Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which year were Dundee United founded, and what was their original name?

Answer: 1909 as Dundee Hibernian

Dundee Hibernian were founded by Irishmen in 1909, following in the tradition of Cetlic FC in Glasgow and Hibernian FC in Edinburgh. In 1923, new owners of the club decided to change the team's name to Dundee United to appeal to a bigger fanbase.
2. What has been Dundee United's home stadium throughout their existence?

Answer: Tannadice Park

Dundee United have played home games at Tannadice Park since their formation. The stadium is named after its location on Tannadice Street and is located just 200 yards from Dens Park, home ground of their local rivals Dundee F.C. A record crowd of 28,000 watched United play Barcelona in 1966, but redevelopment early in the 21st century left the ground with an all-seated capacity of 14,223.
3. What have been Dundee United's first-choice colours since 1969?

Answer: Tangerine & Black

Dundee Hibernian wore green and white strips. When the club was rebranded as Dundee United, black and white became their first choice colours. In 1969, the club decided on a complete change, and tangerine shirts were adopted. These have been accompanied by either black or tangerine shorts ever since.
4. Until the 1960s, Dundee United had spent most of their existence in the second tier of Scottish football. Manager Jerry Kerr established them as a top flight club throughout that decade, but their fortunes soared when which man took over the managerial hot seat in 1971?

Answer: Jim McLean

Jim McLean had been a coach up the road at Dens Park (home ground of local rivals Dundee F.C.), until he took over as manager of Dundee United. Over the next 22 seasons, he led United through what became the club's "golden era" when they regularly vied for top honours both domestically and in Europe.
5. Dundee United finally won their first major honour when they won the League Cup in 1979-80, and retained the trophy the following season. Both of their final victories, against Aberdeen and Dundee, came at which venue?

Answer: Dens Park

The original game of the 1979-80 Scottish League Cup final took place, as is traditional, at Hampden Park. After the game finished goalless in front of a disappointing crowd, both clubs agreed that the replay would take place at Dens Park in Dundee. United won the replay 3-0 to lift their first major piece of silverware. Twelve months later, they were back in the final, this time against neighbours Dundee. Rather than playing the game in Glasgow, the clubs agreed to toss a coin for choice of venue. Dundee won, so the game took place at Dens Park, and it was United who triumphed, again by a 3-0 scoreline.
6. Season 1982-83 saw Dundee United crowned champions of Scotland for the first time. Who top scored for the club with 22 league goals to help them achieve their greatest success?

Answer: Davie Dodds

Davie Dodds was top scorer for Dundee United in their championship winning season of 1982-83 with 22 goals, with Eamonn Bannon contributing 16. The league title was decided on the final day of the season, and once again it was Dens Park, home of rivals Dundee, which would see the club lift the silverware. Milne and Bannon scored their goals in a 2-1 win in front of 25,000 fans.
7. Dundee United's title success in 1983 saw them qualify for the 1983-84 European Champions Cup, where they had an amazing run all the way to the semi-finals. Which Italian club denied them a place in the final in somewhat controversial fashion?

Answer: Roma

Dundee United defeated Hamrun Spartans of Malta, Standard Liege of Belgium and Austrian champions Rapid Vienna to reach the semi-finals of the 1983-84 European Cup. They were drawn to face Italian champions Roma, and won the first leg in Scotland 2-0. The second leg in Rome ended in a 0-3 defeat, after the Roma president bribed the German referee before the match.
8. What is Dundee United's nickname?

Answer: The Terrors

Dundee United, are nicknamed the Terrors, an abbreviated version of the alliterative Tangerine Terrors. Another, unofficial, nickname is Arabs, although this name usually refers to the club's fans rather than the club itself.
9. In 1987, Dundee United reached the final of a major European competition for the first time in their history. Which team defeated them in the UEFA Cup final?

Answer: IFK Gothenburg

In season 1986-87, Dundee United went on a incredible run in the UEFA Cup. Thet defeated Lens of France, Uni Craiova of Romania, Hajduk Split of Yugoslavia, Spanish giants Barcelona and Germans Borussia Monchengladbach to reach the final. They faced Sweden's IFK Gothenborg in a two-legged final.

The first leg in Sweden resulted in a 0-1 defeat, leaving everything to play for at Tannadice in the second leg. Gothenburg took an early lead in Dundee, and, although John Clark leveled things in the second half, the Swedes held on for a 2-1 aggregate win.
10. The one domestic trophy to elude Dundee United during their "golden era" of the 1980s was the Scottish F.A. Cup. They finally got their hands on it in 1994 when they defeated Rangers 1-0 in the final. Who was their manager that season who led them to victory?

Answer: Ivan Golac

Ivan Golac, from Yugoslavia, had replaced legendary manager Jim Mcean in the Tannadice hotseat in 1993. In his first season in charge, he led them to the Scottish Cup final at Hampden, where they were very much underdogs against champions Rangers. Having lost all six of their previous final appearances, the smart money was on United to come up short again, but they bucked the odds with a 1-0 victory, Craig Brewster scoring the game's only goal.
