Italy was admitted to the tournament in 2000 joining the existing five nations, Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales and France.

England won the first 6 Nations in 2000 winning their first 4 matches but lost their 5th match to Scotland (which was their only win). France were runner-sup with three wins in their five matches.

A 'Grand Slam' occurs when a team wins the Six Nations by beating all of the other five competitors in that year. The first Grand Slam in the Six Nations tournament was achieved by France in 2002.
