Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A T&A Procedure is actually what?

Answer: Tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy

A T&A is a very common ENT procedure.
2. If you were wearing a "space suit" in the O.R., what type of case would you most likely be doing?

Answer: Orthopedic case

Because of the high risk for infections, a lot of total joint replacement surgeries are done while wearing a space suit. While it sounds like an astronaut wardrobe, it is actually just a protective suit which has its own air filtration system.
3. A lap appy is what?

Answer: Laparascopic removal of the appendix

A Laparoscopic Appendectomy. A camera is inserted into the abdomen through a small incision and helps to remove the appendix. It is a less invasive procedure than the standard open appendectomy.
4. In the open heart room you will often see the word TEE attached to a cardiac bypass being scheduled. What does this mean?

Answer: The surgeon wants a trans esophageal echo study during the procedure

Two of these answers were absurd, and the endarterectomy catheter was made up.
5. A surgery that enters the skull is called a?

Answer: craniotomy

Neurosurgery was almost a trick answer, but neurosurgery is the type of surgery that deals with the craniotomy.
6. A neurosurgeon can treat carpal tunnel disorder.

Answer: True

Interestingly enough, it is also treated by general surgeons, plastic surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and others...
7. Historically, hand surgeons were wary of using epinephrine in their local anesthetic. Why is this?

Answer: It was believed to cause vasoconstriction in the small blood vessels and lead to tissue necrosis and loss of a finger.

Surgeons operating on all extremities were very wary of using epinephrine for this reason. More recent research has shown that it is not as risky as originally thought.
8. What is a TVT?

Answer: A type of urological equipment.

A TVT is used to fix stress incontinence in women. These are used by urologists and some specialized OB/GYN surgeons.
9. When doing a knee joint replacement it is possible to replace one femoral condyle and not the other.

Answer: True

This is called a unicompartmental knee replacement. I personally think this is just a temporary fix and the patient will eventually need a total knee arthroplasty.
10. The highest level ranking for a trauma center in the United States is a level what?

Answer: Level 1

A level-1 trauma center is the most equipped to handle serious injury and/or more complicated cases.
