Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ireland, having been beaten by France, could no longer win the Grand Slam (only awarded to the team that beats the other five). However, they went to Scotland still able to win the trophy for beating the other three 'Home Union' teams. What is that trophy called?

Answer: The Triple Crown

The 'Home Union' consists of Ireland (both Northern Ireland and Eire, they compete as a single team in the Six Nations), Scotland, England, and Wales. The Triple Crown is also a very coveted trophy. It is not a crown however, but a silver plate.
2. Brian O'Driscoll was captain of Ireland against Scotland for a record-equalling 36th time. Which charismatic captain's record did he equal?

Answer: Keith Wood

All the wrong answers captained Ireland in their time and Mike Gibson played for an amazing 15 years (1964-79). But since Rugby has become a professional game, there are far more international games and far more chances to gain 'caps' playing for your country. Conversely, the game is faster and harder now and career-threatening injuries are also more likely.
3. Who scored the only try in the Scotland v Ireland match?

Answer: Ronan O'Gara - Ireland

A match where all the points were scored by just two players, Chris Paterson kicking six penalties for Scotland, and Ronan O'Gara contributing a try, four penalties and a conversion for Ireland.
4. What did Scotland's coach Frank Hadden describe Ireland as after the match?

Answer: The second best team in the world

Hadden described the game as a 'hugely missed opportunity against the second best team in the world' after Scotland had led by five points with only 12 minutes to go.
5. After 41 minutes of the Scotland v Ireland game, Hugo Southwell was substituted by a player making his debut for Scotland. What was interesting about this player?

Answer: He joined his brother on the field for Scotland

Rory Lamont ran out to meet his brother Sean on his debut, the first time that brothers had played together for Scotland since the Leslies in 2004. There have been many famous brother combinations in International rugby, including the Underwoods for England, and the Ellas for Australia.
6. There were four tries scored in the Italy against Wales games. All the following players scored points in the match. Which one scored one of the four tries?

Answer: Kaine Robertson - Italy

Robertson and Mauro Bergamasco scored tries for Italy, with Pez contributing the two conversions and three penalties. Shane Williams and Matthew Rees scored the tries for Wales which were converted by Hook and Jones, and Hook also scored with two penalties.
7. Italy won this match 23-20. Who was leading at half time?

Answer: Italy 13-7

Two penalties and a try by Italy, a try and a conversion by Wales.
8. No one was sent off during the Italy against Wales match.

Answer: True

Although the TV cameras appeared to pick up a punch by an Italian player that the Welsh expected the citing commissioner to pick up on. From the International Rugby Board's Regulations: '16.3.1 A Citing Commissioner shall be appointed. Citing Commissioners shall be entitled to cite a Player for foul play when a Player has not been ordered off the playing enclosure, notwithstanding that the foul play may have been detected by a referee and/or touch judge and have been the subject of action taken on the playing enclosure.

A Citing Commissioner's decision as to whether a Player should be cited shall be final.' The player was banned following the citing for four matches.
9. During the last minute of the match against Italy, having asked the referee how much time they had left, what did Welsh player James Hook do?

Answer: Kicked for touch

Wales having gone for a lineout, the referee consulted the Television Match Official, who told him there was no time for it to be taken, so the referee blew for the end of the match. The referee apologised after the match for the 'misunderstanding'.
10. Who was awarded Man of The Match in Wales against Italy?

Answer: Sergio Parisse - Italy

This was the third match in a row where Italy were awarded Man of the Match. Commentators were calling Parisse man of the Championship.
11. Who was England's captain for the game against France, controversially selected at the age of 35, thirteen years after winning his first cap?

Answer: Mike Catt

The oldest captain at Twickenham for more than 75 years. All the other players are former captains, but only Corry was also on the field, having surrendered the captaincy to Phil Vickery, who was injured for this match.
12. With Jonny Wilkinson still injured, two new players made their debut at stand off, Toby Flood and, after he was injured, Shane Geraghty. What did they contribute to the score?

Answer: One try, two conversions and four penalties

Between them, the two rookies scored twenty one of England's twenty six points. Mike Tindall was the other England player to score a try after Geraghty's electrifying sixty yard run had put him within yards of the post.
13. Despite the performance, neither of the two stand offs won the Man of the Match award. This went to another of the new generation. Who?

Answer: Tom Rees - England

Both Rees at openside flanker and Strettle on the right wing had towering performances for England. Skrela and Yachvili scored all France's points with three penalties apiece.
14. For the first time in this Championship, on the TV coverage could be heard England's unofficial Rugby 'anthem' from the Twickenham terraces - what is this called?

Answer: 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot'

'Ere we Go' is more associated with Football (Soccer). Quite how an African-American spiritual, with no reference to sport, became England's anthem is a mystery, as is Ireland's 'Fields of Athenry', which is about the Potato Famine, again with no reference to sport. Wales 'Hymns and Arias' was written specifically about Rugby by Wales' singer/comedian Max Boyce.
15. Who was leading the Championship going into the last weekend?

Answer: France

France had six points from three victories, as did Ireland and England but France had a points difference (the difference between points scored for and against) of 42 as opposed to Irelend's 38 and England's 13.
