1. Who was the first player to play for the Philadelphia Phillies franchise and have the franchise retire his number?

Answer: Robin Roberts

Roberts and Carlton were both Phillie pitchers who had their numbers retired. Robin had his 36 retired in 1962, then Steve's 32 in 1989. Both are Hall of Fame members.
2. Who was the first Detroit Tiger pitcher to win 30 games in a season?

Answer: Denny McLain

It took the franchise all its 68 seasons before someone finally won 30 from the mound. McLain had his season in 1968 for the Tigers by going 31-6. He won the AL MVP and AL Cy Young Award for his efforts.
3. Which of the following Hall of Fame pitchers gave up a home run to the very-first batter that he faced in professional baseball?

Answer: Bob Gibson

It was April 15, 1959, when Gibson of the Cardinals embarrassed himself by giving it up to Jim Baxes of the Dodgers. It was Baxes only season in the big leagues, and he hit only two home runs in a Dodger uniform. Gibson averaged giving up only one home run in every 15 innings in his career.
4. Who was the first National League player to hit for the cycle in one game?

Answer: Curry Foley

They all hit for the cycle in the National League, but it was Foley who did it first with the Buffalo Bisons in 1882. He played for only five seasons and retired in 1883. Foley's season high was only 104 hits in 1882.
5. Which of these pre-1900 franchises that went defunct, did not win a league pennant?

Answer: Buffalo Bisons

The Bisons existed in the National League from 1879-1885. Their best finish was only a third in 1884. The Wolverines were in the National League from 1881-1888. The won the NL pennant in 1887. The Grays existed in the NL from 1878-1885. They won two NL pennants while in the league.

The Maroons won the Union Association pennant in their only season in the league in 1884, before jumping ship to the National League in 1885.

Answer: Walter Johnson

Johnson was a career Washington Senator from 1907-1927. Walter won two MVPs and threw three Triple Crowns in his career. His three-pitch innings came in 1911, 1913, 1915, and 1917. Johnson was a Hall of Fame inductee in 1936.
7. Who was the first Pittsburgh Pirate to win a MVP Award?

Answer: Paul Waner

Paul played most of his 20 seasons in Pittsburgh, and shared the Pittsburgh outfield with brother Lloyd. He won the MVP in 1927 over Cardinal Frankie Frisch. Paul was also the runner-up MVP in 1934 to Cardinal Dizzy Dean. Waner was a 1952 hall inductee.
8. Who was the first American League pitcher to give up 400 hits in a season?

Answer: Joe McGinnity

Joe was a Baltimore Oriole in the new American League in 1901. He gave up 412 hits in the season. He averaged 328 hits per season in his 10-season career. The Orioles franchise later became the New York Yankees.
9. Who was the first player in Major League history to hit for the cycle three times in their career?

Answer: Bob Meusel

Meusel played 10 of his 11 seasons with the Yankees. He hit for the cycle in 1921, 1922, and 1928. Bob shared the outfield with Earle Combs and Babe Ruth. Babe Herman of the National League also hit for the cycle three times, twice with the Brooklyn Robins in 1931, and once with the Cubs in 1933.
10. Who was the first player in Major League history to bat for a Triple Crown twice?

Answer: Rogers Hornsby

Hornsby was a Cardinal most of his career. His Triple Crowns came in 1922 and 1925. Although the National League did not present a MVP Award in 1922, Hornsby won a MVP in 1925 and 1929. He batted over .400 three times in his career. He also batted .424 in 1924 along with 25 home runs, but finished second in the MVP to Brooklyn's pitcher Dazzy Vance, who went 28-6 in the season.
