Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For $100, which of Jesus's disciples is known as the 'doubting' disciple?

Answer: Thomas

This is because of the incident recorded in John 20:24-31. Thomas was not present when Jesus first appeared to his disciples after the resurrection.

Thomas said that unless he saw the nail marks on Jesus' hands and the wounds in his side, he would not believe that Jesus had risen from the dead. However, when Jesus appeared to the disciples again in Thomas's presence, Thomas recognized him immediately, saying 'My Lord and my God'.

Thomas's other nickname, Didymus, which is mentioned in this passage, means twin in New Testament Greek. However, we do not know who his twin was. There is no evidence in the Bible to suggest that his twin was one of the other disciples.
2. For $200, which bird fits into this New International Version quote from Isaiah 40: 'They will soar on wings like _____'?

Answer: eagles

Isaiah 40:31. God promises that he will help and strengthen those who trust in him even when they go through difficult times.
3. For $300, in which craftsman's house did Jeremiah receive an important message from God?

Answer: potter

Jeremiah 18. God says he is ultimately in control and he decides whether a nation will prosper or not. Israel in the Old Testament did not prosper as a nation, because they were disobedient to God.

We can take comfort from this passage when considering the situation in some countries today. Although it seems that evil men prosper, ultimately, the Bible says they will have to answer to God for their actions. This message is echoed in some of the psalms, e.g. Psalm 37.
4. For $500, on which Mediterranean island was Paul shipwrecked?

Answer: Malta

Acts 28:1-10. If you read the previous chapter, you will see that there was a huge storm and the sailors feared for their lives. But Paul was confident that they would all be saved alive, because God had told him that he was go on trial before Caesar and that God would save the lives of the others in the boat with him (27:13-26).
5. For $1,000, which of these is not one of the seven churches in Asia Minor mentioned in Revelation Chapters 2 and 3?

Answer: Colossae

Revelation Chapters 2 and 3. Although Colossae was in the same region and Paul wrote one of his letters to them, which appears in the New Testament, Colossae is not one of the churches addressed in these chapters.

The message to the church in Ephesus appears in chapter 2:1-7. The message to the church in Pergamum appears in chapter 2:12-17 and the message to the church in Philadelphia appears in chapter 3:7-13.
6. For $2,000, in Daniel 6, a decree was issued that anyone who prayed to a god or man other than the king in the following 30 days, should be thrown into the lions' den. What was Daniel's response?

Answer: he carried on praying three times a day to God as before

Daniel 6. Darius' courtiers encouraged the king to issue this decree because they were jealous of the power and influence that Daniel had.

They knew that Daniel would carry on praying as he had before, so they hoped to get rid of him. However, the end result was the opposite of what they intended.

When Daniel was thrown into the lions' den, an angel of the Lord shut the lions' mouths and he was saved. To be fair to the king, it was obvious that he did not want to throw Daniel into the lions' den, but he had no choice, because of his decree.

The story ends with Daniel's accusers and their wives and children being thrown to the lions, which seems a bit harsh to me, since their families had done no wrong. The king then issued a decree that Daniel's God was the only one to be worshipped throughout his kingdom.
7. For $4,000, which Minor Prophet of the Old Testament wrote these beautiful words of trust in God? 'Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior.'

Answer: Habakkuk

Habakkuk 3:17-18. These words have been set to the music of Beethoven's ode to joy.
8. For $8,000, in Genesis 20, Abraham misled Abimelech about his relationship with Sarah. What relation did he say that she was to him?

Answer: sister

Genesis 20. In fact this may have been true, because it appears that Sarah was a blood relative as well as being Abraham's wife. However, obviously Abimelech would not have shown such interest in Sarah, if he had known that she was Abraham's wife.

This is the second time that Abraham made this mistake, because when he went to Egypt (Genesis 12:10-20), he told Pharaoh that Sarah was his sister.
9. For $16,000, several times in the gospels, it is written that the Chief Priests and Pharisees were angered by Jesus's teaching and looked for a way to arrest him. Why did they not do so until he was betrayed by Judas?

Answer: because they were afraid of the people, who considered him a prophet

See, for example, Matthew 21:33-46 and Luke 20:9-19. These are separate accounts of the same incident in Jesus' ministry, which often happens, particularly in the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke.

Perhaps in their hearts they knew that what Jesus said about them was true, although they would not admit that publicly.
10. For $32,000, according to Revelation Chapter 20, for how many years was Satan bound?

Answer: 1,000

Revelation 20:1-20. As with many passages in the book of Revelation, various groups of Christians interpret this in different ways.

Some say that Christians will be taken from the earth before the 1,000-year reign of Jesus (also known as the millennium). Others believe that some or all Christians will have to suffer the intense persecution which will take place during the millennium.
11. For $64,000, what relation was Ruth to King David?

Answer: great-grandmother

Ruth 4:17. Her grandson was Jesse, David's father.
12. For $125,000, what did Moses say would keep the Israelites from sinning?

Answer: fear of God

Exodus 20:18-21. This was immediately after God had given the 10 commandments to Moses. The people were so afraid of the thunder and lightning that was coming from Mount Sinai, that they begged Moses to speak to them on behalf of God, rather than God speaking to them directly.

However, their great fear of God apparently did not last very long, because just a few chapters later they built the golden calf (Exodus 32) in spite of God's instructions here that they should not build gods of silver or gold (verse 23).

Most of the intervening chapters are taken up with God giving further laws and instructions for the building of the Tabernacle to Moses. Because Moses spent so long speaking with God on the mountain, the people started to doubt both him and God.
13. For $250,000, which of these sets of three women are all amongst the five women mentioned in Matthew's genealogy of Jesus?

Answer: Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba

Matthew 1:1-16. Although Bathsheba is not named, she is mentioned as Uriah's wife and the mother of Solomon (verse 6).

Neither Ruth nor Rahab were Jews, but they were ancestors of Jesus, which is perhaps another sign that the Gospel which Jesus brought was for all the people of the earth and not just the Jews.
14. For $500,000, according to the book of Jude, how should those who doubt be treated?

Answer: be merciful to them

Jude verse 22. Although Jude is one of the shortest books in the Bible, being only one chapter, it also contains what I think is one of the loveliest and most powerful endings of any book in the whole Bible (24-25).
15. For $1,000,000, according to Hebrews 11, what physical position did Jacob take when he was worshiping God?

Answer: he leant upon his staff

Hebrews 11:21. If you read the story of Jacob in Genesis, particularly chapter 32, you will find the story of how Jacob became lame after wrestling with what he thought was a man, but was actually God (32:22-32). During the struggle, Jacob's hip was put out of joint and he would have walked with a limp from then on, which would be a reminder to him and everyone who met him of his encounter with God.

It's probably as a result of this that Jacob needed a staff (or walking stick) for support in his old age.

Some people in the Bible are described as lifting their hands in prayer or falling on their face before God in worship. I am not aware of anyone in the Bible who knelt in prayer, but I'm sure someone out there will correct me if I'm wrong!
