Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Reggie Jackson won or shared an American League season home run title four times. He never hit more than 41 to do it. Reggie's career high was 47 in 1973, but still finished third behind runner-up Frank Howard of the Senators with his 48, and which Minnesota Twin who hit 49?

Answer: Harmon Killebrew

The others were all career National League players. Killebrew won six titles of his own, and reached his career high of 49 twice. He was the 1969 AL MVP, winning it over Boog Powell of the Orioles. Powell's teammate Frank Robinson finished third.
2. Rod Carew won a batting title in seven of nine seasons. In 1971, Tony Oliva took the title while Carew finished fifth. In 1976, Rod lost the batting title by .002 to which Kansas City Royal?

Answer: George Brett

The others did not begin their careers until the 1980s, and none of them ever played for the Royals. Brett batted .333 and watched his teammate, Hal McRae, finish as the runner-up with .332. Carew's batting crowns came from 1969-1978. He was traded to the Angels prior to the 1979 season, and never won another crown again.
3. St. Louis Cardinal Bob Gibson had a great season in 1968. He won the NL MVP and the Cy Young awards. He led the league in strikeouts and ERA, but missed winning the Triple Crown by finishing runner-up with the most wins. Which Giant took that leg of the Triple Crown away from Gibson with 26 wins of his own in 1968?

Answer: Juan Marichal

The others were all Giants, but never won 20 games in a season. Marichal went 26-9 in 1968, the second time that he led the league in wins. Juan finished fifth in the MVP voting, and was not in the top ten for the Cy Young award in 1968.
4. This Cleveland Indian batted .408 in a season, but was still runner-up to the batting title. Who was this?

Answer: Joe Jackson

The others never batted .400 in a season. 1911 was the first of three times that Ty Cobb of the Tigers batted over .400 in his career. Jackson was in his first full season with the Indians in 1911, after being traded by the Athletics in limited duty. Joe was runner-up for a batting title three times, and lost all them to Cobb. Jackson never won a battting crown.
5. In 1998, I hit 66 home runs but was still the runner-up to lead the league. I lost the crown to Mark McGwire's 70. Who am I?

Answer: Sammy Sosa

Sosa of the Cubs hit 66 in 1998. Sammy would go on to hit 60+ two more times in the next three seasons. Sosa would have his revenge against McGwire, as Sammy won the NL MVP in 1998, with McGwire being the runner-up.
6. I batted for the Triple Crown in 1967, and in that World Series, I batted .400, went 10 for 25 with two doubles, five RBIs, and hit three home runs. Had my team won, I would clearly have been the series MVP instead of Cardinal Bob Gibson. Who am I?

Answer: Carl Yastrzemski

The others were all St. Louis Cardinals. Yaz was the last player in Major League baseball to bat for the Triple Crown in the 20th century. Carl also won the AL MVP in the season. He retired with 452 home runs, and was a Hall of Fame inductee in 1989.
7. 1927 saw Yankee Babe Ruth hit a massive 60 home runs in the season, but did not go home with the season MVP. Who won the MVP instead?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

The others did not begin their careers until the 1930s. Gehrig batted .373 to Ruth's .356, and out-hit the Babe 218-192. Gehrig blasted 47 home runs in the season. Ruth hit two home runs in that World Series against the Pirates, and was the only player to hit any.
8. The great Nolan Ryan, believe it or not, never won a season MVP or Cy Young award in his career. The closest that he came to a MVP was 14th place in 1974. For the Cy Young award, Nolan was runner-up once in his career. Who took Ryan's only shot at the Cy Young away?

Answer: Jim Palmer

Baltimore's Palmer was in his fourth consecutive 20-win season in 1973. It was the first of three Cy Young awards that Palmer would win. Palmer himself was a Cy Young runner-up twice. In 1977, he lost to Sparky Lyle of the Yankees, then again in 1982 to Pete Vuckovich of the Brewers. Jim retired with 2212 career strikeouts, while Ryan stood at the top of the heap with 5714.
9. From 2001-2004, Barry Bonds won four consecutive National League MVP awards. He would have won five consecutive, but was runner-up to which player?

Answer: Jeff Kent

It was Giant teammate and second baseman Jeff Kent in 2000 who had 22 first place votes to Bonds' six, although Kent hit 33 home runs compared to Barry's 49. Bonds had his limelights, winning a total of seven MVPs, two with the Pirates and five with San Francisco.
10. Gaylord Perry was the first pitcher to win a Cy Young award in each league. He won his first in 1972 with the Indians, then again in 1978 with the Padres. He had a chance to win a three Cy Young's, but was runner-up to which pitcher?

Answer: Bob Gibson

The others were all Cy Young winners. It was Bob Gibson of the Cardinals who put Gaylord's first Cy Young award on hold in 1970. It was Bob's second Cy Young of his career. Gibson was inducted into the hall in 1981, then Perry in 1991.
