Question 1 of 10
1. This radiographic examination is one of the most widely known. It is an examination of the large intestine; a small plastic tube is inserted into the rectum and a white fluid is run into the bowel under fluoroscopy. Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Before having this scan done you are asked a series of questions. One important question is whether or not you have a pacemaker. What scan would you be going for? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. This is an examination to look at the biliary tree. A long, thin flexible camera is placed down the oesophagus into the duodenum. Contrast is then injected into the common bile duct. What is this procedure called? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. This is one of the more unusual examinations and also a bit perverse coming to think about it. Again a rubber tube is placed into the rectum and a thick barium paste is injected into the rectum. X-rays are then taken as the patient is sitting on a bedpan and asked to poo. Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. This procedure is done to check the state of the tear duct. A small needle is placed into the tear duct and then a contrast media is injected into the tear duct. Pictures are then taken using digital subtraction. Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Which diagnostic scan gives some of the highest radiation doses in diagnostic radiography? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. This is the most common (and most tedious) examination performed in an X-ray department. Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. What is the name for a tomographic X-ray of the teeth, mandible and maxilla? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Not all radiography is performed in the X-ray department. A radiographer also works a great deal in the operating theatre. One orthopaedic operation, called a DHS, would be impossible to perform without the help of a radiographer. Now do you know what DHS actually stands for? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. When performing examinations in plain radiography that require a high exposure factor a grid is used. What is the purpose of this grid? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This radiographic examination is one of the most widely known. It is an examination of the large intestine; a small plastic tube is inserted into the rectum and a white fluid is run into the bowel under fluoroscopy.

Answer: Barium Enema

Air is also pumped into the bowel thus making it a double contrast study, as the barium shows up white under x-rays and the air shows as black.
2. Before having this scan done you are asked a series of questions. One important question is whether or not you have a pacemaker. What scan would you be going for?

Answer: MRI

If you did happen to go into an MRI scanner with a pacemaker it would stop working immediately and you would likely have a heart attack.
3. This is an examination to look at the biliary tree. A long, thin flexible camera is placed down the oesophagus into the duodenum. Contrast is then injected into the common bile duct. What is this procedure called?

Answer: ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde CholangioPancreatogram)

This is a very unpleasant thing to have done as the patient is still awake as they need to swallow the camera down. As you would guess this causes lots of gagging and retching.
4. This is one of the more unusual examinations and also a bit perverse coming to think about it. Again a rubber tube is placed into the rectum and a thick barium paste is injected into the rectum. X-rays are then taken as the patient is sitting on a bedpan and asked to poo.

Answer: Defecating proctogram

This has to be the most humiliating examination possible. I always feel sorry for the poor people who have to go through it.
5. This procedure is done to check the state of the tear duct. A small needle is placed into the tear duct and then a contrast media is injected into the tear duct. Pictures are then taken using digital subtraction.

Answer: Dacrocystogram

Sometimes if there is a blockage a small balloon is used to stretch the stricture and open the duct or a small stent can be inserted.
6. Which diagnostic scan gives some of the highest radiation doses in diagnostic radiography?

Answer: CT scan

MRI and ultrasound do not actually involve any kind of ionizing radiation.
7. This is the most common (and most tedious) examination performed in an X-ray department.

Answer: Chest X-ray

I'm not sure of the actual statistic but at least one third of radiographic examinations performed are chest X-rays.
8. What is the name for a tomographic X-ray of the teeth, mandible and maxilla?

Answer: O.P.G

O.P.G actually stands for Orthopantomography. I hope that clears things up!
9. Not all radiography is performed in the X-ray department. A radiographer also works a great deal in the operating theatre. One orthopaedic operation, called a DHS, would be impossible to perform without the help of a radiographer. Now do you know what DHS actually stands for?

Answer: Dynamic Hip Screw

These are normally performed on older patients who have broken their neck of femur (NOF). The screw holds it in place so that it can heal.
10. When performing examinations in plain radiography that require a high exposure factor a grid is used. What is the purpose of this grid?

Answer: Improves image quality by reducing scatter

Using a grid does increase the quality of the image by reducing scattered radiation; unfortunately though it does increase the dose to the patient.
