Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team never had a winning record in a season during the 2000s decade?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

The others all went to two World Series in the decade. The Orioles experienced four winning seasons in the 1990s, their last being in 1997 with a 98-64 record. Their best season in the 2000s decade was 78-84 in 2004.
2. The San Francisco Giants won the 2010 World Series four games to one over the Texas Rangers. Which was the only game that the Rangers won?

Answer: Game three

After losing 11-7 and 9-0 in games one and two, the Rangers came alive in game three in a 4-2 win. That would be the Rangers' only spark in the series, but had a great 2010 season in their first-ever World Series appearance.
3. The White Sox went to five World Series in the 20th century. Where did this team play their home games during the entire century?

Answer: Chicago

The White Sox joined the new American League in 1901. They were only one of two American League teams (Detroit Tigers) who never moved or changed their name in the century. Chicago first found the World Series in 1906 in a four games to two win over the crosstown Chicago Cubs, who won 116 games in the season.

They would not see another World Series title in the century, but would skunk the Houston Astros four games to none in 2005.
4. In the 2000s decade, manager Bobby Cox won two Manager of the Year awards. Which manager won the award in both the American and National League during the decade?

Answer: Lou Piniella

Lou took the 2001 Mariners to win 116 games and won the AL Award, but would lose in the ALCS to the Yankees. He would later take the Cubs to the NL Central crown in 2008 and win another award, but lost the NLDS to the Dodgers. That was Piniella's third Manager of the Year Award. His first came in 1995 with the Mariners.
5. Which team did Babe Ruth retire his baseball career with in 1935?

Answer: Boston Braves

Ruth was sold to the Boston Red Sox in 1914 as a pitcher. Then the historical owner Howard Frazee sold Ruth to the Yankees in January 1920. Ruth hit more than 50 home runs in a season four times with the Yankees. In the Babe's quest to manage a team, he joined the Boston Braves in the attempt, but it was futile.

He hit six home runs for the Braves in his final season, and three were in one game in 1935. He retired with a then-record of 714 career home runs.
6. Which team lost 100+ games in each of four seasons during the 2000s decade?

Answer: Kansas City Royals

The Royals franchise experienced their first 100-game losing season in 2002. They would see three more in 2004, 2005, and 2006.
7. Which 1962 National League expansion team had a handgun as part of their official team's logo?

Answer: Houston

The Houston franchise began under the helm of manager Harry Craft in 1962. The team was known as the Houston Colt .45s, with a Colt handgun and a baseball in the foreground of the state of Texas. In 1965, they changed their team name to the Astros, and the gun logo was then shot dead.

The new logo had a red circle background with the word Astros below a caricature of the Houston Astrodome.
8. From 2001-2004, the Giants' Barry Bonds won four consecutive National League MVP awards. Who broke his streak by winning it in 2005?

Answer: Albert Pujols

Pujols of the Cardinals finally got his due in this fifth season. He had finished in the top four, seeking the MVP in his four previous seasons. Albert won his first MVP in 2005 over runner-up Andruw Jones of the Braves. The Cardinal fans watched Pujols hit 30+ home runs for the fifth time, score 100+ runs, and have over 100 RBIs each season also. Albert did all this while batting over .300 in each season also.
9. Which of these Hall of Fame greats was not inducted into the Hall of Fame within one year after they played their final game?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Ruth retired in 1935, and was one of the first five inducted into the hall in 1936. Gehrig stepped down due to illness in 1939, and was voted into the hall by special election in the same year. Clemente was a Pittsburgh Pirate who was killed after the 1972 season in a plane crash.

He was inducted in 1973 by special election also. Koufax, a Dodger pitching great who ruled most of the 1960s in the National League, retired in 1966. He had to wait his minimum requirement of six years after retirement to be inducted.

He was inducted in 1972.
10. Which of these Hall of Famers never wore the number 44 in their career?

Answer: Willie Mays

Mays played 20 seasons with the Giants and two with the Mets, retiring in 1973. In his first season in 1951, Willie wore the number 14 before switching to the number 24. He was Rookie of the Year in 1951, then later won two NL MVP awards. Mays retired with 660 home runs, with his very first home run coming off future Hall of Fame pitcher Warren Spahn of the Braves. Willie also appeared in 24 All-Star games. Aaron wore 44 with the Braves, McCovey with the Giants, and Jackson with the Angels.
