Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. [$100] Which of these disciples was not a fisherman?

Answer: Matthew

Matthew was a tax collector. See Matthew 9:9-12. The calling of Andrew, James and Peter can be found in Matthew 4:18-22. It is clear from this passage that they were all fishermen.
2. [$200] How did the Israelites cross the Jordan?

Answer: they walked across

See Joshua 3. As soon as the priests set foot in the water, God parted the waves, so that all the Israelites could cross on dry land.
3. [$300] Which disciple wanted Jesus to wash more parts of his body, not just his feet at the Last Supper?

Answer: Peter

John 13:9. In this passage Jesus sets his followers a wonderful example of serving each other.
4. [$500] How many stones did David pick up when he was about to slay Goliath?

Answer: 5

See 1 Samuel 17:40. Although David picked up 5 stones, he only used one, as he knocked down Goliath with his first shot (verse 49). He then cut off Goliath's head.
5. [$1,000] Who was the mother of Jacob's youngest 2 sons, Joseph and Benjamin?

Answer: Rachel

See Genesis 35:24. Rachel is one of several women in the Bible who was unable to bear children initially and of whom it is said that God granted their desire. See Genesis 30:1-2 and 22-24. Childlessness in the Old Testament was considered to be a sign of God's displeasure.
6. [$2,000] 'I am the Lord your God who brought you up out of ___ out of the land of Slavery.' (New International Version)

Answer: Egypt

Exodus 20:1. This is the beginning of the passage where the 10 commandments are quoted. God began by reminding the Israelites who He is and what He had done for them.
7. [$4,000] Esau, Jacob's brother, was a hairy man.

Answer: True

See Genesis 25:24-5. This is why Rebecca had to cover Jacob's arm with animal hair in order to deceive his father into thinking that he was Esau (Genesis 27:1-40). In this way, Jacob received the blessing from his father which was due to the oldest son.
8. [$8,000] Jesus told his followers to forgive those who offend them how many times, as related in the New International Version?

Answer: 77

See Matthew 18:22. Some versions translate this as 70 x 7. I think Jesus is really telling us not to keep a score of how many times we forgive someone, as most of us would lose count before we got to 77, and still less remember up to 490!
9. [$16,000] Which disciple's mother-in-law was healed by Jesus?

Answer: Simon

See Mark 1:29-31. This was before Jesus gave Simon the name Peter (Matthew 16:13-20).
10. [$32,000] In Acts 12 Peter is released from prison and goes to John Mark's house, where they are having a prayer meeting for his release. Who do those gathered think is at the door?

Answer: Peter's angel

The servant girl recognized Peter's voice, but did not open the door to him (verse 14). Because they had not seen him, the others found it hard to believe that God had answered their prayers in such a dramatic way.
11. [$64,000] Which lady of Joppa was remembered for the good that she had done and for helping the poor, especially by making them clothes?

Answer: Dorcas

See Acts 9:36-42. God raised this lady from the dead through Peter's prayers.
12. [$125,000] Which prophet of the Old Testament received an important message from God when he visited a potter's house?

Answer: Jeremiah

See Jeremiah Chapter 18.
13. [$250,000] Who is the author of the Book of Hebrews?

Answer: No one knows for certain

Unlike many of the New Testament letters, no one is named as the author in the introduction. In fact, the author launches into his subject without any form of greeting, which is unusual. Several people, such as Paul or Timothy, have been suggested as possible authors. It is unlikely to have been Timothy as he is mentioned in the third person in Hebrews 13:23.

When I was a student 30 years ago, one of the jokes then current was that the author must have been a woman, because only a woman could say that she had written a short letter, when it was 13 chapters long! (See Hebrews 13:22.)

Of course, the original Greek manuscript would not have had been divided into chapters and verses, but that is not the point.
14. [$500,000] What was the name of the queen of Persia, whom Esther replaced?

Answer: Vashti

See Esther 2:17. Esther was Jewish, but she hid her nationality from the king and he chose her for her great beauty after Vashti had displeased him by refusing to appear before him when he summoned her (Esther 1:10-21).

Bigthana and Teresh are two of the palace guards mentioned in Chapter 2 and Abihail was Esther's father (2:15).
15. [$1,000,000] How old was Abraham when God called him to leave his country, his people and his father's household to go to a land that God would show him?

Answer: 75

See Genesis 12:1-4. It is a wonderful encouragement to those of us who have grey hair to see all that God did through Abraham in his later years.
