Sanchez defeated Felix Trinidad Sr. (father of Puerto Rican superfighter, three division titist Felix Trinidad) by knockout in five rounds in 1979. Sanchez was preparing to defend his championship for the 10th time against his friend Juan Laporte. Sanchez earlier successfully defended his belt against Laporte winning a 15 round decision in El Paso Texas 13 December 1980.

Monterrey Mexico born Clemente Sanchez knocked out Japan's Kuniaki Shibata 19 May 1972, Tokyo Japan in the third round to win the WBC featherweight title. He then lost his very next bout, a 10-round non title bout to Enrique Garcia a fighter with a 5-4-1 record.

His next bout would be a title defense against Cuba born Spain based Jose Legra. Sanchez after several attempts could not make the 126 limit (he weighted 129-lbs) and forfited the championship. The bout was allowed to take place anyway. If Sanchez won, the title would be declared vacant, However, if Legra (Who weighted 123 lbs) won, he would recieve the championship.

He stopped Sanchez in the 10th round of their scheduled 15 rounder. Sanchez, after a one year hiatus fought two more years.

He lost the final bout of his career in 1975 and retired at the age of 28. Three years later (in 1978) he passed away. He was only 31 years old.
