Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2007, the Boston Red Sox won their second World Series in four seasons, this time against the Colorado Rockies. Which Red Sox player was the series MVP?

Answer: Mike Lowell

The others were all Baltimore Orioles. Boston didn't really have anyone that stood out, but had a well-balanced roster in the series. Lowell, the third baseman, batted .400 and had six hits in the four game sweep of the Rockies.
2. Who was the first left-hander to hit 600 career home runs?

Answer: Babe Ruth

The others all batted right-handed. The Babe had that familiar left-handed swing while wearing the number three. He passed the 600-mark in 1931, then retired with 714 in 1935 as a Boston Brave.
3. From 1996-2007, Yankee manager Joe Torre took the team to the playoffs in every season. Which team's uniform did he change to for 2008?

Answer: Dodgers

Torre managed all the teams listed before he took the helm of the Yankees in 1996. He also played for those other three teams until he retired as a player in 1977. Joe took the Yankees to six AL pennants while winning four World Series.
4. The New York Mets franchise began in 1962. They moved into their new stadium in 1964, and played in it for over 45 seasons. In 2008, they were still in this ballpark. Which park was it?

Answer: Shea Stadium

Shea was built with a lot of foul territory, not common to other ballparks. Shea played host to the World Series winning Mets in 1969 against the Orioles, then again in 1986 against the Red Sox.
5. In 1939, the streak of the "Iron Horse", 2130 consecutive games played finally came to an end. The "Iron Horse" was Lou Gehrig. Which Yankee replaced him at first base to see Gehrig's streak come to an end?

Answer: Babe Dahlgren

The others were all pitchers, did not begin their careers until the 1960s, none ever played first base, and none played for the Yankees. Babe Dahlgren came to the Yankees in 1937, but played in only one game. In 1938, Dahlgren played in less than 30 games, and still only one at first base.

When Gehrig's streak was terminated, Dahlgren finished out 144 games in the 1939 season. In the 1939 series, Dahlgren hit one home run to help the Yankees win the World Series against the Reds. From Wally Pipp, who Gehrig replaced, to Babe Dahlgren who replaced Gehrig, there were no greater Yankee players than Gehrig in-between at any position. Gehrig died two years later.
6. I was the first pitcher to win 400 games in a career. When I reached number 500, who would have thought my numbers would probably never be reached by anyone else? I retired in 1911. I was so great that Major League Baseball named an award after me. Dodger Don Newcombe won the first presentation in 1956, but I died in 1955 and didn't see it. Who am I?

Answer: Cy Young

The others weren't born until the 1940s. Young's 500th career win came as a Cleveland Indian in 1910. He retired with 511. His career began in Cleveland, but playing for the National League Spiders from 1890-1898. Young was inducted into the Hall of Fame in the second round of inductions in 1937.

The Cy Young Award is presented in each season, to the most outstanding pitcher in each league.
7. Casey Stengel managed the Brooklyn Dodgers and Boston Braves for nine seasons, but never finished better than fifth place in the league. All that would change when he took over the Yankees in 1949. He would take them to 10 World Series in 12 seasons. What an absolute high that Casey had until 1960. Then the trap door would open, and his new National League team would lose 100 games in four consecutive seasons. Which team was this that ended Stengel's managing career?

Answer: New York Mets

The other teams didn't exist yet. Casey won seven World Series titles with the Yankees. The Mets' franchise began in 1962. In five of their first six seasons, they topped losing 100 games. They won their first World Series in 1969. Casey died in 1975.
8. How many Major League teams in 2007 won 100 or more games in the season?

Answer: 0

2007 was still a 162-game season which began in 1961, extended from a 154-game season. In a very balanced Major League season, only the Red Sox and Indians had a league-leading 96 wins, and the National League did not have a team win over 90 games.
9. The first World Series occurred in which year?

Answer: 1903

The first series pitted the Boston Americans against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Jimmy Sebring of Pittsburgh hit the first World Series home run in history, Deacon Phillippe threw the very first win, and the Pirates won the very first game. Boston won the series five games to three, in the best of a nine game format, with pitchers Bill Dinneen and Cy Young winning the five games.
10. Who was the only American Leaguer in 2007 hit more than 50 home runs?

Answer: Alex Rodriguez

All the others retired in the 1990s. A-Rod of the Yankees hit 54 in 2007. After 14 seasons, Rodriguez had already joined the 500 Home Run Club. Runner-up for home run title in 2007 were Carlos Pena of Tampa Bay who hit 46, and David Ortiz of Boston who hit 35. Prince Fielder of the Brewers was the only National Leaguer to hit 50 in the season.
