Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Whos was the multi Cy Young pitcher who began his career in the farm system at Houston Astros, was drafted by the Florida Marlins with the 2nd pick of the 1999 Rule 5 draft, and then immediately traded to Minnesota?

Answer: Johan Santana

Johan Santana almost left baseball entirely after being chosen to pitch instead of playing the outfield. After being taken by the Marlins in the 1999 Rule 5 draft and then traded to the Twins, his first year in the majors resulted in a 6.49 ERA over 86 innings. A few Cy Youngs, All Star nominations, MLB triple crown and a no hitter later, and I'd say it was a pretty good trade.
2. He was the number 1 overall draft pick in 1999 by the Devil Rays, but was left unprotected due to numerous drug and alcohol problems. He was selected by the Cubs who immediately traded his rights to the Reds. Who is this player?

Answer: Josh Hamilton

Josh Hamilton did not debut until 2007 despite being drafted 1st overall in 1999. Hamilton was traded the next season to the Rangers where he racked up numerous All-Star appearances, Silver Slugger awards an AL MVP, ALCS MVP, and a historic Home Run Derby performance.
3. He was on five different rosters in 2004. He ended the season where he was originally drafted in Pittsburgh. This slugger was the first to have consecutive Home Run titles since Mark McGwire in 1998-1999. who is this player?

Answer: Jose Bautista

Jose Bautista was drafted by the Pirates in 2000. His rookie season was 2004, when he was selected in the Rule 5 draft by the Baltimore Orioles, where he made his debut on April 4th of 2004. On June 3rd he was claimed off of waivers by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and later traded to the Kansas City Royals on June 28th. Two days later he was shipped to the New York Mets and in the same day sent back to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Jose Bautista found his Home Run groove in Toronto after being traded from Pittsburgh in 2008 and Bautista won back to back Home Run titles in 2010-2011 along with All Star appearances and a Home Run Derby participation.

6. This player was originally drafted by the Dodgers in 1999, and selected in the Rule 5 draft twice, once by the Padres in 2002, and after being returned to LA, was drafted again by the Phillies in 2005. Who is this Gold Glove All Star Outfielder?

Answer: Shane Victorino

Shane Victorino, "The Flyin Hawaiian" or "The Pineapple Express" was almost returned to the Dodgers from the Phillies, however the Dodgers declined him so he was outrighted to the Phillies minor league system. 7. This All Star reliever was drafted by the Twins in the 2002 draft, but spent the next few years playing in the Padres and Devil Rays system until being selected in the 2007 Rule 5 Draft by the Pirates. Who is this All-Star reliever?

Answer: Alexi Ogando

Alexi Ogando has had a lot of success as a starter and as a reliever for the Texas Rangers and was an All Star in 2011. The normal penalty for the human trafficking (which was unfortunately very common for latin ballplayers) was a one year ban and the ability to reapply the following year.
