Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first match of the second round weekend was France against Scotland. For the twentieth time, a pair of brothers turned out together (the forty-fifth set of brothers to represent Scotland). Max Evans was joined by his brother, Thom. What happened to Thom in the match?

Answer: He scored Scotland's only try

Once voted the twelfth most eligible man in Scotland, Thom Evans played for boyband Twen2y4Se7en (don't blame me for the spelling!), who supported Westlife and Boyzone on tour. On sixty-nine minutes, Thom scored a try on his debut, bringing Scotland back into the game.
2. In the France versus Scotland match, who opened the score on twenty-two minutes?

Answer: Lionel Beauxis

All the answers scored during the game, but having missed a penalty on thirteen minutes, Lionel Beauxis made amends after Kelly Brown failed to roll away from French hooker Szarzewski. (A harsh decision)
3. Who, on thirty-five minutes of the France v Scotland game, made, in the words of the BBC website, a 'right sclaff' of a penalty attempt?

Answer: Lionel Beauxis

I had never come across the word 'sclaff' before, so I am indebted to 'thefreedictionary.com' for the information that it means when you strike the ground or drag the club before hitting a golf ball, or strike any ball the same way. Beauxis made amends less than two minutes later, kicking a penalty after being high-tackled by John Barclay. Of the wrong answers, Romain Millo-Chluski does not take kicks, being the French number 5.
4. Was Scotland's only try in the match against France successfully converted?

Answer: Yes

Chris Paterson is often described as 'the best kicker in the world', and holds the record for most caps and points for Scotland. He successfully converted Scotland's only try only four minutes after replacing Phil Godman.
5. Who scored France's only try in the France v Scotland match?

Answer: Fulgence Ouedraogo

France's try was very controversial, Scotland believing (and replays seeming to confirm) that the pass from Medard to Ouedraogo had been forward. However, the referee gave the try and the final score showed that France had beaten Scotland 22-13.
6. The second match in round two was Wales against England. England went into the match as underdogs following their unconvincing victory against Italy. Who opened the scoring?

Answer: Stephen Jones - Wales

Wales started at speed and, England having killed the ball illegally, Stephen Jones kicked the first penalty points after only four minutes.
7. Against Italy in round one, England had to play twenty minutes with only 14 men because two players had been sin-binned. In the Wales v England match, how many yellow cards were given and to which team?

Answer: Two - England

Both Mike Tindall and Andy Goode were sin-binned in this match, Mike Tindall for not rolling away after a tackle and Andy Goode for killing the ball. The BBC website claimed that England were so worried about their disciplinary problems that they had been practising with fourteen men all week. If this was true, it paid off, as Paul Sackey scored a try with Tindall off the field!
8. How many points did Wales score against England in their match before England troubled the scorers?

Answer: 9

Wales were nine points to nil after twenty minutes, until Paul Sackey scored a try, bringing England back into the game at 9-5. Wales' nine points were scored by penalties from Stephen Jones (twice) and Leigh Halfpenny (once).
9. Who scored the only drop goal of the game between Wales and England?

Answer: Andy Goode

After a rather unconvincing attempt by England's Delon Armitage after less than a minute, the only drop goal was scored by Andy Goode just under the half-hour, bringing England to within one point of Wales.
10. In the Wales against England match, who scored the most tries, and who won?

Answer: England, Wales

Wales only scored one try (though Leigh Halfpenny) and England scored two (Paul Sackey and Delon Armitage). However, Stephen Jones and Leigh Halfpenny scored six penalties (out of seven attempted) and Wales had completed their third consecutive victory over England 23-15.
11. The third match of the second round was Italy against Ireland. Ireland, having beaten France, started as massive favourites. What happened in the first minute?

Answer: Italy had a player sin-binned

With less than a minute gone, Italy full-back Andrea Masi clotheslined (stuck out an arm at neck height, catching the opposing player around the throat - extremely dangerous) Rob Kearney. Ten minutes on the bench for Masi.
12. Who scored the first points in the Italy v Ireland match and for whom?

Answer: Luke McLean, Italy

Luke McLean is originally from Australia and Paul Griffen from New Zealand, but they both play for Italy. Paul Griffen plays scrum-half (except when Nick Mallett experiments with Mauro Bergamasco!) and Luke McLean fly-half. Following Ireland player David Wallace being penalised for not rolling away after a tackle, Luke McLean slotted over the penalty to give Italy an unexpected lead.
13. In the Italy v Ireland match which, to be quite honest, was fairly turgid, there was one magnificent run by a player from their own 22; it ended in a try. Who scored it?

Answer: Tommy Bowe

Tommy Bowe intercepted a wayward pass between Italian centres Gonzalo Canale and Mirco Bergamasco and ran a good 60m to score a great try, which was converted by Ronan O'Gara.
14. Was Ireland fly-half, Ronan O'Gara, given a yellow card during the match against Italy?

Answer: Yes

Having had a kick charged down by Gonzalo Canale, Ronan O'Gara decided to tackle Canale without the ball. Ronan O'Gara was promptly sin-binned, but Luke McLean missed the ensuing penalty.
15. How many tries did Ireland score against Italy?

Answer: 5

Ireland scored five tries against Italy, from David Wallace, a brace from Luke Fitzgerald, one from Brian O'Driscoll and one from Tommy Bowe. Running out winners by 38-15, Ireland went to the top of the Six Nations table, from Wales, England, France, Scotland and Italy.
