded.

John the Baptist was critical of Herod Antipas divorcing his wife and marrying his brother's divorced wife, Herodias. It's rather complicated, but, more importantly, it was against the laws laid out in the book of Leviticus.
Since John had the masses visiting him for baptism, they listened to his criticism of the behavior of Herod and Herodias. This public shame made Herodias furious, and she had her new husband, Herod Antipas, arrest John the Baptist.
Herod was afraid of him as he believed John was a prophet, so at first he only imprisoned John. However, after a delightful dance at a banquet by Salome, the daughter of Herodias, Herod publicly proclaimed his willingness to give the girl anything she wanted, up to and including half of the entire kingdom. After conversing with her vengeful mother, Salome requested the head of John the Baptist on a platter. Though he was uncomfortable with the decision, Herod had no choice but to order the beheading of John the Baptist. (Mt 14:6-12, Mk 6:17-29, and Lk 7:18-25)
5. For $1,000, who was blinded by the light on the road to Damascus?

Answer: Saul

So does anyone else hear in their head "Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce...?" No? In chapter 9 of Acts of the Apostles, it is written that Saul, later to be named Paul, was traveling to Damascus to arrest anyone who was found to be a follower of Jesus. Before Saul reached the town, a blinding light and disembodied voice asked him why he was persecuting Christians.

The voice identified itself as Jesus and told Saul to continue to Damascus where further instructions would be given. As Saul rose from the ground, he found that he could no longer see, and had to be led into the city by his travel companions. Understandably, the Christians of Damascus were terrified of Saul, but the Lord convinced the Christian Ananias to baptize Saul, turning the greatest prosecutor of the early church into its greatest advocate.
6. For $2,000, how many plagues did the Egyptians endure according to the book of Exodus?

Answer: Ten

In the book of Exodus, the following ten plagues are listed in order: water into blood, frogs, lice, flies, killing the livestock, boils, hail, locusts, darkness, and killing of the firstborns. Exodus 7 tells of the first plague turning the Nile River into blood killing the fish and creating a terrible stench. Pharaoh was not impressed and had his sorcerers do the same thing. With the second plague, the sorcerers were also able to make the Nile overflow with frogs but they were not able to reproduce the lice of the third plague, causing Pharaoh to admit it was an act of God.

As the plagues continued, Pharaoh at first would tell the Israelites they could go to the desert, but then relented once the plague was over. Finally, the tenth plague caused the death of Pharaoh's son, so he ordered the Israelites to go...before changing his mind again and chasing after them with his chariots. (Ex 7-12)
7. For $4,000, which was NOT a gift given by the Magi to Jesus?

Answer: Silver

The Gospel of Matthew tells us the Magi saw a star appearing in the sky telling them that the king of the Jews was born. As wise as they were, they thought it was a good idea to visit the current king of the Jews to ask him where the new king was born.

The advisors to King Herod tell the Magi it was written that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. When the Magi follow the star to the house of Jesus, they present Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The three gifts have the following symbolic meanings about Christ: Gold that He is King, Frankincense that He is High Priest, and Myrrh for anointing His death. (Mt 2:1-12)
8. For $8,000, who was the first Christian martyr recorded in the Acts of the Apostles?

Answer: Stephen

Saint Stephen is the first recorded martyr in the Acts of the Apostles. Stephen is arrested by the Sanhedrin, and he gives a lengthy defense of Old Testament scriptures that he believes prove Jesus is indeed the Messiah. After this, Stephen accuses the Sanhedrin of murdering the prophets and then Jesus, the Righteous One. Stephen goes on to say that he can actually see Jesus standing at God's side, thus causing the leaders to drag him outside the city and stone him to death.

Incidentally, a young boy named Saul, who would later become the apostle Paul, was there to witness the stoning.

As Stephen died, he asked the Lord to receive his spirit and not to hold the stoning against his murderers. (Ac 7:1-59)
9. For $16,000, which Gospel is NOT considered to be a synoptic Gospel?

Answer: John

Biblical scholars have long realized that the Gospel of John is very different from the other three Gospels. Matthew, Mark, and Luke come from a similar point of view with similar, or even word-for-word, stories at times. In fact, over 90% of the Gospel of Mark is also found in the Gospel of Matthew, the Gospel of Luke, or both.

However, 90% of the Gospel of John is only found in John. There is no scholarly consensus, but a popular conclusion is that Mark was written first and that Matthew and Luke used both Mark and another lost source to write their Gospels. John, on the other hand, may have been written without using another known source, or the writer may have had a different goal in mind.

The Synoptics tend to focus on the ministry in Galilee and country life challenges, while John focuses on Jerusalem and the Jewish leaders.

The Synoptics give details of Jesus sharing the seder meal with his disciples before being arrested, while the Gospel of John has Jesus, as the lamb of God, being crucified at the same time as the Passover lambs are being prepared in the temple before the seder meal.
10. For $32,000, which type of fruit tree did Jesus curse for not having fruit when he wanted it?

Answer: Fig

All three of the synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) tell of a fig tree being cursed. In the Old Testament, several accounts compare the health of the relationship between God and Jewish people to a fig tree bearing fruit or not. With this understanding, the Gospels use the fig tree not bearing fruit to be comparable to people not accepting Jesus as the Messiah.
Mark and Matthew place the cursing of the fig tree right before they tell of Jesus clearing the money changers out of the temple. Some scholars have suggested that the reference to it not being the right season for fruit stem from it being important to provide piety and righteousness to God at all times, not just on the Sabbath.
The Gospel of Luke uses a different approach by having the cursing of the fig tree in a parable with an impatient Lord. The gardener asks the owner to give the fig more time to grow, but that if no fruit appears, it should be torn down. (Mt 21: 18-22, Mk 11:12-25, Lk 13:6-9)
11. For $64,000, whose wife told him "to curse God and die?"

Answer: Job

In the first chapter of the book of Job, it is told that Job is a very wealthy man with lots of livestock and a large family. Job is portrayed as being so pious that he offers sacrifices for each of his children, in case they unknowingly sin. Satan is not impressed with Job's piety, since the man has everything he could ever want. God tells Satan to do as he wishes with Job, short of killing him. So, Satan kills all of Job's children in one day and has all of his livestock stolen. Job immediately prays to God, and never blames God for the huge loss.

Then Satan afflicts Job's body with boils from head to foot making him miserable. It is at this point that Job's wife tells him "Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!" (Jb 2:9) Job still does not curse God, but rather sits in ashes and misery.
12. For $125,000, how many people does Revelation say are servants of God and will be sealed to protect them and redeem them from the destruction of the earth?

Answer: 144,000 people

Revelation has some interesting symbolism. According to chapter 7, there are 144,000 people who are servants of God who received a seal on their foreheads to protect them from harm. It goes on to tell us that each of the twelve tribes of Israel has a total of 12,000 sealed servants. Later in chapter 14, we see the redeemed have a special song to sing. Oh, and by the way, only virgin adult men are selected for the 144,000.

These men also are blameless and never tell lies. Given these requirements, maybe the number is not too low after all? In ancient times numbers had power and the number twelve symbolized "totality", so squaring it and multiplying it by 1,000 is serious totality!
13. For $250,000, who was the high priest at the time when Jesus was handed over to Pilate?

Answer: Caiaphas

The Gospel accounts make it easy for Christians to see Caiaphas as a villain. The contemporary scholar, Josephus, writes that the high priests were political appointees by the Romans. Annas had been high priest but lost the job when Augustus Caesar died. Josephus goes on to tell us the Roman Legate Vitellius (Pilate's predecessor) is the one who appointed Caiaphas high priest and that he held the position for far longer than the other high priests before and after him. So, Caiaphas must have been very good at keeping the Romans happy by keeping the Jewish people peaceful.

In chapter 11 of the Gospel of John, it is written that after Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin began to plot how to quiet Him. Caiaphas feared that the popularity of Jesus might cause the Jewish people to revolt and bring the power of Rome down upon them.
14. For $500,000, in the book of Genesis, Joseph hid a silver cup in which of his brother's bags?

Answer: Benjamin

Joseph is the eleventh son of Jacob, but the oldest son of Jacob's favorite wife Rachel. Benjamin is Jacob's twelfth son and Rachel's only other son. In Genesis, it is written that Jacob showed clear favoritism to Joseph, causing his older brothers to be jealous. To make matters worse, Joseph has a dream suggesting his brothers would all bow down to him. Enraged, his brothers sold him into slavery to merchants going to Egypt. After several years, and some time in prison, Joseph is able to interpret Pharaoh's dream, and is appointed the second most powerful man in Egypt. Joseph helps the Egyptians store seven years of abundant harvests to help feed them during seven years of famine. Joseph's brothers come to Egypt to buy food so their family does not starve, but they do not recognize Joseph as their brother. Joseph hides the silver cup in Benjamin's bag as a test to see how his brothers would respond to Jacob's youngest son being arrested.

The brothers know if they do not come home with Benjamin their father might die from sorrow, so the brothers plead to arrest one of them instead.

When Joseph sees their remorse, he tells them who he is and has the whole family brought to Egypt to live with him.
15. For $1,000,000, in the Old Testament, which prophet was taken up to heaven in a fiery chariot?

Answer: Elijah

Elijah was a powerful prophet of Israel at the time of King Ahab. In the first book of Kings, it is written that King Ahab and his wife Jezebel worship Baal, thus angering the Lord, who then causes a famine on the land.
Elijah gets into a competition with the priest of Baal to see whose deity can cause a pile of wooden sticks to spontaneously light under a sacrifice to each of their gods. Dozens of Baal's prophets have no luck at creating even a spark. For Elijah's turn, he has water dumped on his pile of sticks so they are soaked. He then prays to God, and the fire comes down from heaven to consume the sacrifice, causing the people to believe in the Lord.
In 2 Kings, it is written that Elijah is taken up to heaven in a fiery chariot by a whirlwind. The book of Malachi prophesied that Elijah would come down from heaven before the Lord's Messiah would appear.
It is then written in the three synoptic Gospels that on a mountain Jesus meets and talks to both Moses and Elijah and is transfigured into dazzling white light. "A voice came from the cloud, saying, 'This is my Son, whom I have chosen, listen to him.'" (Lk 9:35)
