Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the first match to kick off the third weekend of the 2007 Six Nation's Championship?

Answer: Scotland v Italy

Unusually that weekend, all three matches were played on the Saturday, with the last (France v Wales) not finishing until past 9.30 GMT. Six and a half hours of coverage was heaven. Scotland had taken to announcing the kickoff with a gun.
2. If you had been expecting a friend to watch Scotland against Italy, and they had arrived ten minutes late, what would the score have been when they sat down?

Answer: Scotland 0 Italy 21

For the record, the tries came on 18 seconds, 3 minutes and 42 seconds, and 5 minutes and 50 seconds. The scorers were Maura Bergamasco, Andrea Scanavacca, and Kaine Robertson.
3. Italy's 34-17 victory over Scotland in 2007 was their first ever win in the Six Nation's Championship.

Answer: False

It was their first ever away win. Italy in fact won their first ever match in the Six Nations, back in 2000. They defeated Scotland in Rome.
4. What was not one of the words Scotland's Sean Lamont was quoted as saying about Scotland's performance against Italy?

Answer: Promising

This result was widely regarded as one of the shocks of the Championship.
5. Having been awarded Man Of The Match in Italy's second match (despite being on the losing side), Alessandro Troncon, Italy's captain, did what against Scotland?

Answer: Scored a try and was awarded Man Of The Match

Man Of The Match is awarded with a bottle of champagne, and Troncon thoroughly deserved it. He also scored a magnificent try.
6. Ireland against England in Croke Park was the second match of the third weekend. Ireland triumphed 43-13. Who was the Irish coach 10 years previously when Ireland lost by 40 points to England?

Answer: Brian Ashton - England coach 2007

International Rugby Union coaches do move around, and Brian Ashton was in charge of Ireland when they lost heavily to England, and in charge of England when they lost heavily to Ireland. Once again, though, no excuses from him. "We were beaten all over the field. We were stuffed. It's as simple as that."
7. Who was the only player to be sent off in the match between Ireland and England?

Answer: Danny Grewcock - England

Danny Grewcock was sin-binned. Ireland took full advantage of his absence by scoring two tries.
8. Who scored the first points in the Ireland v England match?

Answer: Jonny Wilkinson - penalty

Jonny Wilkinson banged over a penalty to put England 3 up in the first minute, the last time they were ahead in the game.
9. Who became the first Irishman to score over 700 points in Test Rugby during the match against England?

Answer: Ronan O'Gara

Ronan O'Gara later became Ireland's leading points scorer. Although not a score of his own, a sublime touch of O'Gara's in this match was a perfectly-judged crossfield kick which Shane Horgan simply had to catch and fall over the line for a try. Of the wrong answers, Brian O'Driscoll was Ireland's charismatic captain and Willie John and Tony Ward were iconic players from years gone by.
10. Following England's defeat by Ireland, some commentators in the media, amongst them England's former captain Will Carling, were calling for Rugby League convert Andy Farrell to be dropped. What was a possible reason the RFU was reluctant to do so?

Answer: The amount they paid for him

Andy Farrell made the switch from Rugby League as arguably the world's best RL player. He was only the second British player to win the Golden Boot (Ellery Hanley having been the first in 1989).
11. Which Welsh player missed the 2007 Six Nations match against France, after suffering a broken jaw against Scotland in the previous match?

Answer: Kevin Morgan

X-rays revealed a break to Morgan's jaw, leading him to miss the match. Although Wales' former coach, Mike Ruddock called for both Charvis and Henson to be recalled to the side, it was possible that Henson needed knee surgery. Barry John was undoubtedly one of Wales' finest ever Rugby players, but at age 62 in 2007, was unlikely to be picked.
12. After 15 minutes, what was the score in the France v Wales match, won by France 32-21?

Answer: France 3 Wales 14

Tries by Alix Popham and James Hook gave Wales an early lead before France's fight back. Wales actually scored three tries to France's two in this game. To score three tries against France in the Stade de France was a fine achievement.
13. David Skrela of France had eight kicks at goal in their match against Wales. How many did he score?

Answer: Seven

For a total of 19 points (five penalties at 3 points each and two conversions at two points each). Rugby scoring - 5 points for a try, three for a penalty or a drop goal, and two points for a 'conversion' after a try.
14. What nationality was the referee for the 2007 Six Nations match between France and Wales?

Answer: English

Match officials are always neutral. Although England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland make up the United Kingdom, the inter-country rivalry means that an Englishman is considered neutral by both teams.
15. At the end of the third weekend, France led the table with an unbeaten record. Who were the only two teams able to stop them, claiming a Grand Slam at this point in the Chamionship?

Answer: England and Scotland

Having beaten Wales, Ireland and Italy, only England and Scotland still had a chance.
