Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1982, Duk-koo Kim died four days after being carried out of the ring in a coma after losing a WBA lightweight title fight. Who was his opponent?

Answer: Ray Mancini

Duk-koo Kim was a South Korean boxer, who turned professional in 1978 after a respectable amateur career. In 1982, he won the Orient and Pacific Boxing Federation lightweight title, and in November of that year was the number one contender for Ray Mancini's title. Prior to the fight he had 12 straight wins.

It was only his second fight outside South Korea, and he had never fought anyone of Mancini's calibre before. He took heavy blows in round 13, and in the 14th Mancini knocked Kim into the ropes, and his head hit the canvas.

He was so groggy the fight was stopped, with Mancini winning on a TKO. Minutes after the end of the fight he collapsed in the ring and was rushed to hospital, where emergency brain surgery was performed, but he died 3 days later.

He was only 23. After this incident, World Championship bouts were cut from 15 to 12 rounds.
2. In 1947, Jimmy Doyle died in hospital after losing a world title fight to Sugar Ray Robinson. At which weight class did he fight?

Answer: Welterweight

Jimmy Doyle made his professional debut in 1941, and by 1947 had won 43 of his 52 fights. He was seriously out-classed by Sugar Ray Robinson, who took every round up to the sixth, when Doyle did manage to land some telling punches that staggered the champion. Robinson came back with a solid left hook that knocked Doyle to the canvas where he landed heavily, hitting his head, and failing to beat the count.

He was immediately taken to hospital, but he never regained consciousness and died a few hours later aged only 22.

He had suffered a severe concussion in a fight the year before, but it was never certain whether or not this was a contributory factor.
3. Which Welsh boxer, nicknamed "The Matchstick Man", died in November 1980?

Answer: Johnny Owen

Johnny Owen started boxing when he was eight years old. In his amateur career he won 106 bouts out of 124, and represented Wales 17 times, winning 15 of those fights. His first professional fight was in September 1976, and after only six fights he won the Welsh bantamweight title.

This was quickly followed by the British title, and the Commonwealth title followed in 1978. By 1979, he had added the European title to the haul and was ready to fight for the World Championship. In September 1980, he fought Lupe Pintor for the world title.

After 9 rounds he was ahead on points, but in round 12, Pintor landed a knockout blow which put Johnny Owen into a coma. He never regained consciousness and died in a Los Angeles hospital in November 1980 at aged 24.
4. Middleweight Angelo Jacopucci died after fighting Alan Minter for which title?

Answer: European

He was rushed to hospital, but lapsed into a coma and died the next day. Answer: Max Baer

Max Baer was the father of actor Max Baer Jnr. known to millions as Jethro Bodine of the "Beverly Hillbillies". In the second round, Campbell put Baer on the canvas, and thinking he was taking a count, turned towards his corner, but Baer rose swiftly and caught him with a head shot.

He died the next day. Baer was devastated and and did not fight again for just over a year.

He was never over-popular with the British public, and became less so when he defeated people's favorite Henry Cooper, a match which many felt Cooper had won.
10. Up and coming young boxer Bradley Stone died after a fight against Richie Wenton for which vacant British title?

Answer: Super Bantamweight
