Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For $100, what kind of fruit grew on the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil?

Answer: we do not know

Genesis 3. We are not told what type of fruit grew on the tree, although in verse 6 we are told that Eve saw that it 'was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom'. She ate it herself and offered it to Adam and the rest is history.

Traditionally the fruit is spoken of as an apple, but there is no scriptural evidence for this.
2. For $200, which Pharisee came to Jesus by night?

Answer: Nicodemus

John 3. It seems that Nicodemus was genuinely interested in what Jesus taught, unlike most of the Pharisees and other Jewish religious leaders.

In John 7:45-52, we read of an incident where the Jewish religious leaders are discussing Jesus' teaching and Nicodemus is the only one who speaks up to defend him.

Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, not Pharisees. Gamaliel was a Pharisee, who is mentioned in Acts 22:3 as the teacher of Paul.

Gamaliel also appears in Acts 5, when the Sanhedrin is discussing how to deal with the early believers. His advice on that occasion could be considered sound for judging any new religious movement: 'For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.' (5:38-9).
3. For $300, in Luke's genealogy of Jesus, back to whom is his family tree traced?

Answer: God

Luke 3:37. Adam, Methuselah and Abraham all appear in the genealogy. Adam is described as the son of God.

There is another genealogy of Jesus in Matthew Chapter 1, which traces Jesus' ancestry back to Abraham.
4. For $500, what natural phenomenon occurred when the angel rolled the stone away from Jesus' tomb?

Answer: earthquake

Matthew 28:2. According to the account in Mark's gospel, the women who came early in the morning to the tomb were concerned about how they could open it because of the heavy stone that covered the entrance. When they got there, it was already open.
5. For $1,000, what did Solomon ask God to give him at the beginning of his reign?

Answer: wisdom and knowledge

2 Chronicles 1:1-11. Because Solomon did not ask for any of the other things, God promised to give them to him in addition to wisdom and knowledge.
6. For $2,000, what was Moses doing when the Lord appeared to him in a burning bush?

Answer: tending his father-in-law's flock

Exodus 3:1. Moses had fled Egypt because he killed an Egyptian who was beating a Hebrew (see Exodus 2:11-15). He settled in Midian, and eventually married one of the daughters of Jethro, the priest of the area.

Moses stayed there for a long time (2:23) and I think that the lessons he learnt whilst guarding the sheep would have helped him in his later task of leading the Israelites through the wilderness.
7. For $4,000, when Elisha's servant cooked a meal for the school of prophets, someone added something poisonous to the stew by mistake. What did Elisha tell his servant to add to the pot to nullify the poison?

Answer: flour

2 Kings 4:38-41. The man who added the noxious substance did not know what he was doing. Only with God's help could throwing flour into the pot act as an antidote to the poison. As far as I know, flour is not normally an antidote.
8. For $8,000, who said: 'Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk'?

Answer: Peter

Acts 3:6. Peter and John met a beggar at the temple gate called Beautiful. He expected them to give him money, but instead he was healed. This caused both him and all those who saw and recognised him to praise God.
9. For $16,000, in Luke 24, we read the story of two disciples on the road to Emmaus. How and when did they recognise Jesus?

Answer: when he broke bread with them at the inn

Luke 24:13-35. It is not clear from the passage why they recognised Jesus at this point. One possibility is that his actions in breaking the bread reminded them of the last supper. Another possibility is that they could see the scars from the nails on his hands. We know from Thomas' encounter with Jesus after the resurrection (John 20:24-29) that the scars were still visible in Jesus' resurrected body.

Although Jesus explained the scriptures concerning his death and resurrection to the two disciples, whilst they were still on the road, they did not recognise him at that point.

When Jesus left them, the two disciples returned to Jerusalem and heard the other disciples' account of how Jesus had appeared to Simon. They then shared their own encounter with the risen Lord.
10. For $32,000, which Old Testament King said these words? "I will not sacrifice to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing."

Answer: David

2 Samuel 24:24. This chapter as a whole is a little difficult to understand. The first part tells us that David sinned by taking a census of how big his army was. Matthew Henry, in his commentary on this chapter, suggests that the reason this was a sin was because David wanted to appear more formidable to his enemies and that he was trusting in his own strength and ability rather than in God.

As a result of David's sin, he is given three choices: three years of famine in the land, three years of fleeing from his enemies or three days of plague in the land. He chooses the last, preferring to trust in the mercy of God.

God stops the plague at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite and tells David to build an altar and offer sacrifices there. Araunah offers to give the threshing floor to David, at which point he utters the words quoted above.

After he has bought the threshing floor, built an altar and offered sacrifices, the plague is stopped.
11. For $64,000, which King of Judah rebuilt the temple in his youth, but later turned back to idolatry?

Answer: Joash

2 Chronicles 24. At the beginning of his reign, he listened to Jehoiada, the priest, and rebuilt the temple, which had been ransacked and some of its sacred objects used for worshipping Baal (verse 7).

After Jehoiada died, however, Joash listened to the wrong advisors. As a result, the temple was abandoned and the people returned to the worship of idols (17-27). When the son of Jehoiada prophesied against this, he was murdered.

An invading Aramean army severely injured Joash and he was killed by his officials in revenge for the murder of Zechariah (Jehoiada's son).

Amaziah is another king of Judah, whose story is found in 2 Chronicles 25.

The story of Manasseh is found in 2 Chronicles 33. It is an interesting one, because he started off as a bad king, but he repented and later became a good king.

Uzziah's story can be found in 2 Chronicles 26. His reign started well, but later he became proud, which led to his downfall. For the latter part of his life, he suffered from leprosy and had to live in a separate house.

In the year that Uzziah died, Isaiah had his vision of the Lord in the temple (Isaiah 6:1).
12. For $125,000, which of the seven deacons of the early church, appointed in Acts 6, had four unmarried daughters who prophesied?

Answer: Philip

Acts 21:9. Philip is one of the seven deacons appointed in Acts 6. He is the one who appears most in the book of Acts. In Acts 8:4-8 we see him preaching in Samaria and later in the same chapter (26-49), we have perhaps the best known story about him, where he is sent to meet the Ethiopian eunuch in the desert.

Stephen, as well as being one of the seven, was the first Christian martyr.

Nicanor and Timon were two other members of the group of seven, but we do not read any more about them in the book of Acts.
13. For $250,000, from which tribe, whose land would later be taken by the Israelites, did Abraham buy a burial plot for his wife, Sarah?

Answer: Hittites

Genesis 23:1-20. In Deuteronomy 7:1, God promises Moses that He will bring the Israelites into the land they are entering to possess and drive out before them many nations - the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, seven nations larger and stronger than them.

However, according to Judges 3:5-7, the Israelites later intermarried with all of these tribes, so they were never fully conquered or driven out. This is given as one of the reasons that the Israelites descended into idolatry, as they began to worship their gods rather than the God of Israel.
14. For $500,000, to whom did Jesus say: 'Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?'

Answer: Martha, sister of Lazarus

John 11:40. When Jesus arrives at Lazarus' tomb, he tells the people there to remove the stone which covers it. Martha, Lazarus' sister, protests, saying that there will be a bad smell, because he has been dead for four days. This is Jesus' response to her.
15. For $1,000,000, to whom does Paul write: 'we were gentle among you, like a mother caring for her little children.'?

Answer: Thessalonians

1 Thessalonians 2:7. It seems that he had a very close relationship with these people.
