Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I shined during my career with the Athletics and Yankees. In 1974, I won the American League Cy Young by going 25-12. Arbitration and free agency brought me to the Yankees for the 1975 season. Who am I?

Answer: Jim "Catfish" Hunter

After the Oakland Athletics won three consecutive World Series from 1972-1974, A's owner Charles O. Finley didn't want to pay Hunter for what he was worth. For the Yankees in 1975, Jim 'Catfish' Hunter went 25-12, good enough for a runner-up to the Cy Young.
2. This player retired with 399 career home runs in 2004. He made his name mostly in a Rockies uniform. Who was this slugger that had the nickname 'Big Cat'?

Answer: Andres Galarraga

After spending his first seven seasons as an Expo, then one with the Cardinals, Andres blossomed into a feared slugger with the Rockies beginning in 1993. Galarraga's season home run high was 47 in 1993.
3. This pitcher had some form of cat nickname. In 1959, he threw 12 perfect innings of baseball, then lost the game in the 13th. He was never credited with any form of a perfect game. Who was he?

Answer: Harvey Haddix

The others listed all died in 1950. Harvey Haddix's nickname was 'Kitten'. May 26, 1959, saw his extraordinary 12 perfect innings go awry. Ironically, he finished the season with a record of 12-12.
4. Don Hoak played for 11 seasons mostly with the Pirates and went to two World Series. What was this third baseman's nickname who retired in 1964?

Answer: Tiger

The 1957 all-star won two World Series rings, one with the Brooklyn Dodgers and the other with the Pirates. He led the NL in doubles with 39 in 1957 also.
5. This player had the honor of playing with the great Cy Young in his only season of baseball. Although he appeared in only two games in the 1895 Cleveland Spider season, his name has always stuck out. Who was this outfielder?

Answer: Pussy Tebeau

Tebeau had six career at-bats in his only season, getting three singles for his .500 batting average. He can say that he struck out only one time in his career. He died at the age of 80 in 1950.
6. I spent my entire pitching career with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1940-1953. My nickname was 'Harry the Cat'. I went to three World Series with a win-loss record of 4-1. I died at the age of 89 in 2004. Who am I?

Answer: Harry Brecheen

The others listed never played for the Cardinals. Brecheen's finest season was in 1948 when he went 20-7. Had the Cy Young award been handed out in those days (it began in 1956), he would have been in the running for the award.
7. This left-handed pitcher made his name for the Minnesota Twins where he spent most of his 25-season career. His greatest season was in 1966 when he went 25-13. Who was this pitcher nicknamed 'Kitty'?

Answer: Jim Kaat

Kaat went 1-7 with the Senators in his first two seasons before moving to Minnesota. In 1961 during his first season with the Twins, he went 9-17. He didn't have another losing season for 10 years after that. His career record was 283-237.
8. This home run hitter nicknamed 'The Big Cat' made his name in New York, both with the Giants and Yankees. He hit 51 home runs in 1947. Who was this first baseman?

Answer: Johnny Mize

The others listed had not started their big league careers yet in 1947. The Big Cat played for 15 seasons and retired in 1953 with 359 home runs. Mize went to five World Series with the Yankees and hit three home runs in the 1952 series against the Dodgers.
9. The Sterling cat is a silver long-haired chinchilla cat, and has some characteristics to the Persian. Which 'Sterling' pitched for four teams from 1992-2004, and retired as a San Diego Padre?

Answer: Sterling Hitchcock

Hitchcock was a starting pitcher most of his career. His finest season could pull only a 13-9 season with the Mariners in 1996. He had one World Series victory with the Yankees in 2001.
10. Which of the following home run kings was nicknamed 'Snow Cat'?

Answer: None listed

Mays had the nickname of 'Say Hey', Ruth had many nicknames but 'The Sultan of Swat' and 'Bambino' were his most famous, and Ted Williams had the nickname of 'The Splendid Splinter' amongst others. They all retired with over 500 home runs in their career.
